I seemed to have fallen into an endless dark swamp, slumbering for an unknown time.
As my consciousness flickered, there was always a clamor in my ears, with the deep and thick voice of men, the soft murmur of women, and the lively noise of children at play, occasionally mixed with the faint sobbing of women.
Those sounds intertwine, enveloping me tightly like an invisible net. The noise made my head throb.
No matter how hard I struggled, I couldn't break free from the bind. My eyelids were so heavy as if they were pressed by a thousand pounds of a boulder that I couldn't open them.
My mind was blank as if I'd forgotten many crucial things. I desperately tried to recall them. But all I could grasp were vague fragments.
Even though my eyes remained closed, I could vividly sense countless pairs of eyes staring intently at me. Their gazes pierced through me, making me feel incredibly uneasy.
The noise abruptly stopped after an indeterminate amount of time.
Just then, a familiar voice reaches my ears. "Laurel, why aren't you awake yet?"
It was Angela's voice!
My heart skipped a beat, and a surge of longing washed over me. I gathered all my strength, trying to open my eyes and respond to her call.
However, my body felt like it had been hit by a petrification curse, refusing to obey my commands. In the end, my efforts were futile.
Then, the sounds around me gradually faded away. I fell into that chaotic darkness again.
Just as my thoughts were racing, a cold sneer broke the silence.
"Laurel Parks, I didn't expect you to be alive after such serious injuries."
A lot of things happened suddenly. Angela was gone, and so was my mother.
I was injured at the police station and almost died.
No one expected Wayne to hide a knife when the police took him away.
As I lay on the ground and closed my eyes, I saw the strange smile on Arianna's lips.
I understood instantly. It was a carefully planned murder plot.
Wayne's target was never Arianna but me from his first step into the police station.
I thought, 'Could it be because of Wilhelm's case?
I obstructed their interests, so they want to kill me to silence me?
'But Wayne wanted to kill me. There are many ways to do it, so why choose the police station?
'There must be a deeper purpose, not just to silence me, but most likely to warn someone not to talk.
'And there is another corrupt cop who has been lurking around Marvin in the police station besides Arianna. The person not only knows Marvin's whereabouts well but also knows the progress of his investigation.
Besides the people inside the police station, there couldn't be anyone else.
'But I didn't see Brady at the police station that day.'
Thinking of that, I abruptly opened my eyes and sat up from the bed.
Leah was startled, and a flicker of panic flashed across her eyes.
I didn't bother to pay attention to her and sat up, enduring the discomfort in my body.
A sharp pain in my neck made me gasp.
"Laurel, are you trying to scare me on purpose?" Leah's eyes widened, and she glared at me with malice. Her face was full of anger as if she wanted to skin me alive.
I glanced at her indifferently and said hoarsely, "What have you done?"
Leah's heart skipped a beat at my question, but she quickly regained her arrogance. She stepped forward with a malice look and said menacingly, "You are so disrespectful. I need to teach you some rules of the Herrera family."
Then she raised her hand and slapped me in the face.
"Slap!" The sound of the blow echoed through the room. My cheek stung, and I could feel it turning red.
Leah paused, seemingly surprised I hadn't dodged. Then, a smug grin spread across her face, showing a victorious posture.
However, the ward door swung open a second later.
Alfie entered. His brow furrowed in concern when he saw my swollen cheek.
He turned his sharp gaze on Leah. "Did you hit her?" he asked, his voice low and dangerous.
Leah met his gaze without fear, her arrogance unwavering.
"Yes, I did," she said dismissively. "I'm teaching her the rules of the Herrera family. Mr. Watts, this is a family matter. It's none of your business."
Alfie sneered and looked at Leah calmly. Before he could speak, a cold voice suddenly sounded, "Mr. Watts indeed has no right to interfere in the Herrera family's affairs, but what about me?"
I followed the sound and saw Alex being wheeled by Lawrence.
He wore a white sweater, which made his handsome face even more charming. However, his whole body exuded a fierce aura that made people shudder.
Leah panicked when she saw Alex but quickly calmed down. She glanced at Alex and said lightly, "She was the one who was rude to me first. Alex, I'm just trying to teach your wife the rules of the Herrera family.
She has always been disrespectful to her elders. Now she is still unruly and willful even lying in bed. How will she educate her children in the future?"
"Children?" I slowly raised my head, looked at Leah, and said casually, "Didn't you always want Alex and me to get divorced? Weren't you all celebrating when I lost my child?"
Leah was stunned. A look of horror and panic flashed across her eyes. Her lips trembled slightly as if she wanted to say something but couldn't.
At that moment, I finally confirmed one thing. The people who wanted to kill my unborn child were not only Kailyn but also Summer and Leah.
My heart ached. Alex had known the answer all along, which was why he avoided talking about the loss of the child. Maybe the child didn't matter in his eyes.
"You... you are talking nonsense." Leah forced herself to calm down and retorted loudly.
"Then, let's bring Edwin here and have a confrontation, shall we?" I crooked my lips into a smile at Leah, but there was a chill in it.
Leah's face turned awful. She gritted her teeth and spat, "Don't think you can do whatever you want just because Alex has your back."
Alex looked at Leah coldly with no hint of warmth in his eyes. "Leah," he said slowly, "it seems you have less and less regard for me as your brother."
Leah trembled slightly at his words. She lowered her head, not daring to meet his eyes. "Alex," she mumbled, "I... I did it for your good."
