"For my good?" Alex scoffed, his laugh full of scorn and disdain. The corner of his mouth lifted in a cold smirk, and his gaze was sharp as a knife as he stared at Leah. "You dare say what you did to Laurel was for my good?"
Leah's face turned pale, her lips trembling. She tried to speak, but Alex cut her off with a raised hand.
"Enough, Leah!" His voice rose sharply with unquestionable authority. His brows furrowed, and his eyes blazed with fury. "I won't pursue the matter further, but if it happens again, don't blame me for not considering our sibling affection!"
Leah stiffened. She bit her lip, the color draining from it. Her eyes flashed with a hint of reluctance and anger. However, when they met Alex's cold gaze, they quickly dimmed.
In the end, she didn't say anything more. She glared at me with such venom that she looked ready to skin me alive, then turned and left the ward.
Silence fell over the ward, heavy and suffocating.
I sat quietly in the hospital bed, looking at Alex. My heart filled with mixed emotions.
Sunlight streamed through the window, bathing him in its warm glow and outlining his handsome features, but I couldn't decipher his thoughts.
'I don't know what Alex feels for me. Does he truly care, or is he simply here to maintain his public image as a loving husband?' I thought.
Alex turned his head, his dark eyes gazing intently at my swollen face. A flicker of distress crossed his features. For a moment, I glimpsed the tenderness hidden within him.
He slowly reached out and softly asked, "Does it hurt?"
I froze, caught off guard by Alex's concern. A wave of complex emotions washed over me.
I instinctively shook my head and whispered, "No, it doesn't."
However, how could my face not hurt?
The truth was, the pain in my heart far outweighed my physical pain.
The agony of betrayal and manipulation felt like thorns piercing my soul. Sometimes it took a long time, even a lifetime to recover.
Alex's hand gently rested on my face, the warmth of her palm bringing a touch of heat to my icy heart.
His eyes were filled with tenderness, almost intoxicating me.
"I won't let her bully you anymore," said Alex.
I looked at Alex, and a warm current surged in my heart. I nodded silently. "There's something I want to ask you. Don't lie to me."
Alex looked at me with a hint of confusion in his eyes. He paused and said, "What's up?
I took a deep breath, trying to keep my voice steady. "Did you know all along that Leah and the others wanted to kill our child?"
A flicker of pain flashed across Alex's eyes, and my heart clenched.
He lowered his head, his thick eyelashes casting a shadow beneath them. "Yes, I knew."
I felt a sudden stabbing pain as if I had been pierced by a sharp knife.
I looked at Alex and said tremblingly, "Then why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you seek justice for our child?"
Alex looked up at me, and his eyes filled with guilt.
His lips trembled slightly as if he were trying to find the right words. "Laurel, it's not that I don't want to tell you. I don't want to see you get hurt again."
"So that's it?" I asked, my voice full of resentment. I already knew his answer but couldn't help but ask.
Alex's expression changed slightly, and a trace of hesitation flashed in his eyes. He didn't answer my question directly but gave me a meaningful look and added, "You rest well and don't overthink things."
I nodded obediently. My gaze was gentle as I looked at Alex, the handsome man, in the wheelchair. But my clenched fingers trembled slightly, betraying my inner anxiety and anger.
The temperature indoors was about 80℉, yet I felt as if I was in an ice cellar.
On the day I married Alex and received our marriage certificate, I told myself I would never be ruled by love again. No matter how perfect he seemed, it was all fake.
I was heartbroken at that time. If I hadn't been so eager to get away from Austin and to silence my mother's nagging about marriage, I never would have imagined myself getting married just for the sake of it.
And I never imagined the man I married would be the unattainable president of the Herrera Group.
After Alex left the ward, I secretly breathed a sigh of relief, my tense expression seeming to relax in an instant.
I slowly got out of bed. My steps were a little unsteady, and I walked toward the bathroom.
The ward was a one-bedroom, one-living room layout. Although it was not large, it had everything one needed.
The surroundings were quiet, and I could only hear my heartbeat.
I closed my eyes, and my heartbeat grew louder as if my ears were pressed against my heart.
I frowned slightly and opened my eyes again. My body couldn't stop trembling.
"Laurel!" Sophina's voice was anxious.
The moment she saw me come out, she hurried to my side, her eyes sparkling with tears. She said with a sob, "Laurel, you're awake."
I glanced at her, raised my hand, and pinched her smooth chubby cheek, trying to squeeze out a smile. "You want me to keep sleeping?"
Sophina shook her head and sobbed, saying, "Laurel, you were bleeding so badly then. I thought you were going to die."
I saw her pitiful appearance and a surge of pity arose in my heart. "Don't worry. The King of Hell thinks I'm a troublemaker, so he can only send me back."
Then the rapid footsteps were heard outside the door.
Alfie pushed the door open and walked with a grave face.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Brady committed suicide to escape punishment," said Alfie.
My heart sank. "How could it happen? Why would he suddenly commit suicide?" I asked, unable to believe it.
Alfie sighed. "He admitted that he was a corrupt cop, bribing Penny to stop Marvin from investigating the case because he was afraid Marvin would find evidence against him."
I was silent momentarily. Then I looked up at Alfie and asked softly, "Is Brady dead?"
"No. He jumped from the 10th floor and is currently in a coma," said Alfie, letting out a long sigh.
"No. Brady is not a corrupt cop," I pondered and said with a decisive tone. "The real dirty cop is someone else."
