Few people attended Brady's funeral.
I followed behind Marvin. My eyes wandered through the crowd, finally landing on Josephine Backer in front of the mourning hall.
She was thin and frail as if a gust of wind could knock her over. Her entire being exuded a deep exhaustion.
The skinny little boy beside Josephine hid behind her, his eyes red and swollen. He occasionally glanced at Brady in the coffin.
His eyes were full of fear and helplessness, much like Javier's when he was a lonely and scared child, which made my heart clench.
Josephine's heart-wrenching grief over Brady's death stood in stark contrast to her previous disdain for him, making one wonder if Josephine, now weeping so bitterly, truly cared for her deceased husband.
As if sensing my gaze, Josephine slowly turned her head, our eyes meeting in the air.
Her eyes were hollow and lost, filled with deep sorrow. I was even a little dazed, wondering if my suspicions were too hasty.
As the funeral concluded, the crowd gradually dispersed.
Marvin led me to Josephine. His expression was solemn, and his hands clasped before him. He cleared his throat softly and said, "Mrs. Martin, I'm sorry for your loss. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything."
"Thank you," Josephine replied politely. She looked up at Alfie, her eyes vacant and her voice hoarse.
"What are your plans for the future, Mrs. Martin?" Alfie asked abruptly from the side.
Josephine was stunned. She then replied slowly, "I will do my best to cure my child... After all these years with Brady, our love had faded because of our child.
From the second year of our marriage, I started to despise him, and my words filled with contempt. I never thought now that he's gone, I would realize how wrong I was..."
Then her eyes reddened again, tears welling up.
Alfie frowned slightly, a hint of suspicion flashing across his eyes. He nodded gently and consolingly said, "Don't blame yourself too much. Just take good care of your child."
Josephine nodded slightly and hugged the child in her arms. The child shrank back in her arms, like a frightened deer.
Marvin and I walked toward the car. I kept thinking about Josephine's behavior along the way.
Suddenly, I heard the sound of several people talking in the distance.
"I have heard that Josephine plans to leave Nifelheim City with her son a week later."
"Yes. Now that Brady is gone, she probably has nothing to worry about." I was shocked to hear that. The timing of Josephine's departure was too coincidental.
After we got in the car, Marvin started the engine, and the car slowly drove out.
He glanced at me in the rearview mirror and saw me frowning with a look of deep concern. He asked, "What's wrong? You've been acting strange since you came out of the funeral."
I took a deep breath and turned to look at him. I hesitated but decided to tell him my suspicions, "Marvin, I don't think things are that simple.
"Don't you think Josephine is strange? She used to despise Brady, but now she is heartbroken. Moreover, she suddenly wants to leave Nifelheim City. I suspect she took a bribe and framed Brady as a corrupt cop."
Marvin's hand trembled, and the steering wheel veered slightly. He quickly regained control of the car. He was shocked. His eyes widened, and his mouth opened slightly.
He said in disbelief, "So, you think Josephine took a bribe to frame Brady as a corrupt cop? How is this possible? What's the evidence? Why would Josephine do that?"
A hint of doubt was in his tone, and his brow furrowed tightly.
I pursed my lips, my hands clenching involuntarily. "Although I don't have any solid proof now, all signs point to something being off about this. Brady's accident happened soon after he was investigated. The income in his bank card may have been deliberately framed.
"And Josephine's drastic change in attitude, along with her sudden departure from Nifelheim City, these coincidences together make it hard not to be suspicious. Maybe she was being used for the money to pay for her child's treatment."
Marvin was silent. His fingers tapped rhythmically on the steering wheel, and his expression gradually turned serious.
He narrowed his eyes slightly, lost in thought. After a long while, he slowly said, "Without evidence, everything is just speculation. Besides, if someone is manipulating things behind the scenes, the person must be cautious and will not easily leave any evidence."
I said, "We can start with Josephine's bank account and check if she has received any large unidentified payments recently. Also, Brady must have been in contact with someone before the accident. We can start with the people around him, maybe we can find some clues."
Marvin nodded with a hint of determination in his eyes. "Okay, since you suspect something is wrong, let's get to the bottom of it. We can't let Brady be wrongly accused of being a corrupt cop."
Marvin and I started running around over the next few days.
We found a friend who worked at the bank to help us check Josephine's bank statements.
Sure enough, we found she received a huge transfer before and after Brady's accident. The transfer source was shown to be an anonymous account, which further deepened our suspicion.
Then, we started to visit Brady's colleagues and friends.
During the visit, a colleague of Brady provided an important clue.
He said he saw a mysterious person come to Brady a few days before Brady's accident. The two talked for a long time in the corner outside the police station. Brady's face looked awful and anxious.
Marvin and I were excited to learn about that, feeling we were one step closer to the truth.
We started to dig deep into the clue and finally found the mysterious figure through the surveillance video of the police station nearby.
The mysterious man was wearing a hat and a mask, and his face could not be seen clearly. However, judging from his body shape and walking posture, he seemed to visit the police station frequently.
Alfie suddenly found us as we were about to investigate the mysterious person's identity more.
His face was awful, and his eyes were full of anger and helplessness.
"I just got the news someone is destroying evidence secretly, and some of the clues we had before have been destroyed." He punched the table hard. "And Josephine will take Henry away from Nifelheim City next Wednesday."
My heart sank. It seemed our investigation had alarmed the black hand behind it.
"So what should we do now?" I looked at Alfie and Marvin, anxiety in my eyes.
Once Josephine left, we would lose our most important witness.
Marvin frowned and said in a deep voice, "Then we'll lay out the bait and see if there are any takers."
