"Miss Parks, are you here for a repair?" The young nurse gently smiled when she saw me enter the cosmetology department.
I nodded slightly, my fingers subconsciously touching the prominent scar on my neck.
That knife wound almost killed me. Although it wasn't too deep, it still left an ugly mark on my neck.
I stayed in the cosmetology department for almost half an hour. After finishing the repair, I turned around and walked out, heading straight for the elevator.
As soon as I stepped into the elevator, I subconsciously looked up and saw Josephine, dressed in a white coat, standing alone in the corner of the elevator quietly.
She lowered her head and stared intently at the document in her hand, seemingly failing to recognize me. Her expression was as calm as the bottomless water, without a ripple.
The elevator doors closed slowly. In the silence, the phone in my bag suddenly rang, the crisp ringtone particularly jarring in the small space.
I quickly took out my phone and pretended to have a poor signal in the elevator, deliberately increasing my volume and loudly saying, "Mr. Watts, what's the matter?"
Standing beside me, Josephine remained cold and distant, not even bothering to lift her eyelids. It was as if my phone call had nothing to do with her.
She stood quietly and upright, with her hands crossed in front of her. She gripped the file tightly, and her knuckles were slightly white from the force.
"I'm at the hospital. What happened?" I frowned slightly, and my face revealed a confused expression. I continued to speak on the phone, "The damaged phone can be repaired, but don't you think it's odd? Why did Brady send Marvin a phone? Are you sure the phone belonged to Brady?"
Just as I said my words, the elevator doors opened.
I strode out while talking on the phone. My face was full of confusion, but my eyes stole sideways glances at Josephine, who was standing beside me and had come out with me.
Her face was still expressionless. She walked with a steady step and an air of indifference as if she had not cared about what I had just said.
Even after I got into the car, I kept my eyes fixed on the hospital entrance.
It wasn't long before I saw Josephine rushing out of the hospital.
"Follow her car," I spoke in a deep voice, raising my hand to rub my forehead. My voice tinged with fatigue and tension.
The game had been set for a long time. If Josephine ignored what I just said, all our efforts would be in vain, and everything would have to start all over again.
The car started slowly and followed Josephine's car.
My heart became more nervous as the car drove, and I dared not take my eyes off Josephine's car.
I couldn't help but feel anxious when I saw Josephine drive downstairs to her apartment building where she lived.
"Why did Josephine go home?" I turned my head in confusion and looked at Marvin, sitting in the car beside me.
My eyes were full of anxiety and puzzlement.
Marvin calmly said, "Don't worry. We have to leave some time for her to confirm Brady's mobile phone is in our hands."
His voice was calm and steady as if everything was under his control.
He leaned back in his seat. His eyes narrowed slightly, and his gaze was firmly in the direction where Gu Bei had parked.
"Are you sure Brady has two phones?" I asked suspiciously, furrowing.
Marvin explained, "Brady did have two phones, but the other one was an old one that he kept for emergencies."
He sat up slightly, and his arms crossed over his chest. He continued, "Brady had been cautious, which was why he had two phones. Actually, the other phone he kept for emergencies was for contacting his son. It was never turned off."
"Do you think Josephine will believe what I just said?" I asked worriedly, my eyes betraying a trace of unease.
Marvin was silent as if considering how to answer the question.
After a while, he continued, "Don't worry. Josephine will believe it. She lived with Brady for so long and must have seen his second phone. If Brady took the fall for someone else, Josephine would surely have her doubts."
Then Marvin sneered and muttered, "If Josephine knew Brady, she would know that even if Brady was wronged, as long as he could give them a safe life in the future, he would die a worthy death."
Perhaps it was with the feeling in mind that Brady did not expose the person who threatened him before he died.
Thinking of that, I couldn't help but feel a surge of emotions. I was more determined than ever to uncover the truth.
We waited downstairs for less than fifteen minutes but didn't see Josephine.
I couldn't sit still, constantly shifting in my seat and glancing toward the entrance of the residential compound.
Marvin, however, showed no signs of anxiety. He calmly took out his phone, dialed Josephine's number, and asked for Brady's phone password.
The call quickly connected. Marvin's voice was filled with urgency. "Josephine, do you know Brady's phone password? He sent me a package with a phone inside.
"The phone is damaged but can be repaired, and the data inside can be recovered. It's just that I need the password to turn on his phone. Josephine, do you happen to know Brady's phone password?"
On the phone, Josephine sounded a little confused as she asked, "Brady's phone password?"
"Yes, Brady's phone password," Marvin emphasized again, his eyes revealing a trace of eagerness.
"His phone password should be his birthday. As for others, I don't know." Josephine's voice remained calm, with no emotional fluctuations.
However, the calmer she was, the more suspicious it seemed.
As Brady's wife, wasn't she curious about what was installed on the phone Brady sent to Marvin?
Her uncharacteristic calmness made it seem as if they were discussing something utterly insignificant.
"Josephine, I remember Brady saying he had a bad memory and would write the password down in a diary." Marvin paused, coughed lightly, and added, "Josephine, are you home now? Maybe I could come over and look for Brady's notebook?"
Josephine was silent on the other end of the phone before replying, "Okay. I'm at the hospital. It might take me twenty minutes to get back." Her voice was calm and steady, without a trace of panic.
"Okay. I'll be there in twenty minutes." Then Marvin hung up the phone.
