"Josephine has gone home. Why would she lie?" I asked, staring at Marvin with a confused expression. My heart churned with questions, and my eyes filled with bewilderment and incomprehension.
Marvin sighed softly as if he had seen through everything. He slowly replied, "Do you think she will tell me the real password?"
"So she's planning to find the notebook herself first?"
I was slightly taken aback, countless thoughts flashing through my mind.
'Indeed, if Josephine has a guilty conscience and hides an unspeakable secret, how could she possibly hand over the real password easily?' I thought.
Time passed silently in the long wait. Finally, twenty minutes had passed.
Marvin glanced at his watch, his eyes revealing a hint of determination. "Let's go," he said.
Then he decisively opened the car door and stepped out.
Not daring to delay, I hurried after him, my heart pounding uncontrollably.
We arrived at Josephine's door, and Marvin reached out to ring the doorbell.
The crisp ringing echoed through the silent hallway, each chime grating on my nerves.
After a while, the door slowly opened. Josephine stood at the door. Her face was still calm and expressionless as if everything was under her control.
"Josephine, I'm here to pick up Brady's notebook," Marvin said with a kind smile and a hint of warmth in his tone.
"Come in please," Josephine said softly, stepping aside to let us in.
The interior was simply but warmly furnished, yet the atmosphere was so oppressive that it was suffocating.
I looked around, trying to find some clues from the surroundings.
Instead of taking out Brady's notebook as we expected, Josephine seemed to have hidden it in advance. A flicker of panic flashed through her eyes.
"Did you not find the notebook with Brady's passwords, Josephine?" Marvin's voice was still gentle, but his eyes revealed a hint of scrutiny.
Josephine's eyes darted around. After a moment of hesitation, she said, "Brady's things might have been burned when he was buried, so I didn't find that notebook you mentioned."
Her voice was steady, but I could sense something was wrong from her slightly trembling hands and unnatural expression.
Instead of leaving in a hurry, Marvin led me to sit on a sofa on the side.
His movements were calm and composed. "Josephine, we unlocked the phone on the way here, so it doesn't matter whether you have a password or not." Marvin's tone suddenly became serious. His eyes fixed on Josephine, trying to catch every subtle change in her expression.
Josephine's body stiffened slightly, and a look of panic flashed across her eyes, but she quickly regained her composure.
However, her momentary change did not escape Marvin's eyes.
Marvin immediately changed the subject and asked, "Josephine, I heard you're planning to take Henry to receive treatment abroad?"
A wary look flashed across Josephine's eyes as if she had sensed something in Marvin's words. A look of panic appeared on her face.
"Mr. Adams, what exactly are you doing here today?" Josephine asked in a deep voice, with a hint of displeasure and resistance in her tone.
Marvin knew it was time to lay his cards on the table.
He took a deep breath and looked at Josephine with determined eyes. He asked directly, "Josephine, why did you lie to me? Why did you frame Brady as a corrupt cop? The phone video showed him being threatened, but I never imagined you, his wife, would betray him."
Josephine's brows furrowed instantly, her eyes flashing with anger and pain.
Her eyes turned red in an instant. She stared at Marvin and said tremblingly, "If Brady were truly an upright police officer, our son wouldn't be seriously ill! He failed both our son and me!"
She was getting emotional, and her bloodshot eyes fixed on Marvin.
Then Josephine looked at Marvin with contempt and disdain. "If you, the police, have evidence, you can take me away now."
Her tone was full of provocation and unwillingness as if she was challenging Marvin and the entire police force.
Marvin was not affected by Josephine's emotions. He remained calm and rational.
"Josephine, Brady chose to bear all this to protect you and your son. He was threatened by a criminal gang and had to compromise for your safety. He would rather bear the stigma of being a corrupt cop than see you get hurt."
Josephine's body trembled slightly, and a flicker of hesitation flashed through her eyes.
Her lips trembled slightly as if she wanted to say something, but she hesitated.
"Josephine, don't you believe in Brady's love for you and Henry? Everything he did was for you. We get an opportunity to clear his name now and set the record straight. Can you bear to see him continue to bear the stigma?" Marvin continued, his eyes full of sincerity and expectation.
Josephine's tears welled up in her eyes, and Her heart seemed to be in a fierce struggle.
After a while, she finally couldn't help but cry, tears streaming down her face like a flood.
"I didn't want it to be like this either. I was just terrified. Those people threatened me they would hurt Henry if I didn't do what they said. I can't lose my son, I have no choice..." Josephine cried as she spoke, her voice full of despair and helplessness.
Marvin softly sighed and took a tissue from his pocket, handing it to Josephine.
"Josephine, we understand your difficulties. But we need your help now. Only when you tell us the truth can we bring those criminals to justice and truly protect you and Henry."
Josephine took the tissue, wiped her tears, and looked up at Marvin with a hint of hesitation and trust in her eyes.
"Can you protect me and Henry?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
"Don't worry, Josephine. We, the police, will do our best to protect your safety. As long as you cooperate with our investigation, we will give you and Henry a satisfactory answer," Marvin said firmly, his eyes showing great determination.
Josephine was silent, seeming to ponder Marvin's words.
After a while, she finally nodded and said, "Okay, I'll tell you the truth."
Josephine slowly recounted what had happened.
"Before Brady's accident, he suddenly gave me a large sum of money and told me to cure our son no matter what. I asked him where he got the money, but he refused to say a word. Later, he committed suicide out of guilt. I thought he was a corrupt cop until I received another transfer."
