Outside the interrogation room at the police station, the atmosphere was so oppressive it was hard to breathe.
I stood aside, appearing nonchalant, but my eyes were fixed on Josephine.
Josephine pulled a bank card from her coat pocket and handed it to Marvin. Her voice trembling slightly as she said, "Including the 150 thousand dollars Brady gave me, it adds up to 500 thousand dollars. I didn't touch a penny. It's all on this card."
I narrowed my eyes, carefully observing every nuance of her expression.
Her hand trembled slightly as she handed over the card, and her eyes darted subconsciously to the upper right.
She answered quickly at the beginning of Marvin's questioning, but her words were laced with perfunctoriness.
When she mentioned Brady, the corners of her mouth twitched low slightly, and there was no trace of longing in her eyes. Clearly, she didn't care about him.
However, when her son, Henry, was mentioned, her eyes softened instantly, and her hands unconsciously clenched. The subtle gesture revealed her deep concern for her son.
Marvin took the card and gave Josephine a meaningful look. "Why did you want to take Henry out of the country? Is it really to seek medical treatment for him?" Marvin asked in a deep voice.
Josephine sighed softly. She furrowed helplessly. "Yes. Of course, I also have my selfish reasons. I want to leave here and completely cast off the threat from the other party."
Her voice was tinged with exhaustion, her forehead beaded with sweat, and her eyes filled with fear.
Marvin nodded expressionlessly, his face betraying no emotion.
"I understand the situation and will explain it to the police station."
My heart skipped a beat, and a sense of unease washed over me.
If the incident were reported truthfully, the police station would never let Josephine leave so easily.
It was hard for them to leave Nifelheim City, let alone go abroad.
Marvin took Josephine back to the police station to explain the situation, while I got into my car alone.
As I was about to head back to Honeydew Estate, my phone suddenly rang.
It was a call from Maliyah. Her voice panicked and choked with sobs as she said, "Laurel, you must help Javier. He's in big trouble this time. If Mom finds out, she'll be furious."
My heart sank. "What happened?" I asked urgently.
Maliyah hesitated on the phone. I frowned and said with a heavier tone, "Where's Javier?"
"At... at Chapney Mansion," Maliyah quickly replied.
"Chapney Mansion?" I couldn't help but pause, surprise tinging my voice.
"Javier called Alex. He was worried about your health." Maliyah paused, then continued, "Actually, Javier is just scared of the family finding out about the trouble he caused."
"What on earth happened?" I asked in a deep voice, a bad feeling rising within me.
I thought, 'Javier would never seek Alex's help if it were a small matter. It looks like Javier has caused a lot of trouble this time.'
Maliyah stopped crying and said, "Javier seemed to have lost his mind. Because his thesis had been rejected, he went directly to the professor and got into a physical altercation. He was then taken away by the school counselor and told to call his family."
"I see. It's not a big deal." I said softly, trying to comfort her, but I felt uneasy.
Maliyah continued, "But the school wants to expel Javier, saying he openly provoked the professor."
It suddenly occurred to me I wanted Asher to help Javier leave Nifelheim City, and it would be best if Javier could temporarily leave the country. However, I never expected him to do it this way.
Wasn't that a little too much?
What bothered me more was that Javier didn't contact Maliyah immediately but Alex when he got into trouble.
"Don't worry too much. I'll go to the school and talk to the principal. The worst that can happen is that Javier'll be disciplined," I said hesitantly.
I knew in my heart that Alex had taken Javier back from school, which meant the school had respected Alex and would not expel Javier.
"But Javier agreed to drop out of school," Maliyah immediately explained. "I don't know what crazy idea Javier, the brat, has."
I suddenly realized what Maliyah was saying.
It seemed Javier must have misunderstood. Because he had offended Dominic, he thought someone was deliberately trying to make trouble for him.
"I'll pick up Javier in a while, and we'll talk about school when we get back."
Before I could finish my sentence, Maliyah interrupted me, "Laurel, let Alex come back with you. Don't tell me you're getting a divorce?"
Alex and I hadn't been in touch since I met him at the hospital. It had been nearly more than three days.
Sometimes I doubt if I was married.
I reached out to gently rub the wedding ring on my right ring finger. A self-deprecating smile appeared on the corner of my lips, and I whispered, "Don't worry. We won't get a divorce."
After a moment of silence on the other end of the phone, Maliyah's voice came again, "Really?"
I smiled in response and hung up the phone. Then I asked Liam to drive me to Chapney Mansion.
As the car slowly drove into Chapney Mansion, the security guard at the gate did not look down on me like the last time, but respectfully let me go in.
When our car drove to the entrance of Alex's villa area, I suddenly found the house next door, which had not been sold, was occupied.
"Mrs. Herrera, Alex has been waiting for you for a long time." Hector hurried out of the house to greet me when he saw me appear.
A woman walked out of the next room at that moment. She looked no more than twenty years old, with a hot body and bright eyes.
She walked up to me and blinked her long eyelashes curiously, asking, "Hector, is this Alex's wife?"
Hector nodded silently. He said with a benevolent smile. "This is Mrs. Herrera."
Looking at the young lady before me, I thought, "Here comes another one."
The way she looked at me and the tone of her voice made her a charming little seductress.
And I had to admit, she was good-looking. She and Alex were compatible when standing together.
I lifted the corners of my mouth slightly, revealing a faint smile. But in my heart, a pang of sourness welled up.
"Hello. I'm Alex's wife." I took the initiative to extend my hand and said amicably.
The girl also generously shook my hand and smiled, saying, "Hello. You are beautiful. My name is Regina Dawson. I just moved here."
Her smile was bright, but a hint of pride flashed in her eyes.
I smiled but said nothing.
I walked into the villa. Alex and Javier were in the living room.
Javier lowered his head guiltily when he saw me.
"Laurel... I..." Javier started to speak, but I cut him off.
"Not now. Come home with me." I looked at him, my tone brooking no argument.
Alex sat in his wheelchair, staring at me with a heavy gaze. "I'll go back with you."
