I was taken aback when Alex said he wanted to return to Honeydew Estate with us.
Even Regina wore a bewildered expression.
Alex's gaze was firm, and his tone carried an unquestionable certainty. "Let's go back together. Some things need to be made clear face-to-face."
Javier and I sat in the back seats of the car. When we got into the car, Javier couldn't wait to say, "Laurel, I didn't want to hit him!"
His hands fidgeted on his knees, and his eyes were full of panic and grievance. "I was just tearing up the thesis I wrote in the classroom. Who knew that professor would drag me to the office and accuse me of hitting him!"
The more he spoke, the more agitated he became. His voice unconsciously rose, and his face flushed, as if he wanted to shout out all the injustice in his heart.
Javier paused and sighed deeply when he noticed I was only listening quietly and not answering.
A self-deprecating smile touched his lips as he said, "Later, it occurred to me that it must have been the Reynolds family who bribed him. That professor never liked me. Now someone is paying him to get rid of me. It's a win-win for him."
He leaned back as if all his strength had been drained away, his eyes full of indignation and helplessness.
His words sent a jolt through me. The Reynolds family's influence in the city ran deep and could have done such a thing.
However, I couldn't help but wonder, 'How could any of these professors, who have been scrambling and tumbling in the academic circle for years with some integrity and means, be easily bribed?
'If that professor looks down on Javier, it would be as easy as pie for him to get Javier expelled. Why did he wait until today and make such a scene?'
"So, you agreed to drop out in a fit of anger?" I frowned, staring coldly at Javier, my eyes filled with disappointment and reproach. "You were impulsive. Did you even think about Bonnie? She worked hard to put you through school, hoping you would make something of yourself!"
Javier looked like a child caught in the act, his head drooping even lower. His hands clenched tightly around the hem of his clothes, knuckles turning white. After a long while, he mumbled, "Laurel, I... I lost my head back then. I didn't think that much."
His voice trembled a little, and his shoulders shook slightly, clearly stung by my words.
And Javier wilted instantly as if thinking of his deceased father.
I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down. In a gentler tone, I asked, "What exactly did you and Alex talk about? Why did he suddenly decide to go back with us?"
"Laurel, you and Alex haven't made up yet?" Javier abruptly lifted his head, his face filling with astonishment. His eyes were wide with confusion and incomprehension.
"Alex said he was worried about you and some misunderstandings need to be clarified face to face. No matter what happens, the family can't fall apart."
As Javier spoke, he cautiously observed my expression, afraid to touch one of my sensitive nerves.
My heart skipped a beat. Alex's words created ripples in my heart.
I couldn't help but chuckle inwardly when I think of all the little things between us.
The Herreras were all masters of acting. It was a shame they didn't pursue it as a profession.
The car drove slowly down the road, and the scenery outside the window flashed by like a slideshow.
The atmosphere in the car was oppressive. I stared out the window, lost in thought.
'What is Alex up to?' I thought.
When we returned to Honeydew Estate and stepped inside, the familiar scent enveloped me, yet it was tinged with a hint of awkward strangeness.
Alex returned to the room before us. He sat in his wheelchair, staring intently at me, then shifted to Javier.
"Javier, I've talked to the school. They can let you stay enrolled, but they'll send you abroad as an exchange student," said Alex.
Upon hearing that, Javier froze. He had an expression of shock, and it took him a while to react.
"Alex, are you kidding me? The school has a limited number of exchange student places each year, and the students who get to the places are not ordinary. How could such a good thing happen to me?"
"Well, don't you want to go?" Alex paused and sighed. "Indeed, it won't be easy for you to go abroad alone in an unfamiliar place, but if you can succeed in your postgraduate studies after you go abroad, your future will be limitless.
"And maybe the Reynolds family won't bother you anymore. It should be a good thing for you. After all, the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. You go back to your room and think about it."
Javier silently nodded and turned to go out.
After hearing the door next door open, I looked up and stared at Alex, sitting in his wheelchair.
"Did you pull some strings to send Javier away?" I asked suspiciously. I didn't know why I couldn't help but think about him when I didn't see him, but I was a little scared when I saw him.
Alex was wearing a gray sweater and a pair of dark sweatpants.
He seldom wore sportswear. I saw him in such ordinary clothes today, and I didn't expect him to look so stunning.
Even the sharp aura around him weakened by more than half, but he still exuded a noble and elegant aura.
His unique temperament was like a demon fallen from heaven.
"Don't you want him to leave?" Alex suddenly raised his head, and his bright eyes fixed on me.
I narrowed my eyes, suspicion rising in my heart. 'Could he have already seen through my desire to let Javier leave Nifelheim City?' I thought.
Thinking of that, I couldn't help but take a deep breath and replied calmly, "I'm reluctant to let him go, but as you said, the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Moreover, he's a man and will be independent sooner or later."
Alex stared at me with burning eyes, exuding an inexplicable sense of oppression. But the corners of his lips curled into a smile as if he had seen through everything.
"In that case, have Javier get ready as soon as possible." Alex paused, and his gaze softened as it fell on me. "Since we married, I've been ignoring your feelings, arrogantly assuming you would like what I liked. Not until now did I understand that cats like fish, and giving it money is useless."
I looked at Alex blankly, "What are you trying to say?"
Alex hesitated before saying, "If you want to leave me, I'll let you go."
I smiled. "Are you serious?"
Alex glanced at me with a complicated look, nodded, and remained silent.
I raised my eyebrows and said, "I don't want to leave you right now. Well, are you thinking of marrying someone else? Let me tell you, dream on!"
