Leah gritted her teeth and stared at me. Her eyes were filled with anger.
Her breathing was rapid and heavy with pent-up anger. After rushing to me, she didn't hesitate to raise her hand and slap me in the face.
I took a deep breath. Panic flashed in my eyes. I gripped Leah's hand hard.
Our hands were in a deadlock in the air. I blinked and my lips curled into a disdainful smile. "Leah, what are you doing? Am I wrong?"
My voice carried a hint of laziness, but there was a cold smile in my tone.
Leah immediately panicked, her face flushing red from her cheeks to the roots of her ears. Her tone was filled with shame and anger as she shouted, "Who said I can't give birth to a child? I'm nothing like you, who have to use a child to secure your position!"
I shook off her arm and stared at Leah's stomach meaningfully. My eyes were filled with questions. "Then why did you kill the child in my stomach?"
"I don't like you. An uncultured and shameless woman like you doesn't deserve to marry into the Herrera family!" Leah's voice was filled with disgust. Her eyes were also filled with disdain as if I was a dirty thing. She felt disgusted just by looking at me.
"An uncultured and shameless woman?" I glanced at the photos on the table. The image hurt my eyes. I stared at Leah with a fake smile. "I wouldn't dare!"
"Laurel Parks, do you think your husband can still protect you in the future?" Leah glared at me with a wry smile.
My heart sank as a sense of foreboding washed over me. It seemed Raphael had decided to change his heir.
I subconsciously bit my lower lip. I was a little flustered but looked calm on the surface.
I glanced at Alex, still silently sitting at the dining table.
He slowly raised his head and looked at Leah with a faint smile. He looked gentle, but his eyes were as cold as ice, making one shudder.
Just as Alex was about to speak, the doorbell suddenly rang.
The moment Javier saw Leah appear, he revealed an irritable expression.
He rushed to me. "Laurel, are you alright?"
I was slightly stunned. I saw Javier standing before me and Sophina standing not far away with an unnatural expression. She must have secretly called Javier over.
"Miss Herrera," said Javier, staring at Leah with a challenging look. "I know the people of the Herrera family dislike Laurel, but if you dare to touch her, I'll make your life a living hell unless I'm dead!"
Leah squeezed out a smile on her gloomy face. "Do you think I'm afraid of you?"
There was a hint of mockery in her voice as if Javier's threat was just a joke to her.
"Then we'll see." Javier stared at Leah. His entire body emitted a cold aura. His body was tense as he said word by word, "I don't hit women, but I make an exception for sluts."
"Who are you scolding?" Leah flew into a rage. Her face was contorted with anger, and her facial features were squeezed together. She looked like a ferocious demon. "As expected, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. You uncultured thing!"
As soon as Leah finished her words, I stepped forward and slapped Leah's face.
The crisp sound of the slap was loud in the quiet living room. My palm was slightly red from exerting too much force. The stinging pain came from my palm, yet it made my heart feel indescribably carefree.
"How dare you hit me?" snapped Leah.
Her eyes were wide with disbelief as if it had never occurred to her that I might resist.
If I didn't hit her, someone else would.
I didn't want Javier to be involved. He was the most important person to me. I couldn't let him be in danger because of me.
Sophina seemed to be frightened at that moment. Her mouth was wide open, and her eyes were filled with fear. She did not expect me to slap Leah of the Herrera family.
On the other hand, Alex was still as calm as ever, as if he had expected me to attack.
After being slapped by me, half of Leah's face instantly turned red and swollen. Her eyes instantly shot out raging flames of anger, and she looked ferocious and terrifying.
"Laurel Parks, you bitch!" Leah cursed angrily, her choice of words extremely lacking.
I looked at her twisted face and replied coldly, "Who is the bitch scolding?"
Ever since I was young, I had never lost in scolding or fighting. After all, I had been influenced by them. It was difficult not to. However, I had never thought it would come in handy one day.
Leah was exasperated and reached out to counterattack. Unfortunately, she was interrupted by a scolding voice before she could reach out to me.
"Leah, what the hell are you trying to do?" Alex frowned and revealed an impatient expression. It was as if his pleasant mood had suddenly been ruined.
"Alex, didn't you see her hit me? Such an arrogant woman who doesn't care about her elders doesn't deserve to enter the Herrera family. Now that the child in her stomach is gone, do you still expect the Herrera family to recognize her?" Leah pointed at me as she spoke.
"She doesn't need anyone to acknowledge her identity. I'm the one she's married to. That's enough as long as I acknowledge her as my wife." Alex's voice was low and firm, and his eyes revealed an unquestionable strength.
His gaze fell on me, and the gentleness in his eyes made me feel a little dazed.
There was a burst of mocking laughter.
"Alex, do you think the Herrera Group can't leave you, and the Herrera family can't leave you either?" Leah's voice was filled with mockery.
Alex shook her head. "I don't care if Herrera Group and the Herrera family can leave me. What I care about is that as long as my wife can always be by my side, that's enough."
Upon hearing Alex's answer, I was stunned for a while. I knew it was just a lie, but my heart rippled.
I told myself it was only his expedient, but I could not help being glad.
"Wife?" Leah snorted, continuing with biting sarcasm, "Alex, are you sure the person your wife loves is you? If it were you, why would she let you sit in a wheelchair?"
Leah's words stabbed straight into my heart like a sharp knife. I clenched my fists subconsciously, my nails digging into my palms.
It seemed that the people of the Herrera family knew everything. My heart immediately felt as heavy as a rock.
