The people of the Herrera family never liked me. They would hate me if they knew that there was a chance to heal Alex's leg, but I ruined his life because of my reason.
Although they didn't care about Alex, at least Alex had some use for them.
However, if Alex could only sit in a wheelchair in the future, the people of the Herrera family would not be as respectful to him as before.
Sometimes, the people around one were the most snobbish.
"I believe her because she's my chosen one. I'll support her whatever decision she makes," said Alex.
Leah was trembling with anger at Alex's words. Her face was flushed with anger.
She took a step forward and walked before Alex. She shouted, "Alex, you're crazy! Look at her. She doesn't care about your life at all! She married into the Herrera family because she has other motives!"
Her voice was sharp and piercing.
Alex was just lame, not deaf.
The dark clouds had quietly gathered outside the window, blocking the originally bright sunlight.
A cold wind blew, rattling the windows. The atmosphere in the house was so oppressive that it was hard to breathe.
Sitting in the wheelchair, Alex frowned slightly and looked displeased.
He tapped his fingers lightly on the armrest of the wheelchair. Before Leah could continue, he interrupted her. "Enough! If there's something she's plotting, it means she's still valuable. I'll give it to her as long as it's something she wants and I have it."
His voice was low and firm, and his expression was serious.
Leah looked at Alex in disbelief and was speechless for a long time. From what she knew, Alex, who had always been high and mighty, would not say such a thing for a woman. In her opinion, Alex was simply an incurable love brain.
"You... you're unreasonable!" Leah finally came back to her senses. She pointed at me, her fingers trembling with anger. "She's a vixen who specializes in seducing the men around her! A fickle woman like her is not fit to be a member of the Herrera family!"
Her voice grew louder, almost a growl. Her expression twisted, looking hideous.
Alex's displeasure became increasingly apparent after hearing Leah's words. His eyes instantly turned cold as if covered with a layer of frost, making people shudder.
He looked at Leah coldly and said word by word, "Leah, my wife is the love of my life. If you and the Herrera family can't tolerate her, you don't have to come here and cause trouble in the future."
Leah was trembling with anger. She clenched her fists tightly, her nails digging into her palms.
She glared at me as if she wanted to skin me alive. Then, she turned around and stared straight at Alex. She sneered and left in exasperation.
I looked at Alex's clear but angry eyes, and my heart churned.
I knew he might have said those words to protect me but not from the bottom of his heart, but I was still touched.
The feeling of being protected was a little familiar but also unfamiliar.
After Leah left, Sophina and Javier looked at each other. They seemed to sense the current atmosphere was unsuitable for staying here.
Sophina lowered her head slightly. There was a hint of worry in her eyes. She gently pulled Javier's shirt.
Javier looked at me, then at Alex. He hesitated, but in the end, he consciously turned around and left with Sophina, leaving us enough space to talk.
The living room fell silent. Only the wind outside the window was still blowing.
I took a deep breath and slowly walked over to Alex. I squatted down so that I was at eye level with him. "Why are you helping me?" I asked softly. "Do you not mind what I've decided?"
If it were anyone else, they would feel resentful. After all, that potion could allow Alex to stand up again, but I had deprived him of his only chance.
Alex looked at me indifferently. His eyes were no longer filled with the anger of a moment ago but with tenderness and determination. He gently lifted his hand as if to caress my cheek, but seemed hesitant. In the end, his hand fell on my shoulder.
He exerted a little force and gently squeezed my shoulder. "I don't mind. After all, the medicine to heal the nerves is what you asked for. It's up to you who you want to use it on. What I want is for you to be by my side forever. It doesn't matter even if I can't stand up for the rest of my life."
His voice was soft, but each of his words was like a warm current that flowed into my heart.
I lifted my head and looked into his eyes. At that moment, I thought I saw the depth of his affection.
His words might be impulsive or unrealistic, but I was willing to believe him at that moment.
I bit my lower lip a little. Tears welled in my eyes. "You're so silly," I whispered.
Alex smiled gently with affection. He said, "Actually, I know you asked for the medicine for me in the first place. That's enough."
"You know?" I was slightly taken aback.
He nodded and withdrew his hand from my shoulder.
His slender fingertips were like him, so beautiful that it made one jealous.
"Laurel, what did you promise Yaeger?"
Upon hearing Alex's question, I couldn't help but be surprised. However, after thinking for a moment, I knew Bailee would probably tell him everything even if he didn't investigate.
I hesitated, then shook my head. "Nothing."
His eyes were fixed on me, saying, "That medicine is not something that can be obtained easily. Do you know where Yaeger got it?"
"Whatever Harold can get, I asked Yaeger, intending to try."
"He didn't make any requests to you? He gave you the potion?" I nodded. I didn't want Alex to worry about such a small matter. More importantly, with his current situation, I couldn't have any conflict with Yaeger.
"Laurel, I don't want you to lie to me."
"Yeah," I said back.
Alex told me to rest well at home. Then, he left the house with Lawrence. Looking at his back view as he left, I let out a long sigh.
After returning to my room, I immediately locked the door, turned on my tablet, and sat at the table. Then, I sent a document to the emails of the major shareholders of Herrera Group.
I received a notification message in less than half an hour. [The shareholders' meeting will be held next Monday.]
