The early morning light filtered gently through the thin curtains, casting a warm glow over every corner of the bedroom.
I slowly woke up, stretching lazily. After a restful night, my body felt completely at ease.
However, as I habitually reached beside me, I was met with cold sheets. Alex had not returned home the entire night.
A sense of unease crept into my heart. I grabbed my phone from the bedside table, and Samantha's message stood out starkly on the screen.
My brows furrowed as I clicked on it, filled with suspicion. A string of provocative words greeted me, but what truly ignited my fury was the attached photo— a blurry selfie of Alex's back.
Though his figure was somewhat indistinct, I recognized him instantly. Samantha was deliberately taunting me, making it clear that they had spent the night together.
Biting my lower lip, I felt a whirlwind of emotions—anger, resentment, and unwillingness—all tangling within me.
But I forced myself to suppress my feelings and head to the bathroom.
After freshening up, I went to the dining room, where Dorothy had already prepared a lavish breakfast.
Despite the table full of delicious food, I had little appetite. I took a few bites absentmindedly before retreating back to my room, collapsing onto the bed once again.
When I woke up again, the sunlight had become scorching, streaming through the window and shining directly onto my face.
I groggily checked the time—it was already noon.
Hearing movement, Dorothy hurried into the room with a concerned expression. "Mrs. Herrera, you're finally awake. I knew you didn't have much of an appetite earlier, so I made your favorite steamed fish and chicken stew. I'll warm them up for you now."
With that, she swiftly turned and headed toward the kitchen.
Sitting at the dining table, I sipped the steaming chicken stew while dialing Marvin's number.
As soon as the call connected, I asked anxiously, "Marvin, how's the investigation going?"
His voice came through the receiver. "Josephine didn't lie. The person who made the transfer used a foreign account, making it difficult to track. As for Arianna, she adamantly denies any involvement in the murder. The police currently lack sufficient evidence to directly link her to Wilhelm's death."
I frowned slightly, feeling a tinge of disappointment.
After a brief silence, Marvin suddenly asked, "How are things between you and Alex?"
The corner of my lips curled up slightly, and I replied teasingly, "Relax, we're not going to break up because of you."
Marvin let out a sigh of relief, "That's good. It's better to mend ten churches than to break a marriage. I don't want to be blamed for ruining one." I chuckled, "I thought you'd been hoping for our divorce all along."
Marvin cleared his throat awkwardly and quickly retorted, "Did I make it that obvious?"
He hesitated for a moment before adding, "Even if I did want you two to separate, I would never take advantage of the situation."
After hanging up, Dorothy approached me cautiously, concern written all over her face, and asked, "Mrs. Herrera, did something happen to the Herrera family?"
I slowly lifted my head, meeting her worried gaze. In a soft voice, I said, "Dorothy, it's nothing."
She hesitated for a moment before asking, "Then why didn't Mr. Herrera come home last night?"
I paused briefly, then replied with a deliberately casual tone, "It's nothing. It's normal for men to spend the night outside sometimes."
Dorothy looked momentarily surprised as if she hadn't expected me to be so calm and understanding.
"Mrs. Herrera, a marriage takes time to build. Don't let gossip and rumors destroy something so precious," Dorothy replied, her words were earnest and filled with concern.
I smiled faintly, "Dorothy, our relationship is solid."
In truth, I had always regarded my marriage with Alex as nothing more than a contractual arrangement—$1.5 million a year. 'How could such a relationship be easily broken?' I thought.
As long as I didn't see him as my husband but rather as my employer, there was no grievance I couldn't endure. After all, some people work themselves to the bone their entire lives and never earn this much money.
After lunch, I lounged in a rocking chair, basking in the sunlight.
The warmth of the sun made me drowsy, and I was about to drift off when the sound of hurried footsteps reached my ears.
Snapping out of my daze, I looked up to see Maliyah rushing in with a sorrowful expression.
"Laurel, if Alex loses his position as the heir, will he really be kicked out of the Herrera family?" she asked anxiously.
I stared at her in confusion and wondered, 'Why is she suddenly asking this?'
I had assumed she was preoccupied with Javier leaving for school abroad, but it turned out she was worried about Alex instead. She must have overheard something at the company.
Maliyah pursed her lips, her dark eyes tinged with red. In a choked voice, she said, "Alex injured his leg, and now the Herrera family is being so heartless toward him?"
I patted her shoulder reassuringly and said, "Don't worry. He can handle everything on his own."
"Laurel, do you regret it?" she asked, her gaze heavy as she carefully continued, "If Alex loses everything..."
"That won't happen," I answered firmly.
Maliyah frowned slightly and pressed on, "Isn't Alex angry?"
I finally understood the implication behind her words. She was asking if I regretted not giving him the antidote. If his injury truly cost him his inheritance, would I regret my decision?
Seeing that I remained silent, Maliyah sighed helplessly, "Laurel, I know you and Marvin grew up together and share a deep bond. But Alex has never treated you poorly. He nearly lost his life saving you, yet when he needed you the most, you chose to save someone else. Do you really think he isn't upset?"
I sighed softly, "Even if he is, it doesn't matter."
"Laurel, aren't you afraid someone else will take Alex away?" she asked, her tone laced with urgency.
I smiled, "If someone can take him that easily, it only means he was never mine to begin with."
"Laurel, I know you married Alex because of Aunt Bonnie," Maliyah murmured, biting her lip as she defended him. "But after spending so much time together, he's been nothing but good to you. Do you really not care about him at all?"
I knew that, in everyone's eyes, marrying Alex had been the luckiest thing that ever happened to me. But to them, I seemed completely ungrateful—never fulfilling my duties as a wife, only causing trouble.
Even my own family believed I was too heartless. The thought was almost laughable.
The truth was, Alex's feelings for me had always been an act, while mine had been real. Yet, to outsiders, it seemed like the opposite.
I started to explain, "Maliyah, the relationship between Alex and me isn't as bad as you think. He..."
Before I could finish my sentence, the sudden sound of the doorbell echoed through the house.
