I hesitated for a moment before steeling myself and softly saying, "Zachary, I want to stay with you, too, but I have so many things to do.
"But don't worry, I'll visit you often. Once I finish everything, I'll take you to so many fun places."
Zachary's eyes instantly turned red, tears welling up as he bit his lip, trying his hardest not to let them fall. Seeing him like this made my heart clench.
"Laurel, you have to keep your word. If you don't, Zachary will be really, really sad," he replied, his voice trembling as he suppressed his sobs. His small hands gripped me even tighter.
I nodded firmly and reassured him, "I will keep my promise. Zachary, you're the best. You need to listen to Aunt Susan and focus on getting better, okay?"
Melody, who had been watching from the side with cold indifference, suddenly interjected, "Zachary, stop clinging to your sister. She's very busy and doesn't have time to always be with you."
There was a subtle but unmistakable trace of mockery in her tone.
I turned to Melody, feeling a surge of disgust rise within me, but I forced down my emotions and put on a polite smile, "Mrs. Shepherd, I do have something I'd like to discuss with you privately. Would you be available now?"
Melody was momentarily stunned. After a brief hesitation, she silently nodded.
Melody turned and headed toward the study. I gently patted Zachary on the shoulder and said, "Zachary, go back to your room with Aunt Susan first. I'll come see you after I finish talking to Mrs. Shepherd."
Though reluctant, Zachary obediently nodded. As he followed Susan upstairs, he kept glancing back at me every few steps.
Taking a deep breath, I followed Melody into the study.
The study carried a faint scent of sandalwood. Melody sat behind the desk and gestured for me to take a seat across from her.
Leaning back in her chair, she crossed her arms over her chest and fixed me with a sharp gaze. "Speak. What exactly do you want?" she asked.
I pondered for a moment before speaking calmly, "You want me to drop the matter of Kailyn's past actions. Have you decided whether you're offering me shares of the Parks Group or something else?"
Melody's expression instantly hardened, her eyes sharpening like a blade. She exclaimed, "Giving you shares is out of the question. You already own twenty percent of the Parks Group. Isn't that enough for you?"
At her accusation, I let out a cold laugh filled with disdain, "Mrs. Shepherd, twenty percent may seem like a lot to some, but within the Parks Group, can I really have any authority?"
"Authority?" Melody scoffed as if she had just heard the most ridiculous joke. "You want to enter the Parks Group? Do you really think your father would agree?"
"Whether he agrees or not is my concern." I gave her an unreadable smile and stared at her intently before continuing, "Mrs. Shepherd, I've never done anything to harm your family since returning to the Parks family. Yet Kailyn has targeted me relentlessly, trying to hurt me over and over again. And now, because of her, I've lost my child. If this had happened to you, could you forgive her?"
Melody frowned, her expression darkening with displeasure as she replied, "Kailyn was simply afraid of losing everything. There are things she wasn't even aware of."
"Oh? Is that so?" I took a deep breath, suppressing the fury bubbling within me before speaking, "Fine, let's set her aside for now. If you're unwilling to give me shares of the Parks Group, that's acceptable. But someone has to atone for the loss of my child."
Melody gasped, "You want me to help you take down Bailee? Do you even know who she really is?"
Just as her words fell, there was a knock on the door. A servant entered, carrying two cups of coffee. One was placed in front of Melody, and the other was handed to me.
Once the servant left, Melody spoke again, her expression grave, "She may not be favored by the Lambert family, but her uncle dotes on her. If I make a move against her, I'll inevitably offend him."
I took a sip of the coffee, finding its bitterness unbearable. I wondered if the Parks family had deliberately served it this way.
I chuckled, "I never thought there was someone you were afraid of."
Melody let out a cold scoff, "Do you really think I'd risk offending him for you?"
"I believe that for Kailyn, you'd be willing to do anything." I smirked, my voice calm as I casually added, "By the way, how's Mr. Philbert's health these days?"
The moment those words left my mouth, Melody's face darkened instantly.
Her hand, gripping the coffee cup, abruptly halted. Then, she slammed it down on the table with a heavy thud. Her voice turned icy, and she questioned, "Are you threatening me?"
"Threatening? Mrs. Shepherd, you misunderstand. I'm simply concerned about Mr. Philbert's well-being," I replied with a faint smile, but my tone carried an unspoken edge. Meeting Melody's piercing gaze, I refused to show even a hint of fear.
"I know exactly what you're scheming. Don't think for a second that I don't," Melody crossed her arms and leaned back slightly, her eyes filled with both caution and disdain as she replied.
In response, I shook my head slightly, "Mrs. Shepherd, I have no complicated schemes. I just want to have a proper discussion with you. You see, I don't wish to make this situation uglier than it already is. We're both intelligent people—there's no need to lay everything out so bluntly."
Melody continued staring at me, scrutinizing and filled with suspicion.
The study fell into a dead silence, the only sound being the rhythmic ticking of the wall clock.
After a brief moment of hesitation, Melody's eyes flickered with indecision, as if weighing the pros and cons.
Finally, she spoke, "You want me to help you get rid of Bailee? That's impossible."
I set down my coffee cup, lifted my gaze to hers, and smiled faintly, "I would never commit a crime or ask someone else to do it for me. I simply want her reputation ruined and her to disappear from my sight."
Melody remained silent for a long while before finally speaking, "And how is that any different from killing her? By now, she's probably given up completely on Alex. Why can't you just let her go?"
"Let her go?" I let out a derisive laugh, glancing at Melody before responding in a low voice, "Did she ever think about letting me go? Did she spare my unborn child? Apologizing doesn't mean the victim has to forgive unconditionally."
I paused for a moment, then raised a brow as I sat up straighter before adding, "I wonder—if Mr. Philbert were to find out that Kailyn isn't actually a Parks family child, would he be so forgiving of your past deception?"
As soon as I finished speaking, Melody's face twisted in fury, her entire being radiating a murderous aura as if she wanted to kill me on the spot.
Then, out of nowhere, she let out a soft chuckle. In an instant, the cold hostility in her eyes vanished, replaced by a calm, composed demeanor.
Smiling, she said, "Laurel, as expected of Maddox's daughter—you're just as cunning as he is."
