Kailyn was dressed in a pale yellow dress, simple yet elegant. The same dress had appeared in a fashion magazine I'd once seen, worn by a celebrity, and it must have cost at least five figures. The pearl necklace around her neck only added to her image, making her seem sweet and gentle, almost too perfect to be real.
She bit her lip, her face tight with restraint. Her eyes locked on me, a mixture of resentment and frustration in her gaze. After a long silence, she spoke, her tone laced with complaint, "You knew we were mistaken, why didn't you explain?"
"Why should I?" I replied coolly, my expression calm as I met Kailyn's fiery stare.
Her face flushed with anger, her small frame trembling with barely contained rage. She really did look like someone who harbored a deep grudge against me—it was almost amusing.
She was just a young girl, new to the world, but her demeanor was sharp and prickly. It was clear her parents must have spoiled her, raising her to be this way, arrogant and demanding.
And yet, with her status, I could see why she'd feel entitled to act so haughty—after all, she had the backing of powerful people to rely on when things went awry.
As for me... it seemed I had nothing.
Not even a single person to turn to when I was wronged.
"Think about it. If it weren't for the misunderstanding, you wouldn't even have a chance to be here today," Kailyn sneered. "And with your status, do you really think you belong in this kind of place? You don't actually believe Alex is interested in you, do you?"
Angela tugged lightly on my arm, lowering her voice, "When did you get tangled up with this sharp-tongued little brat? Just got rid of one schemer, and now here comes another one.
I couldn't help but laugh a little, "The Norfield police station."
Angela blinked in realization, her eyes narrowing as she shot a quick glance at Kailyn. Then she grinned, her lips curling into a mischievous smile. "Miss Shepherd, did Laurel offend you somehow? And by the way, who's this 'Alex' you're talking about?"
At the mention of Alex's name, Kailyn's eyes briefly lit up, and her gaze drifted involuntarily toward him, not far away.
"Laurel, looks like your love life is a mess. Your rivals just keep coming, one after another," Angela muttered quietly. "But with someone as cold and distant as Alex, he probably wouldn't be interested in someone as fake and innocent as you."
"Angela, she's from the Parks family," I whispered, giving her a warning glance.
"Wadiff City?" Angela blinked in surprise, her expression shifting to one of cautious understanding. "I didn't expect the Parks family to show up here."
Kailyn quickly regained her composure, her pretty face twisting into a fake smile. "Miss Adams, I'd advise you to choose your friends wisely. You wouldn't want to end up getting sold out while you're counting someone else's money."
Angela lowered her gaze, a small smile tugging at her lips, her eyes dripping with disdain as she spoke, "I don't need you to worry about my affairs. Maybe you should be concerned with your own, or better yet, keep an eye on your precious Alex?"
Kailyn blinked, her fake smile vanishing in an instant. Her brows furrowed, and her expression darkened with discontent as she glared at Angela.
I shot Angela a glance, silently urging her to control herself. After all, Kailyn was from the Parks family.
Kailyn huffed, narrowing her eyes. "Today is Alex's birthday. I'm not about to get upset over someone with no status. I mean, Miss Adams, do you really think you belong in this kind of setting? I didn't see you at any of the events Austin attended in the past. Looks like that breakup was inevitable, huh?"
"Don't even compare Austin to Alex," Angela raised an eyebrow, keeping her smile, as bright and teasing as ever.
I sighed inwardly. Angela was really pushing things with this brat.
I gently tugged on her arm, lowering my voice. "Aren't you looking for a good father for your future kids? If you don't hurry, someone else might beat you to it."
Angela paused, her gaze shifting back to the crowd inside the banquet hall.
"Miss Adams, you don't actually think Alex could fall for her, do you?" Kailyn said, her voice dripping with arrogance. "Just because she's pretty doesn't mean she can marry into a rich family. That's the basic requirement, not the prize. Alex only helped you out of kindness—he didn't do it so you could cling to him."
"Miss Shepherd, how is it that your ears aren't working?" Angela grinned. "It's your Alex who wants my friend Laurel to marry into the Herrera family."
The snide tone in Angela's voice sent a chill down my spine.
Kailyn's face turned red with fury. "Alex was just helping her."
"Well, why don't we make a little bet?" Angela's smile turned even more mischievous as she looked at Kailyn.
I froze. Angela was seriously going head-to-head with the Parks family? Even though the Parks family didn't have much of a presence in Nifelheim City, they were powerful enough that Angela should've been cautious.
The Parks' two children rarely made public appearances, but that didn't mean they were harmless. I had to admit, Isaac, despite his calm demeanor, wasn't someone you'd want to mess with.
Three years ago, there had been a tragic incident in Wadiff City—a young woman had jumped from a building. It turned out that she had crossed paths with Kailyn, and rumors spread that Kailyn had a hand in the girl's downfall.
The woman had been ostracized by her classmates and lost her scholarship. Later, she was accused of cheating on an exam and expelled. In the end, she took her own life.
The girl's farewell letter implicated Kailyn, but within three days, the public outrage had died down. Even the girl's parents cleared Kailyn's name, claiming that their daughter had been lying.
That scandal had opened my eyes to what Kailyn was truly capable of. No matter how deep her mistakes ran, she always had people to clean up the mess and keep her living her life like a princess.
And that person was Isaac, who would make sure that Kailyn was always protected.
"What's the bet?" Kailyn asked, her lips curving upward in a mock smile, her eyes full of confusion, but she still held her lofty, superior stance.
"1.5 million dollars," Angela said, casually tossing out the sum. "Let's bet on whether my good friend Laurel can marry Alex. What do you think?" She paused dramatically, then added, "Is 1.5 million too much? You are from the Shepherd family, after all. I'm sure you live a life of luxury... maybe we shouldn't bet after all."
