Bang! The gunshot echoed through the still air. Before I could even react, Liam moved like a streak of black lightning, charging toward me at lightning speed.
His movements were so swift that all I saw was a flash of black, and then I was slammed to the ground by his weight.
"Liam, you..." My eyes widened in shock, and words caught in my throat as I saw blood bloom across his back. The crimson spread quickly, staining his clothes.
In that instant, my heart sank, and I was overwhelmed by the sudden turn of events.
I turned in terror, looking toward the direction of the gunshot. Through the grass ahead, I caught the faintest glimpse of a shadow moving.
It was only then that I fully realized—this was all part of a carefully orchestrated ambush. The shooter was hiding in the shadows... their target was me.
"Mrs. Herrera, you need to go!" Liam's voice broke through, laced with pain and urgency.
He struggled to lift his head, his eyes filled with worry and desperation.
'I couldn't tear my eyes away from Liam. He took a bullet for me—how could I possibly leave him behind and run now? If I do that, Liam will surely die.'
"No, I can't leave you! I'm taking you with me!" I gritted my teeth, attempting to lift Liam, but his injuries rendered him unable to move.
'I'm not sure how many of them there are. If I try to escape with Liam, they might go for the kill.'
Then, my attention shifted to the man with the knife.
The man had initially intended to kill me on this road, but now, the sudden turn of events had left him pale with fear.
He widened his eyes in terror, glancing between Liam and me, his face twisting into an agonized expression as though he wanted to cry but couldn't find the tears.
Seeing him in such a helpless state, a part of my fear surprisingly began to fade.
'He had planned to kill me, but instead, he got caught in this life-or-death mess and ended up taking a bullet for me. His luck was truly dreadful.'
'I thought for sure, out here in the middle of nowhere, facing a ruthless shooter, there was no way we were getting out of this alive.'
Strangely, the shooter didn't fire a third shot.
As confusion filled my mind, a familiar figure slowly emerged from the trees nearby.
It was him—the bald man from my past, the one who had once been so terrifying in my memories.
A chill ran through me. 'Is he here for revenge?' I had thought that group of ruthless killers had left long ago, but to my surprise, one of them had shown up right here.
His hair had grown out, but it was wild and untamed as if it hadn't seen a comb in days. His face was covered in dirt and sweat, his clothes torn by branches, giving him a disheveled, worn-out appearance.
The man slowly stepped toward us, his gaze sharp as a knife, sweeping over me with intensity. When he saw that I was unharmed, he couldn't help but let out a mocking laugh.
"Looks like you are lucky," he sneered. "Two shots, and neither hit you. Do you think you'll dodge the third?" His voice was hoarse, filled with bitterness and resentment.
I furrowed my brow, and the image of the young woman in the fox mask—who had died in front of me—suddenly flashed through my mind.
At this moment, my heart pounded in my chest, but I knew I couldn't afford to show the slightest sign of fear.
The road was remote, and the café was a fair distance away, but the sound of those two gunshots would surely reach Harold. After all, it was broad daylight, and no one in such an empty place would mistake gunfire for fireworks.
I forced myself to stay calm, making my voice sound steady and resolute. "You couldn't even take down a woman—what's there to be proud of?"
I glared at him with a look of disdain, my eyes filled with challenge. 'Maybe if I can provoke him, I can throw him off balance and buy us a chance to escape.'
His face turned ashen, his eyes locking onto mine with a menacing, cold intensity, as if he wanted to tear me apart. His grip on the gun trembled with fury, his knuckles turning white with the force.
"You bitch, I'm not going to let you die so easily," he spat, stepping closer and pressing the barrel of the gun hard against my forehead. The cold metal sent a jolt of numbness through my skin.
At the same time, his other hand reached up and roughly squeezed my face, his nails digging into my skin. His gaze was lewd and greedy as he looked me up and down, as though I were nothing more than prey for him to conquer.
"Go ahead, take the shot if you've got the guts," I stared at him without fear. My heart was racing with terror, but my face showed no sign of it—instead, I wore the look of someone ready to face death.
'I knew I couldn't back down now. If I did, it would be over.'
He scoffed, his face twisting into a sinister grin. "The moment I saw you, I knew I wanted you. I was going to make you suffer, just like you did to Skylar. Now, I'm going to take you right in front of them, strip you down, and make you regret everything. I'm curious to see if Alex can even make it in time to save you."
His voice grew louder, almost a roar, froth forming at the corner of his mouth.
'His words sparked a wave of intense anger and disgust within me.'
'I knew I couldn't act impulsively. I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself.'
"It wasn't me who killed Skylar; it was your allies," I said with a cold laugh, my tone eerily calm, as if we were just having a casual conversation.
"It's all your fault. If it weren't for you, Skylar would still be alive," the man's previously calm demeanor shattered, his eyes burning with rage as they locked onto me.
Seeing that I had completely pissed him off, a small sigh of relief escaped me, and a mocking smile tugged at my lips. "So, that's why you shot me?"
The man paused for a moment at my words, his expression faltering slightly. His grip on my chin tightened, and his face twisted with fury. "Don't worry, I will kill you. But for now, I'll make sure you suffer worse than death."
'I could tell he was losing control. If I could buy more time, maybe help would arrive.'
"Before you go ahead and kill me, did you even manage to kill the one who shot Skylar?" I scoffed, my voice dripping with disdain. "I bet you didn't, did you? Otherwise, you wouldn't be here alone. You don't have the guts to kill the real killer, yet you think you can take me down? Do you believe I'm the one who killed Skylar, or was it the guy in the wolf mask?"
