Alex clearly hadn't expected me to act so suddenly. He instinctively reached out to stop me, but I was faster—snatching the phone from his hand before he could react.
"Give me the phone," Alex said, his voice low and cold, laced with a subtle threat. His gaze hardened, fixed on me as if he wanted nothing more than to strike me.
'It's not surprising. No one's ever dared to challenge Alex so openly before.'
"No." I hid the phone behind my back, eyeing him defiantly. "Unless you agree to let me go."
I lifted my chin, glaring at him with fierce determination, showing no fear of the anger that flashed across his face.
A flash of menace crossed Alex's eyes. He suddenly grabbed my wrist and yanked me toward him, causing me to stumble and nearly fall into him.
"Let go of me!" I struggled, trying to break free, but his grip was unyielding, like steel around my wrist. The pain was so sharp, and it brought tears to my eyes.
I twisted and struggled, my hands thrashing in a frantic attempt to break free from his grasp.
"Give me the phone," Alex said in a low voice with undeniable authority. He leaned in close, his eyes burning with fury as if they might consume me whole.
I stared at him defiantly, gritting my teeth. "I'm not giving it back. What are you going to do about it?"
Despite the pain in my wrist, I held my ground, not a hint of retreat in my gaze. "Who are you so eager to see?"
A flicker of frustration passed through Alex's eyes. He released my wrist and leaned back in his wheelchair, closing his eyes as if trying to regain control over his emotions.
His chest rose and fell with heavy breaths, his face etched with exhaustion and frustration. "Why can't you just listen for once?"
Alex's voice carried a trace of exhaustion. "I'm doing this for your good." His tone carried a touch of resignation and a sigh, like someone speaking to a stubborn child.
"For my good?" I scoffed. 'If it weren't for his promise to Yvette, would he have risked his life to save me?'
"Are you worried that if I die because of you, you'll feel guilty?"
Alex's eyes narrowed slightly, his dark gaze locking onto mine. A sly grin tugged at his lips. "Guilty? You think someone like me feels that way?"
With that, he shifted his gaze away from me, turning his wheelchair as if to leave.
"You're not going anywhere," I quickly stepped in front of him. "You still haven't agreed to let me go."
I spread my arms, blocking his path, unwilling to back down.
'Even if I manage to make it downstairs and fight off the people he sent, I still won't be able to leave Honeydew Estate. The staff will never let me go once he gives the order.'
'And if I go to find Yaeger, our relationship will raise suspicions. I don't want Alex to know that I know Yaeger, and I definitely don't want him to find out about the agreement between us.'
Alex stopped his wheelchair and turned to face me, his eyes filled with disappointment. "Why are you so stubborn?"
"I'm not being stubborn. I want to get out of here," I said, my gaze steady and resolute.
Alex fell silent for a moment, then sighed. "Fine. I'll let you go, but only if you promise to stay safe. I won't restrict your freedom anymore."
His voice held a note of compromise, and I could see the concern flicker in his eyes.
I froze for a moment, surprised by how easily he agreed. As I looked at him, my anger slowly faded, replaced by a sense of confusion.
"Why did you suddenly change your mind?" I couldn't help but ask, my eyes filled with curiosity and uncertainty.
Alex met my gaze, a complex emotion flickering in his gaze. "Because I don't want you to hate me."
With that, he turned his wheelchair and gradually left the living room.
I stood frozen, watching his lonely figure retreat, feeling as if a heavy hand had tightened around my chest, throwing my breath off rhythm.
I glanced at the phone in my hand, hesitated for a moment, then hurried after him. At the door, I handed the phone to Alex. "It's yours," I said softly.
As Alex reached out to take the phone, the screen suddenly lit up.
When I saw Regina's name, any trace of guilt that had been lingering inside me vanished in an instant.
'A vivid image of a girl popped into my mind—her figure striking, full of energy, with a playful smile and bright, innocent eyes, the kind of girl who looks both cute and alluring.'
I had always believed Alex wasn't interested in women, especially after hearing how countless women who tried to get into his bed were ruthlessly thrown out.
Even Austin had wondered if Alex had some issue, or if his preferences were simply different from others.
It wasn't until after we shared a bed that I realized there was nothing wrong with him at all—he was a predator, a wolf, devouring everything in his path.
He was nowhere near as composed as I had thought. How else could he, in just a few days, manage to deal with Miss Harvey and still find time to get the phone number of the new neighbor next door?
"Alex, you promised you'd watch the movie with me! The film's about to start. Why aren't you here yet?"
On the other end of the line, Regina's voice came through, tinged with a hint of complaint.
I froze for a moment as though someone had struck me hard in the chest.
Since marrying Alex, he had always been a devoted husband—occasionally giving me gifts, bringing me to important events, buying me a house, and even risking his life to save me.
'But in the details of everyday life, he had never truly been there for me. It felt like a performance with no audience, and yet, I was the one who had lost myself in it.'
"I'll be there soon."
"Okay, I'll wait for you."
When Regina heard the confirmation on the other end, her voice instantly brightened with joy, clearly removing any earlier tension from her mind.
It turned out he was in such a hurry because he was going to the movies with Regina.
He had agreed to let me leave, not because of my insistence but because he feared I might ruin his date. I couldn't help but laugh bitterly to myself, though I maintained a calm exterior.
"Make sure to tell your people to stay out of my way." Without waiting for a response, I turned and walked back to the room.
I called Marvin, but he didn't pick up. I sank onto the bed, closed my eyes, and before I knew it, I had drifted off to sleep.
Suddenly, I was jolted awake by the sound of hurried footsteps, my body drenched in sweat.
Sophina stood at the edge of the bed, watching me carefully. "Laurel, did you have a nightmare?"
Yes, I had a nightmare—a horrible one. In it, Alex was shot in the head while trying to save me. He died right in front of me.
'It was just a dream, but it felt like a part of me had been torn away.'
