I was furious. My voice trembled slightly with anger.
Ethan wasn't angry at my harsh words. Instead, his lips curled into a smile.
He drove to the police station in silence. After getting out of the car, he glanced at me coldly with a warning look. "Laurel, you might not necessarily have good fortune after surviving a disaster. It's better for you to stay out of some matters."
With that, he drove off, leaving a trail of dust behind.
I watched him leave with mixed feelings and let out a long sigh.
At this moment, Marvin walked out from behind the door of the police station.
He was tall and straight, but his face had a tired look.
"The plan failed," I told him helplessly, my tone full of frustration.
Marvin was silent for a moment. He looked in the direction where Ethan left and slowly said, "All is not lost. As a police officer, it's normal for Ethan to possess counter-reconnaissance skills and vigilance."
He frowned slightly, deep in thought.
When Marvin sent someone to pick me up, I deliberately asked him to send Ethan over. I originally thought that I could get clues from him. Even if he denied it, he would probably have given himself away. I didn't expect him to be so good at pretending. Even his initial panic was fake.
"Then do you believe that Ethan is a dirty cop?" I looked up at Marvin and hesitated for a moment before asking.
Marvin didn't answer me directly, but I could feel he was already suspicious of Ethan.
By the time I finished giving my statement, the sky was already completely dark.
Along the way, the street lamps lit up one after another. The dim yellow light shone on the car, and I suddenly felt lost, as if I didn't know where I was or where I was going.
"Rest well at home and don't run around. When we catch the killer, I'll inform you immediately." Marvin broke the silence. His tone was filled with concern.
My expression was calm as I looked at the dazzling lights outside the window. I said softly, "If another case happens, remember to tell me."
Marvin said half-jokingly, "Do you think it's not tiring enough for me?"
The corners of his mouth curled up slightly as he tried to ease the oppressive atmosphere.
However, as soon as he finished speaking, his expression suddenly darkened, and his tone became serious and cold. "Are you hiding something from me? That killer didn't escape on his own. Did you deliberately let him go?"
He turned his head and stared at me intently. His gaze seemed to be able to see through all my secrets.
My heart skipped a beat, and my fingers subconsciously tightened around the corner of my blouse. My knuckles turned white from the force.
I tried to keep my composure, but I couldn't hide the flash of panic on my face. "What makes you think that? How could I have let the killer go?"
Marvin stared at me intently. The car slowly stopped by the side of the road. He turned sideways and looked straight at me. "Don't lie to me."
His brows were tightly knitted together, worry written all over his face.
I avoided his gaze and suddenly felt flustered.
His sharp gaze was fixed on me, and he didn't seem to believe what I said.
"I-I just want to find out the truth my way." I hesitated, then spoke, my voice barely audible.
"Your way?" Marvin raised his voice. His face was filled with anger. His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles turned white. "Do you know that by doing this, you might bring the entire case to a standstill and put more people in danger?"
His eyes revealed anxiety and helplessness. He was both angry and worried about my actions.
I lowered my head and didn't dare to look into his eyes. I didn't feel guilty at all. After all, since the other party could hire someone to kill me, why couldn't I give him a taste of his own medicine?
"I know, but only by letting him go can I find out the truth I want. Besides, I've always been a vengeful person." My lips curled into a delighted smile.
"Do you know it's illegal to give a false testimony?"
Marvin took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down. His chest heaved violently, and it was obvious that he was still trying to suppress his anger. "You were too impulsive this time."
His tone was filled with helplessness and disappointment.
I looked up at him. At this moment, I suddenly realized that Marvin really did look like a police officer.
"Liam is injured. If I didn't let him go, did you think he would surrender and wait for you to come?" I said casually, playing dumb.
Marvin tried to remain patient as he said word by word, "With your ability, you could subdue him if you were armed, yet you let him go on purpose. Why did you let him go? Who did you ask him to kill?"
Marvin looked at me. The anger in his eyes gradually subsided, replaced by a trace of panic.
I was slightly stunned at his worried expression. After a moment of silence, I slowly said, "His accomplice killed the woman in the fox mask, so he sought me for revenge.
"When I let him go, I told him that if I had really caused Skylar's death, then the person who hired the killer and his accomplice deserved to die."
After listening to what I said, Marvin frowned. His eyes revealed complicated emotions, including anger, worry, and a hint of helplessness.
He took a deep breath. "Laurel, solving a case requires evidence and procedures. If the murderer was handed over to the police, he might reveal the mastermind.
"Letting him go is too risky. The entire situation will be out of control, and you will be in danger. If he really kills the mastermind and his accomplice, he will definitely not let you off."
"I know." I smiled nonchalantly. "The enemy is in the dark while we are in the light. If they insist on killing me, they will definitely send someone else to kill me. I want to lure the enemy out."
Marvin looked at me. The anger in his eyes had completely dissipated, leaving only a trace of worry and concern. "Laurel, I know you're anxious to find out the truth about my sister's murder, but you can't do anything illegal."
"Don't worry, I won't be stupid enough to get into trouble. There's no other way now, so I can only go all out."
Marvin sighed helplessly. When I got out of the car, I saw Yaeger getting out of the car facing me.
He was wearing a dark brown suit. His eyes were slightly narrowed, and he looked like he had just woken up. He slowly got out of his car.
The moment he saw me, he pretended not to know me and walked straight into Honeydew Estate.
I hurriedly bid farewell to Marvin and followed Yaeger. However, when I entered the elevator, I found Yaeger with his hands in his suit pockets. He lazily opened his eyes and looked at me. He asked in a deep voice, "I heard that your husband's legs can be saved?"
