"Is that so?" I raised my head and glanced at Yaeger. A trace of imperceptible vigilance flashed across my eyes, and my hands subconsciously clenched the corner of my clothes. "You're quite well-informed."
There was a faint smile in Yaeger's cold eyes. Under the light, that smile was somehow bewitching.
He tilted his head slightly, his fingers casually in his pocket as he leaned against the elevator wall. "It seems that Bailee has really spent a lot of effort on your husband."
When I suddenly heard Yaeger mention Bailee's name, I couldn't help but be stunned. The bag in my hand almost slipped, and my emotions were slightly affected.
I quickly stabilized myself and took a deep breath, trying to look calm.
Yaeger cleared his throat. His beautiful brown eyes seemed to contain countless stars within as they looked straight at me.
He said unhurriedly, "Harold found a specialist to treat your husband's leg injury, and Bailee called your husband immediately. I believe the two of them should be having dinner together now, right?"
I instantly frowned at his words and felt a surge of anger from within. Harold's move was really sinister. He did me a favor but gave Bailee the credit.
If I told Alex about the collaboration with Harold, Alex would find out that I used to participate in underground boxing.
Harold knew that I couldn't expose Bailee's lie in public. He was clearly doing it on purpose.
I didn't expect a police chief like him to be such a despicable person. I bit my lower lip tightly and tried to suppress my anger, forcing myself to look calm.
Out of the corner of my eye, I inadvertently saw Yaeger staring at me with interest. His gaze seemed to see through me. I couldn't help but turn my head slightly to avoid his gaze.
"Laurel, did my uncle look for you?" Yaeger spoke flirtatiously into my ear with his low and lazy voice.
He took a step closer to me, and the faint scent of men's cologne on him became more distinct.
"What did you promise him? The credit should have been yours, but it was snatched away by Bailee. Aren't you angry?" He narrowed his eyes slightly, a hint of probing and playfulness in them.
Yaeger stared at me meaningfully. His tone was very confident as if he had personally seen me reach some kind of deal with Harold.
"No," I blurted out without hesitation, my voice subconsciously rising.
Then, I raised my head and looked at him standing beside me. He was taller than me. He had a straight nose and chiseled facial features. There was a playful smile in his brown eyes that inexplicably made my heart beat erratically.
I lowered my head slightly, avoiding his intense gaze, and clasped my hands uneasily in front of me.
"Are you really not angry?" He tilted his head slightly, a faint smile on his lips. He moved closer to me, his body almost touching mine.
I could feel the heat emanating from his body. My heart skipped a beat, and my breathing quickened.
"Why do you think Harold is willing to save Alex because of me? Bailee is his favorite—"
"If Harold really wanted to help Bailee, he would have given her a chance long ago instead of waiting until now," Yaeger interrupted me.
"Then why are you so sure that Harold would look for me?" I tried my best to remain calm. I clenched my fists tightly, my nails almost digging into my palms. However, my heart was beating faster and faster, as if it was about to jump out of my throat.
"Actually, I'm also curious." Yaeger stared at me with a smile. The probing look in his eyes intensified. He gently placed his hand on the handrail of the elevator and trapped me in front of him. "What did you promise him?"
When I saw Yaeger leaning forward slightly and his handsome face getting closer and closer to me, I subconsciously took a step back. My back was against the elevator wall, and I could not retreat.
"What do you think I'd agree to?" Fortunately, the elevator door finally opened at this moment. I hurriedly turned sideways and tried to leave.
After walking out of the elevator, Yaeger did not intend to let me go. He strode forward and easily kept up with my pace.
"Divorce Alex? If that were the case, I'd be very happy." His hand gently rested on my arm. The touch was like an electric current, making me stiffen.
I shook off his hand without batting an eyelid. "I'm not divorcing him," I said grimly.
Yaeger suddenly reached out and pulled me to a corner.
The wall was against my back, and his face was inches away. His hands were on the wall, trapping me between his arms.
"Laurel, if I hadn't left Nifelheim City back then, would you still have married Alex?"
His breath sprayed on my face. I could feel his heat. His eyes were filled with affection.
"Even if you hadn't left Nifelheim City, we wouldn't have been together."
I admitted that Yaeger was the boy I liked when I first fell in love. He was the person I had a crush on during those ignorant years.
But I also knew that there was an unbridgeable gap between us. Even if he had stayed in Nifelheim City, we wouldn't have been able to get together.
Yaeger looked at me with a faint smile. "Why? Have you never liked me?"
"I did," I admitted openly.
Yaeger nodded narcissistically as if he already knew how charming he was back then.
Back then, there were always secret love letters in his locker. Who would have thought that he would still be single until now?
"But it's impossible for us to be together. We're not well-matched," I said as I tried to push him away. "Besides, you left Nifelheim City, and now I'm married to someone else."
"Does Alex really care about you?" Yaeger said in a low voice. His tone was filled with sarcasm. "The two of you got married in a flash, right? Your relationship doesn't have a solid foundation. You like his looks. Do you think I'm not as good-looking as him?"
I heaved a deep sigh of relief. "Yes, he's indeed more good-looking than you."
Yaeger frowned slightly. "But does he care about you?"
"Isn't it enough that he saved me with no regard for his own life?" I said coldly, trying to sound firm. "Yaeger, you don't know me at all. Your love for me is only transient." I paused. "Forbidden fruit is the sweetest."
"Have you ever thought about how Alex would repay Bailee's kindness?" Yaeger changed the topic and instantly returned to his original cold and aloof appearance.
My lips curled into a reluctant smile. "If Alex wants a divorce, I'll agree to it."
"You only like your husband a little?" Yaeger smiled. "Looks like I still have a chance."
