"Murder case?" Sophina was shocked when she heard those words.
I curled my lips slightly and looked at the police officer calmly.
His deep brown eyes were fixed on me as if he wanted to see if my expression would change. I met his gaze and said calmly, "Please wait for me."
The man hesitated for a moment, a trace of imperceptible doubt in his eyes. Then he nodded and said nothing more. He just stood there quietly. The dignified aura he exuded seemed to freeze the air in the entire living room.
Sophina hurriedly held my arm. Her brows were tightly furrowed, and her tone was filled with worry. "Laurel, why don't I call Mr. Herrera? They have no right to take you to the police station for questioning. No, I should call Mr. Adams."
As she spoke, she frantically rummaged in her bag for her phone. Her fingers were trembling.
Looking at her flustered and anxious expression, I gently patted her hand and revealed a comforting smile. I said softly, "There's no hurry. I'll eat something first."
When I sat down at the dining table, Maliyah was already standing beside me.
Her expression was calm, and her voice was low but firm. "Laurel, I'll go with you."
I wolfed down a few mouthfuls of food and shook my head slightly at Maliyah. My tone was unquestionable. "No need. All of you stay at home." With that, I picked up my bag, stood up, and walked to the door.
"Laurel." Sophina's hands were trembling as she hugged my arm. She nervously glanced at the police officer standing at the door and tightened her grip on my arm. "It's a murder case. Laurel, why don't I get a lawyer to accompany you?"
Her eyes were filled with worry and uneasiness as if I would never come back.
The police officer at the door cleared his throat and spoke again. "Can we go now?"
His voice was abrupt in the stillness of the living room, breaking the momentary silence.
I nodded, though my mind was full of questions. What kind of murder could I possibly be involved in?
Did the bald guy kill the mastermind? But thinking about it, it was impossible. His actions probably wouldn't be that fast.
Moreover, he was a wanted criminal. It was impossible for him to appear again so brazenly.
Actually, I didn't know much about the bald guy's identity. I only knew from Marvin that he had once been imprisoned for 15 years for intentional assault. Later, he was wanted all over the country for kidnapping someone.
Perhaps he had committed murders that the police did not know about.
Apart from Wilhelm's case, there was only one other recent murder case in Nifelheim City, the female corpse found on the riverside.
Marvin already knew the other party's identity, but he was unwilling to reveal anything to me.
I couldn't help but feel suspicious. Could it be that the victim and I knew each other? Was that why the police wanted me to cooperate with the investigation?
Although I felt a little strange, I wasn't afraid at all. Even if there was evidence against me, I believed that Harold would be able to settle it for me. After all, we were in the same boat now.
I was brought to the police station. This was the first time I was sitting in an interrogation room.
The light in the interrogation room was deathly pale. The clock on the wall ticked. Every tick felt like a knock on my heart.
A cold table separated me from the police officer opposite. On the table was a steaming coffee. In this cold environment, the coffee's heat seemed out of place.
I picked up the paper cup and took a sip, trying to use the warm liquid to dispel the chill in my heart.
At this moment, the uniformed police officer sitting opposite me took out a photo and handed it to me. His eyes were fixed on me. "Do you know this man?"
There was a man and a woman in the photo. The woman had a delicate face and a thin figure. She had blonde curly hair. Although she was not very beautiful, she was pleasing to the eye. The man sitting beside her had short hair, thick eyebrows, and big eyes. His lips were curled into a smile.
I tightened my grip on the paper cup and secretly took a deep breath. I looked up at the police officer who had asked the question.
"This man is Wayne." I frowned slightly, and there was an unconcealable disgust in my tone. "He almost killed me. Of course, I know him."
The police officer then asked, "Then did you know him before?"
He leaned forward slightly, his brown eyes fixed on me.
The quiet surroundings gave off a strong oppressive and suffocating feeling.
"No," I answered without hesitation, looking straight into his eyes.
"You really don't know him?" The man raised his voice, and there was a hint of doubt in his tone. A flicker of doubt flashed across his eyes as if he didn't believe me.
I put down the paper cup in my hand and nodded calmly. I sneered inwardly, but at the same time, I heaved a sigh of relief.
It seemed that the police had only asked me to come over and cooperate with the investigation. However, why did they have to mobilize so many people?
"If he didn't know you, why would he want to kill you?" His voice was more serious now, his eyes sharp.
I looked up and met his slightly cold and serious gaze. I took a deep breath and said unhurriedly, "I want to know too."
I paused slightly and looked at him steadily. "You should ask him, not me."
It seemed that the police had also realized that Wayne's target for entering the police station was not Arianna but me.
"He's dead." The police officer's voice was low and calm as if he were stating something perfectly normal.
I looked coldly at the police officer sitting in front of me and raised my eyebrows. There was a hint of mockery in my tone. "Does his death have anything to do with me?"
"It seems that you're not surprised by his death." The police officer's slightly deep voice paused. "Aren't you curious about how he died?"
"Does it have anything to do with me?" I smiled, but there was no warmth in my smile. "Too many people want to kill me. It should be the police's responsibility to track down the killer."
The police officer who interrogated me smiled, but he still looked at me coldly, as if I was the key to their case.
"Do you have a suspect, then?" His voice echoed through the interrogation room, breaking the brief silence.
"A suspect?" I sighed softly. "Without evidence, it's slander. It's more appropriate for the police to investigate the case."
As soon as I finished speaking, the door of the interrogation room was suddenly pushed open. A cold wind blew in as the door opened, and the temperature around me suddenly dropped. The police officer who interrogated me immediately stood up and called out respectfully, "Mr. Spencer."
