Carey was right. How could there be such a clear line between good and bad people?
Bad people didn't have the words "bad person" written on their faces, and good people were not necessarily good. Being human, everyone might have done something selfish and harmful to others.
Carey sent me home. Before he left, he told me to rest well tomorrow and to contact him when I woke up.
I caught the implication. It seemed he was worried, too, that I'd go out on my own and meet with some mishap.
Immediately after I returned home and unlocked the door, Sophina stood up from the sofa and hurriedly walked toward me.
"Laurel, are you alright?" As she spoke, her eyes reddened, as if she was reminded that everything that had happened today was too terrible.
Maliyah also got up from the sofa. She narrowed her eyes and looked like she had just woken up. She leaned close to me. "Laurel, why did those policemen take you in for questioning?"
As she spoke, she raised her hand to rub her sleepy eyes and added, "I told Sophina you would be fine, but she was so worried."
I smiled, interrupted Maliyah, and gave her a sidelong glance. "What about you? Don't you have to work tomorrow? Aren't you going to bed?"
Maliyah couldn't help but yawn. She took her phone from her jacket pocket and looked at the time. Then, she hurriedly said, "Laurel, I'll go back to sleep first. Remember to let me know if you need anything."
I nodded and looked at Sophina. "You should go back to sleep too. It's getting late."
Sophina hurriedly waved her hand. "I'm not sleepy. Laurel, I'll make something for you to eat. You didn't even have a good meal today."
When I returned to my senses, Sophina had run to the kitchen excitedly.
It was dark outside the window. At this moment, the hustle and bustle of the city were shut out by a window, leaving only the silence in the house.
Sophina was busy in the small kitchen. The dim yellow light shone on her, creating a long shadow.
After a while, she carried a plate of spaghetti and made two more dishes. Then, she carefully placed them on the table.
"Have some. You must be starving after a busy day," Sophina said softly, her eyes filled with concern.
I looked at the food on the table, but my stomach churned. I had been starving for a long time. So, I didn't feel hungry now, and I had no appetite.
I forced a smile. "Thank you, Sophina."
After saying that, I picked up the fork and started eating spaghetti.
"Laurel, what did the police call you over to ask?" Sophina looked at me with lingering fear.
I stopped what I was doing, looked at the worried look in her eyes, let out a soft sigh, and tried to maintain my composure. "Don't worry. They just asked a few questions. It's no big deal."
"Isn't it a murder case?" Sophina frowned. Her eyes were filled with doubt and uneasiness.
"The person who attacked me at the police station is dead," I said as I ate spaghetti mechanically. But I felt like there was no taste in my mouth, so I stood up and walked to the fridge to get a bottle of chili sauce. After I sat back in my chair, I found Sophina looking at me solemnly.
"Is that man dead?" Sophina's voice trembled slightly and her expression was solemn.
I nodded. "Yeah. He's dead."
However, I could not help but feel puzzled. Why were the police so sure that I knew that person called Wayne? Was it because I didn't care about my safety when I did that?
Outside the window, a gust of cold wind blew, rattling the windows and making the atmosphere inside the room even more oppressive.
I put down my fork and looked out the window, my thoughts drifting back to the scene at the police station earlier in the day.
When that man suddenly rushed out and attacked me, his eyes were filled with madness and determination.
One of the police officers who had tied him up was Ethan. Perhaps he already knew why the man appeared at the police station, but I wondered why that person wanted to kill me.
"Laurel, what are you thinking?" Sophina's voice interrupted my thoughts.
"Nothing. I'm just thinking about what happened today. Something doesn't feel right." I came back to my senses and looked at Sophina.
Sophina nodded thoughtfully. "I also think this matter doesn't seem to be that simple. Why did that man attack you? Moreover, the way the police handled it is strange. Why did they mobilize so many people if it was only a regular inquiry?"
I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down. "It's fine. The police just suspect that something is going on between Wayne and me. I also want to know why he wanted to kill me."
I guessed maybe they thought I'd found some important clue, so they wanted to silence me.
I took a sip of the lemonade I had just poured. It was so sour that I frowned.
"Laurel, did Mr. Adams send you back? Didn't he reveal anything to you?" Sophina asked.
I was slightly stunned. I looked up at Sophina and asked, "You informed Marvin?"
Sophina nodded and looked confused. "After the police took you away, I called Mr. Adams."
After saying that, she hesitated and stammered, "Actually, I also called Mr. Herrera, but..."
"He didn't answer?" With that, I smiled self-deprecatingly.
I had originally thought that Alex had called Carey over, but unexpectedly, it was Marvin.
"The call got through, but the person who picked up the phone was a woman." Sophina looked up at me with a complicated gaze. She looked like she wanted to say something but hesitated.
I met her gaze and smiled, looking like I didn't care.
After a while, Sophina finally said, "Laurel, do you want to call Mr. Herrera?"
I shook my head. Even if I called Alex, I couldn't get him back.
"If he were going to come back, he should have been back already." My tone was calm, but my fingers holding the fork tightened. Then, I told Sophina, "It's getting late. You should go back and rest, too."
"I'll go and run your bath water first." Sophina immediately stood up. When she turned around and walked to the side bedroom, she suddenly stopped and turned to look at me. "Laurel, there's an email in your mailbox, but I can't open it."
When I heard this, I was stunned for a moment. Then, I nodded at Sophina. Looking at her departing figure, I immediately took out my phone and realized there were a few missed calls on my phone.
The other party should have called while I was questioned at the police station.
It wasn't until Sophina left and I came out of the bathroom after my bath that I called this person back.
It rang three times before she hung up.
Less than a minute later, my phone screen lit up.
Then, I saw a message. [Someone in the Phantom Market wants to acquire a painting. The price is more than 400 thousand dollars. Are you interested, Laurel?]
