Seeing that I was hesitating, as if afraid that I would refuse, Lizette Basile quickly added, "Laurel, this price is already sky-high. Aren't you short of money now?"
I immediately came to my senses and, with a hint of a smile, said, "Who would complain about having too much money?"
Although I said that, I knew well that money was only a superficial appendage to me.
However, although I was not short of money now, there was still a long way to go in the future, and there must be many places where I needed money.
For example, I needed a lot of money when Javier went to study abroad.
As for men, I felt they were far less reliable than money. Moreover, the culprit behind Angela's death might not be a single person, but a team.
At the thought of this, my heart sank.
Right now, I could only quickly accumulate more money in case of emergencies.
After all, money could buy a person's life, but without money, even self-preservation was a problem.
"I need to take a look at the original first. It might take some time," I whispered.
Upon hearing that I was willing to take the order, Lizette's voice on the other end of the line had a hint of slyness. "Laurel, don't worry. Time is not a problem. The buyer will agree as long as you can do it."
Hearing her praise, I subconsciously pursed my lips.
Lizette had always been aloof and solitary, rarely praising others. Now that she said those words today, I guessed the deal was extraordinary.
"Laurel, I heard that you almost lost your life recently. Is that true?" Lizette's voice was instantly filled with curiosity. "Why do I feel that you've been in a lot of trouble since you married Alex? Do you two have incompatible horoscopes? Is it you who brings bad luck to him, or he to you?"
I frowned slightly, and a trace of displeasure flashed across my eyes. "It was just an accident."
"What accident? I think it's a fight within a wealthy family. Laurel, it's not like you can't make money. Isn't it too dangerous for you to make this 1.5 million dollars a year?"
I frowned silently. Before I could speak, Lizette's meaningful laughter came from the other end of the phone. "Laurel, you can't risk your life just to be with a handsome man."
I raised my hand and rubbed my eyebrows. There was a hint of helplessness in my tone. "Am I that kind of person?"
"Aren't you?" Lizette asked in confusion. Then, she sighed softly, and her voice suddenly became cold. "Do you want us to help you solve it?"
"No," I said grimly, determination in my eyes. "I'll come to you if I need to."
The situation wasn't clear yet. I didn't want to involve Lizette and the others. After all, if I exposed them, it was equivalent to exposing myself. I couldn't put everyone in danger because of my business.
Moreover, I was being watched by the police, so I naturally couldn't act rashly.
Seeing that I refused, Lizette sighed sadly, "Do you think we have to be so hidden from the light?"
"What do you think?" I chuckled softly, trying to ease the atmosphere. "Alright, if I'm in trouble, I'll come to you."
"It's a deal." Lizette's tone became serious. "Laurel, be careful. Don't let all your hard-earned money end up benefiting your husband."
She paused and added, "Remember, there's no such thing as love in this world. Don't be stupid and jump into the fire pit again." With that, she hung up.
I listened to the sound of being hung up on the phone and a bitter smile spread across my lips.
I couldn't help but sigh at how energetic and straightforward Lizette had always been. I also vaguely heard a harsh and noisy voice on the other end of the phone. Then, I glanced at the time on my phone, shook my head, and smiled.
I guessed she must be looking for a suitable target in the bar now.
She always said that the best hunters often thought of themselves as prey. When she was bored, she always liked to seek entertainment for herself.
I took a deep breath and fell back on the bed, trying to relax my exhausted body and mind.
However, my thoughts were like a wild horse that had run out of control. I tossed and turned in bed, unable to fall asleep. Helpless, I sat up and turned on my computer.
The screen lit up, and I saw an email from Lizette.
I clicked open and entered the password before I opened the file.
Inside was a portrait of a famous painter from Seatherland. It was a dark oil painting. The colors on the canvas were intense, with deep hues that seemed to engulf the viewer. Just one glance at it filled me with a sense of suffocation.
Such paintings might appear simple, but replicating them was exceptionally challenging. Despite the substantial sum offered by the client, a successful reproduction would yield a piece valued at more than 40 million dollars.
After all, the true author of this painting had passed away, and even authenticators might not be able to distinguish the authenticity of a painting I painted.
As I looked at the painting on the computer screen, my grandmother's face involuntarily emerged in my mind.
Perhaps my deceased grandmother never imagined that her most proud student, her beloved granddaughter, would now use her talented painting skills to copy someone else's works.
I closed the computer and felt an inexplicable sense of sadness.
Climbing into bed, I began to count sheep, one, two... And when I reached almost one thousand, I finally felt a hint of drowsiness.
At that moment, I suddenly heard a rustling sound outside the house.
I sat up abruptly, my heart beginning to race uncontrollably. With bare feet, I carefully got out of bed, trying my best not to make a single sound.
I picked up the baseball bat beside the wardrobe and held it tightly. Then, I walked toward the door step by step. With every step I took, my heart beat faster and faster. All I could hear at that moment was my thumping heartbeat.
I knew it couldn't be Alex, nor could it be anyone else. At this late hour, anyone who could successfully unlock the fingerprint lock and evade surveillance cameras must be powerful.
I held my breath and pressed my ear to the door, trying to hear what was happening outside.
However, apart from the intermittent rustling, I could not hear anything else.
Since this person had the guts to come alone, I wondered if he was trying to silence me.
My palms began to sweat, and my hand holding the baseball bat began to tremble slightly.
Suddenly, the sounds outside disappeared, and the entire world fell into a dead silence.
I swallowed nervously, wondering if I should open the door and go out and take a look.
Just as I was hesitating, my phone suddenly rang again. The sharp ringtone sounded especially terrifying in the silent night. I was so frightened that my entire body trembled. My hand holding the baseball bat trembled.
I picked up the phone, and an unknown number appeared on the screen.
My heart suddenly beat faster, and an ominous feeling welled up in my heart. I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down. Then, I slowly pressed the answer button...
