"Hello?" I couldn't keep the tremor out of my voice. Even I could hear the fear in it.
The surroundings were silent as if the sound I heard just now was just my imagination.
Outside the window, the city lights shone faintly through the heavy curtains.
The room was so quiet that one could hear the clock ticking on the wall. Suddenly, a faint sound came from the living room, as if someone had gently moved a chair.
My heart suddenly tightened, and all the nerves in my body instantly tensed. The laziness and relaxation from before instantly disappeared without a trace.
I held my breath and listened intently, trying to catch the sound again.
"What's wrong? You don't sound right." Marvin's voice came from the other end of the phone, filled with concern and worry.
The familiar voice was like a ray of light in the darkness. It eased the tension in my heart for a moment.
I took a deep breath and tried to compose myself. "Someone came in from outside," I said in a deep voice, "But he seem to have left."
"Are you sure you didn't hear wrongly?" Marvin's tone was filled with doubt.
However, it was reasonable for him to have doubts. After all, Honeydew Estate was not an ordinary neighborhood. Security personnel patrolled around the clock, and there were cameras in all public spaces.
More importantly, there was a smart lock in the house. Without fingerprints or a password, one couldn't enter so easily.
"No, I heard it perfectly," I replied firmly.
Although I wasn't sure of the other party's identity, I knew he didn't come with good intentions.
"Lock the door and don't go out. I'm coming over now." Marvin's voice was firm and decisive. Before I could respond, he hurriedly hung up.
Holding my phone, I walked to the door, locked it from the inside, and pushed it hard to confirm I had fastened it perfectly.
At this moment, there was dead silence outside the house. It was as if the sound had never appeared, but I knew the intruder might still be nearby. He might have already sensed that I had noticed him.
I stood in the doorway, wondering if I should go outside and check.
Suddenly, the door handle turned unexpectedly, emitting a creaking sound. It was particularly eerie in the silent environment.
I shuddered at the sudden sound and instinctively took a step back. My heart began to beat wildly as if it were going to burst through my chest.
"Dammit, he's still out there." I cursed silently, beads of sweat forming on my forehead.
But in the next second, I struggled to calm myself down and kept my eyes glued to the door handle. The handle turned once again. The person outside seemed to have confirmed that I had locked the door, but instead of leaving, he quickly turned it several more times.
I held my breath, not daring to breathe loudly. I stared fixedly at the door, silently praying the person would leave quickly.
However, I also knew he would not leave easily since he had the guts to appear here.
I wondered what his purpose was in coming here.
The door was not forced open, and the sound suddenly stopped.
I leaned in the doorway, keeping my ear close to the door. But I heard no sound from outside.
The surroundings were silent, so quiet that I could hear my heartbeat. I wondered if the other party had given up.
But when I slightly let down my guard, I heard a series of banging on the door. This sound was like a heavy hammer, hitting my nerves hard.
I guessed the person outside had realized I had noticed his barging in without permission. He might be angry because of it and wanted to silence me.
I wondered who he was. It was obvious he wanted to come in.
"Who the hell are you? What do you want?" I summoned up the courage to shout, my voice shaking with anger. "I've already called the police."
If he had a gun, it would be dangerous for me to go out rashly. Therefore, the only thing I could do now was to wait for Marvin to come.
I comforted myself silently as I tightened my grip on the baseball bat.
The person outside the door didn't respond to me.
After a while, footsteps sounded outside the door, and it got further and further away.
I secretly sighed in relief, my tension easing slightly. But before I could recover, more rummaging sounds came from outside.
I was shocked, wondering if he was looking for the key to unlock the door.
I was burning with anxiety as I wondered what he wanted. All kinds of terrifying images kept appearing in my mind.
I held the baseball bat tightly in my hand. My palms were sweaty. I hesitated whether to attack him when he was unprepared.
But the fact that the person outside the door hadn't left despite knowing that I had notified others to come meant only one thing. He was confident that he could kill me.
The thought made me shudder. I lowered the baseball bat slowly and decided to hide and wait for Marvin's rescue.
The noise outside the door stopped. Then, I heard the sound of approaching footsteps and the man's disdainful laughter, which was inexplicably horrifying.
He turned a deaf ear to my words and showed no fear.
The voice disappeared again. I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down, but my sleepiness had completely disappeared.
Suddenly, there was a loud bang. I realized he was banging the door with his body.
My eyes widened in horror as I watched the door shake violently. Despair filled my heart. Fortunately, the door was thick enough that the person outside couldn't break it down that soon.
If Marvin rushed here from the police station, it would probably take at least twenty minutes. I stared fixedly at the constantly shaking door and secretly prayed it wouldn't break.
But before I could even catch my breath, the next moment, I suddenly heard a gunshot.
"Fuck!" I couldn't help but curse. As expected, that person had come to silence me.
As long as he broke the lock, he could naturally break in.
There was no one else to take the bullet for me now. Thinking of this, my heart sank. What a terrible day today was!
Hearing such a loud noise outside, I suddenly thought of Maliyah. I wondered if she would run over if she heard the commotion.
Thinking of that, I immediately called Marvin.
After the call went through, I heard Marvin's voice.
"He's got a gun," I said.
"I've expected that. Hide. I'm on my way," said Marvin.
Just as I was about to call Maliyah, gunfire echoed again outside. Immediately after, I heard the crisp sound of the door lock falling.
That man finally kicked the door open. By the moonlight, I saw a man dressed in black, wearing a black mask, and holding a gun, stepping into the room slowly.
My heart skipped a beat. My mind went blank. All the blood in my body seemed to freeze. I tried hard not to make a sound as I gripped the baseball bat tightly.
