The moment he fired the first shot, my heart tightened and I rushed to the corner of the balcony without hesitation.
I was panting heavily, my heart pounding wildly in my chest, each beat feeling like a drum strike. I knew I had to buy as much time as possible and wait for a turnaround.
The man reached out and turned on the light. The strong light instantly filled the room, making my eyes hurt.
His sharp gaze immediately locked onto the open balcony door, and a cold smile flashed across his eyes.
He walked unhurriedly to the bed, moving leisurely. Then, he picked up two pillows from the bed and held the gun firmly in one hand. After that, he approached me step by step. The closer he got, the more nervous I became.
The soundproofing in this building was surprisingly good. Nobody outside noticed the two shots he fired earlier.
Who would have thought that someone would break into a house and shoot people wantonly on this seemingly peaceful night?
However, the situation would be completely different if he fired from the balcony. The sound would spread.
As he put the pillow against the muzzle of the gun and aimed it at my hiding place, ready to fire again, I took a deep breath and clenched my hands into fists, my nails almost digging into my palms.
As long as I could dodge this shot and was not fatally injured, I still had a chance to counterattack.
If he fired a second shot, the security guards patrolling downstairs would hear it. Even if the police couldn't arrive immediately, this person couldn't escape unscathed.
"Bang!" This time, the gunshot was much softer than before. I wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't been fully concentrated.
I felt a pain in my heart and a sharp pain in my right arm. A burning sensation quickly spread.
Fortunately, I was still alive. He hadn't been able to kill me with a single blow, but unfortunately, my right hand, which was holding the baseball bat, had been hit by a bullet.
"Clang!" The baseball bat in my hand fell heavily, emitting a piercing sound that stood out particularly abruptly in this silent space.
When the man heard the sound, his eyes were filled with anger and unwillingness. I didn't know if it was because he couldn't kill me directly or if he was angered by the commotion I caused.
Under the light, I saw the dagger in his hand flicker with a cold light. That cold light was like an ice-cold snake, making me shiver.
He kicked off the ground and sprinted toward me.
At this critical moment, I saw a flower pot from the corner of my eye. My mind instantly went blank. Without thinking, I quickly reached out with my left hand and threw the flower pot at the man with all my strength.
The man didn't seem to expect me to do this. A trace of panic flashed across his originally fierce eyes, and he subconsciously dodged to the side.
The moment he turned sideways, I took advantage of this fleeting opportunity, endured the pain in my right arm, and swung the baseball bat in my hand at his head with all my might.
With a dull thud, the man fell heavily to the ground. He let out a muffled sound. Then, he lay on the ground and looked at me in disbelief, as if he couldn't believe that I could easily knock him to the ground.
Looking at the blood gushing out of his head, my tense nerves instantly relaxed. The corners of my mouth unconsciously curled into a smile. I panted heavily and said, "Even if you want to kill me, you should have the ability first."
With that, I slumped to the ground as if all my muscles and bones had been sucked out of me. I gasped for breath. All my strength seemed to have been sucked out of me, and sweat soaked my back.
It took me a while to recover. My legs felt weak as I struggled to my feet, my legs still shaking.
I approached the man cautiously and kicked him gently with my foot. After making sure he was no longer moving, I finally felt relieved.
Then, there was a sudden rush of footsteps outside, and I felt nervous. I wondered if he had other accomplices. My body tensed up again, and I was ready to confront the potential danger that might come.
But then, I heard Marvin's voice.
I hurriedly opened the door and saw Marvin standing at the door with an anxious expression. Then, I heard his familiar voice. He asked anxiously, "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine," I said weakly. I felt as if I had collapsed. My voice was so hoarse that I could barely hear it myself.
Marvin's tense body instantly relaxed when he saw I was still alive. He let out a long sigh of relief and hugged me tightly. "I'm sorry I'm late."
"Ouch, that's where I'm hurt!" I winced and pushed him away in a hurry. The pain was manageable, but what bothered me more was how inappropriate our closeness felt — I was already married. If anyone saw us like this, I feared no explanation would clear up the misunderstanding.
"Are you injured?" Marvin let go of me and looked at my injured right arm with a complicated expression. Only then did he notice my wound was constantly bleeding.
Dark red blood flowed down my arm and dripped to the ground. His eyes were filled with heartache and self-blame.
"I'm fine. I didn't hurt my bones," I replied.
Marvin frowned and said firmly, "I'll take you to the hospital first."
"Have you called the police?" I asked, raising my head slightly and looking him in the eye.
Marvin nodded and looked at the unconscious man on the ground. A trace of doubt flashed in his eyes. "Who is he? Do you know him?"
I shook my head and smiled bitterly. "There should be a lot of people who want to kill me. Maybe at least five."
There was a hint of helplessness and self-mockery in my tone. After experiencing so much danger, I was already a little numb.
Marvin was about to speak when the door opposite suddenly opened.
Maliyah rubbed her sleepy eyes. Then, she looked at us with a puzzled expression. "What happened? Why is it so noisy?" Her voice was full of thick sleepiness and confusion.
Marvin and I looked at each other, not knowing how to answer.
"It's not safe here. I'll get someone to arrange a place for you to stay. I'll send the police to protect you around the clock," Marvin said solemnly as he took out his phone.
I frowned slightly and said softly, "There's no need to make such a big fuss."
I didn't want to cause too much trouble for others because of me.
When Maliyah saw my injured arm and the man lying on the ground with blood all over his head, her face turned pale from fright. Her eyes widened, and her voice trembled. She seemed frightened by the scene in front of her. "Laurel, what's going on?"
She instantly seemed to realize something and hurriedly said, "Laurel, you should listen to Marvin ."
"I'm worried if you're alone at home," I said.
"I can stay at my colleague's house for a while," Maliyah hurriedly said.
Now that they insisted, and I was exhausted after everything I'd been through tonight, I agreed.
