In the long corridor of the hospital, I lay on the hospital bed. The pain from the wound surged in waves, with every breath pulling at my nerves throughout my body.
Maliyah sat by the bed with red eyes. She tightly held my hand and occasionally wiped away the tears at the corners of her eyes with a tissue.
Marvin stood at the side with a frown. His eyes revealed anger and worry. He glanced toward the door once in a while as if waiting for news.
"Any word from the police?" I asked weakly, my voice so hoarse I could barely hear myself.
Marvin bent down slightly and leaned close to me. He said softly, "Don't be anxious. The police are already doing their best to investigate. They interrogated the suspect overnight and confirmed that someone hired him to kill you. However, as for the mastermind, they're still investigating."
His voice was as soft as possible, for fear of scaring me, but I could still hear the weariness and anxiety in it.
It wasn't long before the police came to the hospital again to update us on the progress of the investigation.
The leading police officer looked serious. He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and said, "According to the clues we have so far, they might think that you have some key evidence against them, so they attacked you."
I looked confused, trying to search my mind for possible clues, but my thoughts were a mess, and I couldn't make sense of them.
So, I said, "I really can't think of anything I have that could threaten them."
Marvin patted my shoulder gently and comforted me. "It's alright. Since they think so, we'll beat them at their own game and lure out the real murderer." There was a flicker of determination in his eyes as if he already had a plan.
Under Marvin's arrangements, I moved into a safe house.
The house was in a quiet neighborhood, surrounded by green trees and a serene environment, but my mood remained unsettled.
The sunlight from the window spilled onto the floor through the gaps in the curtains, forming golden streaks. I sat at the window and stared out, lost in thought.
"Do you think we'll succeed?" I turned to Marvin, who was setting up surveillance equipment. I felt a little apprehensive.
Marvin stopped what he was doing and walked to my side. Then, he put his hands on my shoulders and looked into my eyes seriously. "Believe me, we can do it. As long as we're careful, we can find the mastermind."
In less than three days, the police had obtained favorable evidence.
At the same time, I received an unknown call. The other party only said, "If you want Alex to live, come to the abandoned factory alone."
I hung up the phone with a solemn expression. "Alex has been kidnapped."
Marvin was slightly stunned. Then, he made a phone call and finally confirmed that Alex was missing.
"I'm going to save him," I said.
"I'll go with you," Marvin replied.
I shook my head helplessly. "They want me to go alone. But don't worry, we're about to know the answer. Besides, this was originally part of our plan."
Marvin nodded helplessly.
Soon, I arrived alone at the abandoned factory. The place smelled stale. The walls were covered in moss, and the remains of machines lay scattered across the floor.
"Come out. I'm here," I shouted. My voice echoed through the empty factory.
Suddenly, there was the sound of footsteps and a group of people emerged from the darkness.
In the lead was a woman. She was tall and had an icy gaze. It was Leah.
"You didn't expect it to be me, did you?" Leah's lips curled into a cold smile, her eyes filled with mockery.
"Leah, why are you doing this?" I asked angrily.
Leah gave me a disdainful look. Then, she snorted. "You know too much. The clues in your hands are enough to destroy everything I have."
"I have no idea what you're talking about." I looked puzzled, and my heart was filled with confusion.
Leah sneered. "Don't you already know? Why are you still pretending?"
I frowned slightly and thought for a moment before realizing something. I had hacked into her computer before, and the important evidence was in it.
Suddenly, I remembered the traditional medicine shop that Harold had bought at auction.
No wonder the name sounded familiar. It was the pharmaceutical company that Leah had bought.
"You mean selling organs, smuggling drugs, and experimenting with human bodies?" I frowned and asked coldly.
"Looks like you know quite a lot. Unfortunately, today is the day you die," Leah said as she took out a gun from her waist and aimed it at me.
At this moment, a familiar voice sounded. "Leah, stop!" Alex slowly approached from another direction in his wheelchair.
When Leah saw Alex, she looked disgusted. "Why are you here? As a piece of trash, do you still want to save a damsel in distress? Since you want to die, I'll fulfill your wish."
Alex ignored Leah's humiliation. "Leah, stop. You've already made enough mistakes."
Leah laughed crazily. "Stop? Why should I stop? I'm only paying for their organs. It's just a reasonable transaction. What's wrong with that? If there's anything wrong, it's your mother's fault. It's been so many years, but she still meddled in other people's business."
With that, she took out a gun from her waist and aimed it at my head.
At this critical moment, Alex stood up from the wheelchair and rushed toward Leah at breakneck speed, snatching the gun from her hand.
Everyone was stunned, including me and Leah.
Leah's face was filled with disbelief. She looked at Alex as if she was looking at a stranger. "How... how could you stand up?"
"I gave you a chance, but you didn't cherish it." Alex held the gun, his eyes filled with pain and helplessness.
"Why are you still standing there? Kill them both!" Leah roared.
However, the people standing beside her did not move at all.
"Do you think they will still help you?" Alex stared at Leah with his cold eyes.
"You... You bribed these people?" Leah sneered and collapsed to the ground.
After a while, she finally stood up and walked out of the door alone.
We chased after her. But Leah ran to the beach and jumped down without hesitation.
The sea instantly submerged her, leaving only ripples.
Alex held my hand tightly as if he was worried I would disappear in the next second. His eyes were filled with self-reproach and guilt. "I'm sorry to have worried you."
I shook my head gently. 'I don't blame you. It wasn't your fault.'
At the same time, Herrera Group announced the heir, and the police also banned Leah's pharmaceutical company.
The sunshine was bright outside the window, and a gentle breeze fluttered the curtains, bringing a hint of fresh air.
This nightmare was finally over, and Alex and I also ushered in a new chapter in our lives.
Three months later, I found out that I was pregnant. I named my daughter Norene.
"What if it's a son?" Alex asked.
"I won't change this name," I said. "Otherwise, I'll get someone else to replace you."
Alex said, "No, you can't do that. Alright then. Her name will be Norene Herrera."
Marvin, who was standing at the side, glanced sideways at Alex. "Can your character change more drastically?"
Alex rolled his eyes at Marvin. "My character has always been a devoted husband who loves his wife."
With that, Alex reached out and held my arm tightly. He carefully helped me out of the hospital, and we embarked on a new journey.
