Seeing that I remained silent, Austin's anger flared even brighter, his eyes full of contempt and mockery as he sneered, "Laurel, I'd advise you to stop daydreaming here. If I don't want you, who else would?"
Before I could lash out at this scumbag in front of me, I saw him suddenly retract his hand.
Turning my head, I spotted a woman standing at the doorway, wearing a striking red dress. For a moment, I couldn't find the right words to describe her—her eyes were like beautiful pieces of glass, not more than twenty-five years old.
Her face was delicate, with a hairstyle pulled up into an elegant bun, secured by a wooden hairpin. She wasn't just beautiful; her presence was commanding.
Her figure was flawless, enough to make anyone gasp. With a figure like hers, if she were second in a beauty pageant, no one would dare claim the first place.
"Austin, it's been a long time."
The beautiful woman smiled at Austin, and her voice, both soft and sultry, carried the unmistakable tone of a confident, sophisticated woman.
Even as a woman myself, I couldn't help but stare at her for a moment—her beauty was that captivating. And if I couldn't look away, I could only imagine what the men around us were thinking.
A dull ache started in my head, and I realized I had made a mistake. I shouldn't have made that bet so easily. I had overestimated myself—more accurately, I had underestimated her.
There was no doubt about it. Whoever could dress like that and arrive so late could only be Alex's ex-girlfriend.
As the woman's gaze flickered across me, I saw a brief flash of something strange in her eyes, but it was gone in an instant.
Austin, eager to please, rushed over to her side, his lips curving into a warm smile. "Samantha, you've finally come back from abroad?"
The woman gave him a sharp glance before lowering her eyes, her gaze oozing a kind of irresistible allure.
Even when angry, a beauty like her could still stun you.
Austin completely ignored me and led the beautiful woman into the banquet hall.
But as she passed by me, the woman nodded slightly in my direction.
It was rare to see someone so effortlessly graceful and kind, even to a stranger.
I had to admit, Alex, that sly fox, did have good taste in women.
Of course, I wasn't bad myself, but compared to her? There was no comparison. Why humiliate myself?
I drained the rest of my drink in one go and watched a server walk by with a tray of drinks. Without hesitation, I asked for half a bottle of wine.
I'd rather raise my glass to the moon than go back inside and add more frustration to my already troubled mind.
For a moment, the urge to run away overwhelmed me. But the driver was Alex's man, so there was no chance he'd take me back.
Sighing heavily, I had barely finished the second glass when Angela appeared beside me, her high heels clicking against the floor. "What... what are you doing? You were invited to the banquet, not to sit here and drink alone," she said, looking at me with concern.
"Go ahead, don't worry about me." I smiled and waved her off, my voice laced with self-deprecation. "At a fancy banquet like this, one more or less person doesn't matter."
"No, I'm just a bit worried," I frowned, my expression sagging. I leaned on Angela's shoulder and said, "Did you see that woman in the red dress? How can anyone be so beautiful?"
"Uh-oh, Laurel, are you feeling threatened?" Angela's tone was teasing as she gently patted my head. "So what if Samantha's pretty? There are plenty of beautiful women in the world, not just her."
"Samantha Harvey? The Harvey family's daughter?"
There were four major families in Nifelheim City, and the Harvey family was one of them.
I had suspected the woman's identity wasn't simple, but I hadn't expected her to be from the Harvey family.
And not just any branch—the Harvey family, second in rank among the city's top families.
Social status was like a pyramid; even in high society, there were layers.
Those with millions couldn't even dream of playing in the same league as those with tens of millions or billions.
That was the reality of class.
That was why our ancestors were right about one thing: "marrying within your own class" really does matter.
After all, some people work all year to earn what the rich second-generation spends in one night.
The Harvey family had built their wealth in construction, later branching out into jewelry and luxury goods.
They were a centuries-old powerhouse, growing stronger with each generation.
While the Adams family had a foothold in Nifelheim, they were nowhere near the Harvey family's level.
Angela had once said that her parents were only playing with the scraps the Harvey family had left behind. The true power still lay with the Harvey family.
But what surprised me even more was the ethereal aura Samantha exuded. Despite being a daughter of a wealthy family, she carried herself with the air of someone deeply cultured, like a scholar.
"She dresses so simply... I didn't expect her to be from the Harvey family." I paused for a moment before suddenly looking up at Angela. "That hairpin she's wearing—it's made from agarwood, and there are gemstones embedded in it, right?"
"Laurel, you're so sharp." Angela whispered, impressed.
No wonder when Samantha passed by me, I caught a faint scent of flowers mixed with a refreshing fragrance.
I glanced at Angela, my curiosity getting the best of me. "Did you already know Alex's ex-girlfriend was Samantha?"
Angela hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "I only found out on the way here today."
"Then why did you bet with Kailyn? You should have stopped me when I was about to raise the stakes," I groaned, clutching my chest. "That was 1.5 million dollars!"
"Laurel, how can you let others feel good while putting yourself down?" Angela tilted her head, looking at me in mild disbelief, before reaching up and lightly pinching my cheek. "You're a beauty too, just a cool and reserved one."
I swatted her hand away, a sad expression on my face. "If I lose, I'll just avoid you."
"Don't worry, we'll win. No one's going to lose. We'll get Alex to admit everything. Today's a perfect opportunity! Let's go all in, take the risk—turn the bicycle into a motorcycle?"
Angela grew more excited as she spoke, and I froze with my wine glass raised, my hand rushing to cover her mouth—but it was too late.
When she saw the shock on my face, Angela bit her lip and suddenly placed a hand on her stomach. "Laurel, my stomach doesn't feel well... I'll be back soon."
Before I could react, she was already running off in a hurry.
Was she going to the bathroom with my drink?
"You're not getting drunk here." Alex's voice cut through the air, his expression calm but filled with an undeniable edge.
"Angela was just joking." I quickly tried to explain. I might have the intention, but not the guts to follow through.
Alex raised an eyebrow, his eyes narrowing dangerously as he studied me.
My grip on the wine glass tightened, feeling my heart skip with every step he took closer.
