When Kailyn heard the sarcastic tone in my voice, her eyebrows furrowed. It seemed she recalled some unpleasant memories, and a flash of disdain crossed her eyes.
But I remained unfazed, my expression indifferent. I knew that as long as I didn't let their mockery and contempt bother me, it couldn't hurt me.
After all, someone who'd crawled out of the mud wasn't likely to fold so easily.
"You should know your place. Just because you've latched onto a rich ex-boyfriend and a wealthy best friend doesn't mean you'll suddenly become a princess."
"She's wearing a bracelet that looks pretty expensive."
"I bet it's a fake."
"It couldn't be. After all, her ex is the young master of the Herrera family."
"You're joking, right? It's got to be worth at least eight figures."
The murmurs of the group around me didn't affect me much, except when I heard "eight figures"—my heart fluttered.
I quietly extended my hand and mentally counted—eight figures?
Did Alex really just give away something worth tens of millions so casually?
As the whispers continued, I heard a soft voice reach my ears.
"Her bracelet is real."
I slowly looked up and found Samantha sitting beside Kailyn, a look of mild surprise crossing my face.
At that moment, Kailyn, seeing Samantha, froze for a beat before flashing a sweet, obedient smile. "Samantha, looks like Alex hasn't started yet. Were you the one he was waiting for?"
"Sorry for keeping everyone waiting."
Samantha, effortlessly drawing everyone's attention with her graceful demeanor, returned to the center of the room.
I couldn't help but notice the brief flicker of envy, jealousy, and frustration that flashed in Kailyn's eyes.
Perhaps she realized she shouldn't have said those words in front of everyone. But even if she hadn't, with Samantha's looks and charm, it would have been no easy feat to snatch Alex away from her.
Kailyn quickly suppressed her smile, her eyes now full of provocation as she turned her gaze to me, her lips curling into a mocking smile. She seemed to think this bet was one I'd inevitably lose.
I squinted slightly, my gaze returning to Samantha.
To my surprise, her eyes were focused on the bracelet on my right wrist.
I paused. Could she recognize it?
If she really was Alex's firs love, she must have seen this bracelet before.
This was bad. If she knew this bracelet, it meant she had met his mother.
Was that the plan all along? To stir up trouble with Samantha? Or something else?
The last thing I needed was to make an enemy of someone from the Harvey family after already clashing with Austin's people. Was Alex setting me up to be cornered?
"Miss Harvey, I heard you and Mr. Herrera have an exceptional relationship. Seems like it's true."
"You don't even need to ask," came the reply. "Mr. Herrera waited for Miss Harvey to arrive before starting dinner. Besides, there have never been any rumors about Mr. Herrera for years. Clearly, he's been waiting for someone—and that someone is Miss Harvey."
"Not necessarily," Angela suddenly piped up.
I quickly kicked her foot under the table, afraid she was about to cause more trouble.
Angela cleared her throat and turned toward Samantha with a smile. "Miss Harvey, are you really Mr. Herrera's ex?"
I tugged at Angela's skirt, but she didn't budge.
Samantha's beautiful face lit up with a brilliant smile. "Why don't we drop the 'ex' part?"
At her words, the expressions of the young women around the table changed to one of surprise.
I couldn't help but sneer inside. It seemed that, aside from Angela and me, the other socialites here were all eyeing Alex with ulterior motives.
Well, of course. With his looks and status, it was no wonder women would fall all over him. Not to mention, with his family background, all the major families were eager to ally with the Herreras.
A union between two powerful families would maximize their resources, possibly even boosting stock prices.
At this moment, everything clicked.
No wonder Alex was so eager to marry. There were too many people vying for his "piece of cake."
And I... well, I must have been his most familiar option—someone he could easily control, someone whose background he knew inside and out.
The most important thing? A pawn like me could be discarded without a second thought once I had served my purpose.
But what I didn't understand was why he would openly tell me he was born out of wedlock. Didn't he fear I might use that against him?
Samantha smiled and said softly, "I'm just joking. Don't be upset."
With her stunning beauty and unique status, even if the young women here wanted to be angry, they could only suppress their fury.
But I couldn't help but think differently of Samantha. She appeared delicate and demure, but I could tell she was a force to be reckoned with.
By making a joke of it, she had cleverly planted seeds of doubt in everyone's mind, drawing the answers she wanted from their faces.
"Of course not," Kailyn said with a look of understanding. "Samantha and Mr. Herrera are good friends, and their parents are close, so she must know a lot about him."
Kailyn's seemingly complimentary words were, in reality, an attempt to steer the conversation away from the topic.
Even if Samantha were truly Alex's girlfriend, it didn't matter—he had never officially acknowledged their relationship, so for everyone else, they were simply good friends.
Samantha glanced at Kailyn beside her, her face a picture of serenity, not a hint of emotion stirring. Still, she maintained her gentle, almost otherworldly calm.
"We keep in touch. When we were together, I learned a little secret," Samantha lowered her voice and said. "Alex has been secretly in love with someone for years."
"Secretly in love with someone?" Kailyn furrowed her brow, confused. "You mean someone who's always been around him?"
Samantha paused, as if thinking for a moment. Then, almost to herself, she murmured, "But he never really likes to interact with other girls..."
Just then, my phone buzzed. I pulled it out of my bag and saw a message from Angela.
[The meal hasn't even started, and I'm already full. Full of disgust.]
I bit my lip and glanced at Angela, taken aback. I quickly replied. [idn't expect you to catch that subtle hint.]
Angela: [Subtle? She's treating us like idiots! If it weren't for you asking me to keep it quiet, I'd expose her right now.]
I replied: [She's a seasoned player. Even your skills can't handle this kind of little devil.]
