I didn't remember exactly when I started to realize that life, from the moment we're born, is already divided into levels: the upper class, the middle class, and the lower class.
I vaguely remember one sweltering summer day, when I was shoved off a bus by the crowd behind me, my backpack almost crushing my shoulders, sweat pouring down my face. I almost fell, but luckily there was someone in front of me who steadied me, only to curse at me.
I wasn't angry, though. Even though the words were harsh, my mother always said to respect the elderly and be kind to the young.
The bus stop was still over three thousand feet from my school, so I had to walk the rest of the way.
When I reached the school gate, I saw a long white car parked outside. A little girl in a princess dress stepped out, looking incredibly beautiful.
Years later, I learned that the car was a customized, extended Rolls-Royce.
And the girl who stepped out was none other than Samantha, who now stood in front of me.
At that time, Samantha and I didn't attend the same school, but our schools were not far apart. Mine was a private bilingual school, and the only two ways to get in were either through money or grades.
I used to naïvely believe that if I worked hard enough, I could be as beautiful and smart as Samantha.
But later, I realized that some gaps are so wide that you could spend your whole life trying and still never reach the starting point, let alone the finish line.
The phrase "hard work will change your life" only applies to your own current situation, never to someone else's life.
I understood this earlier than most of my peers, but for me, it was still a little too late.
I looked at Samantha, sitting elegantly on the couch, her beauty and confidence shining through. She had clearly grown up surrounded by wealth and luxury, and it showed in the way she carried herself — poised, graceful, and distinctly aristocratic.
Her every gesture seemed like something from a photo shoot.
After a few moments of sizing me up, Samantha furrowed her brows, lowered her voice, and said, "Next week, Alex and I will announce our engagement."
I didn't flinch, keeping my tone calm as I replied, "You should be telling Alex or the gossip reporters, not me."
Samantha's face instantly darkened, her arms crossed as she spoke softly but venomously, "Aren't you angry?"
I paused, then smirked, "Angry? Angry because Alex didn't save me immediately after I fell into the water? Why would I be angry? After all, you're the daughter of the Harvey family. If something happened to you, wouldn't I be the one to suffer?"
Her eyes widened, and a cold smile crept onto her lips. "You don't seriously think Alex saved me just to help you, do you? You're shameless, a woman who takes from both sides. I've seen women who are deceitful and scandalous, but you? You're the first to take it all."
At her words, my brows furrowed slightly. When I looked up at Samantha, I felt that dazzling aura around her suddenly dim.
It was only when you truly hate someone that you can make them seem so repulsive. And love? Love could do the same.
I let out a quiet laugh. "I didn't expect Miss Harvey to hold me in such high regard. I'm flattered."
"You and Austin were together for six years. You break up and then immediately go after Alex? You really have no shame," Samantha said, her voice sharp with anger.
I sighed, rolling my eyes. "Actually, it wasn't me who went after Alex. He came after me."
Samantha's face turned red with fury, her hands clenching into fists as she stood up from the couch. Her expression was a mix of rage and disbelief.
"Miss Harvey, if you want me to leave your future fiancé, that's not impossible. Just give me enough money, and I'll leave right now."
I smiled, tilting my head back slightly, and looked at her with amusement.
She thought that by pushing me into the water, she'd make me realize my position in Alex's heart and give up. What she didn't expect was that not only did I not back down, I didn't care about the gossip or what others said.
Samantha sneered, "So, how much do you want?"
I raised an eyebrow and grinned, "Well, that depends. How much is Alex worth to you in your heart?"
Without missing a beat, Samantha pulled out a check from her bag and handed it to me.
I took the check without hesitation, glanced at the amount written on it.
Four million dollars?
I raised an eyebrow and said, "Miss Harvey, did you forget to add an extra zero at the end?"
Samantha's face showed disbelief. "You mean to tell me Alex is only worth four million dollars to you?"
Samantha's gaze shifted, her distaste evident as she raised her voice slightly, "It's not about Alex. It's about what you're worth to me."
"Well, in that case, I'll let you have your money back, Miss Harvey," I said lazily, leaning back against the sofa. "I'm really tired. I didn't sleep last night, and today I fell into the water. Honestly, I'm exhausted. Why don't you go home and think it over? Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere."
Samantha stared at my face for a long time, then finally forced out a graceful smile. "So, you're with Alex because you want his money?"
"Yes," I smiled slightly, then added, "And I also want his looks... and his body."
Samantha's voice trembled with rage, "You really have no shame."
I bit my lip, but the smile never left my face.
When Samantha finally left and closed the door behind her, the smile faded from my face. I sighed heavily.
I poured myself a glass of water to soothe my throat.
When I saw the four million dollars left on the table, I couldn't help but chuckle.
Now I understood why Alex was willing to give me 1.5 million dollars in pocket money every year. After all, not everyone can resist the temptation of four million.
It wasn't that I was trying to make excuses to get rid of Samantha; I was genuinely sore all over from the stress of the day.
After finishing my water, I sent Angela a message to let her know I was fine, so she wouldn't think that Samantha had done anything to me.
I drew the curtains, climbed into bed, and buried myself under the covers.
The room was quiet, and before I knew it, I had fallen asleep.
It was the first time in my life that I was able to fall asleep so quickly.
Two hours later, I was woken by my phone vibrating. Looking at the time, I realized I'd slept for a full two hours.
Angela had sent me several messages, and there were a few from the class group too.
I wasn't in the mood to open them, knowing that they probably had something to do with Juliet.
Just as I was about to open Angela's message, I heard a knock at the door.
I opened it to find Alex standing there, his face stormy and his once-beautiful features twisted with anger.
