My breathing had calmed down quite a bit. In fact, I knew I didn't have to worry too much—after all, Angela was just momentarily swept up in the thrill of it all.
Men like Isaac had an undeniable charm, and it wasn't just his looks—it was his innate aura. An angel's face with a devil's heart.
Over the years, I'd kept a quiet eye on what was happening in Wadiff City. A month ago, an employee from the Srento Group was investigated for corruption and bribery, and later that evening, he jumped to his death after leaving a suicide note.
I expected this news to send the Srento Group's stock price plummeting, but to my surprise, the opposite happened.
The company's PR team immediately held a press conference, where the deceased's wife, in front of countless cameras, publicly apologized to the Srento Group.
Isaac, representing the company, not only forgave the wife, but he also ensured she received the man's salary and a compensation package.
Such a generous and forgiving company naturally garnered the support and approval of many investors. Especially after Isaac's statement during an interview, where he said "The deceased comes first," causing the widow to break down in tears.
He even promised that part of the company's earnings would go toward a charity fund to help working-class families whose children were suffering from illnesses.
What was meant to be a crisis, Isaac turned into an opportunity, saving the Srento Group's reputation and giving them a free advertisement. Of course, his true reason for starting the charity wasn't solely for sick children—it was part of his grand plan to acquire a number of struggling pharmaceutical companies.
Thinking about the Srento Group entering the medical field didn't fill me with joy—it made me uneasy. After all, sometimes the difference between saving lives and taking them is just a single thought.
"Angela, Isaac isn't right for you," I said, my tone serious. "He could take your heart, and you'd still think he's a good guy."
Angela raised an eyebrow. "He already took my heart."
"What if he takes your liver, your kidneys, and your lungs too? Would you still not care?"
Angela slapped my hand lightly. "Laurel, he saved you today! How can you still think he's a bad guy?"
I sighed. "I'm just saying, always be cautious. Never trust without reason."
Angela squinted at me, her eyes narrowing in suspicion. "Do you have a grudge against him?"
"If I did, why would he have saved me?" I smiled faintly, unbothered. "Businessmen don't make moves without a reason. The most successful ones aren't exactly saints. And I'm sure he's got his own motives for saving me."
Angela was momentarily at a loss for words, then finally slapped my shoulder with a dramatic sigh.
"Motive? Laurel, how can you say that about my idol? He's just a good guy who wanted to help, and you're turning him into some kind of villain."
Seeing Angela so defensive, I shrugged. "How about we make a bet? Let's see if he comes looking for me."
"Looking for you? Why would he come find you?"
"To repay me, of course. After all, he saved me."
Angela laughed scornfully. "You're overthinking it. He just helped you out of kindness, no need for any grand gesture."
"Business doesn't work that way. There's no such thing as a 'selfless' businessman."
I sighed again, remembering how, years ago, I thought my encounter with Isaac was just a casual, fateful meeting. But in reality, I was nothing but bait in the net he cast.
I'd only discovered the truth by stumbling across clues in his social media photos. That lecture he gave at my university? It was all part of his plan. And he even put a picture of me in his album. Anyone who didn't know us would think we were close.
The next time we met, Isaac had already recognized me. After all, his appearance at that lecture had been all about Austin.
But what puzzled me was this: if Isaac and Alex knew each other, then surely Isaac should know Austin too. If he wanted to find him, why did he have to get involved with me?
For a moment, I even wondered if Isaac already knew who I really was. But when he pulled me out of the water and looked at me, his expression made it clear—he had no idea.
No man would be sick enough to try seducing his sister, right?
Of course, my suspicion wasn't without evidence.
When I fell into the water, the rescue team should've been the first to respond. But they didn't. Someone had stopped them.
There were plenty of people around, but most of them were just waiting to watch a show.
A small group wanted to help but were too afraid to step in. No one wanted to make an enemy of Samantha because of someone as insignificant as me.
But the rescue workers were different. If anything went wrong, they'd face penalties and possibly even liability. So someone must've been sure that I'd be rescued soon before they gave up on me.
What I didn't expect was that the person who saved me would be Isaac.
I couldn't help but wonder—what did I have that was so worth Isaac going through all this trouble to get close to me?
"Alright, it's a bet. But I still don't believe Isaac is anything like what you say," Angela said confidently.
I nodded. "If you lose, you stay away from him."
"And if you lose," she said with a mischievous glint in her eye, "you have to flirt with Mr. Herrera in front of Samantha."
I raised an eyebrow. "Alex already left."
"Are you worried he won't come back?" Angela teased, raising an eyebrow. "Because it sounds like you miss him a little."
Before I could deny it, Angela's phone suddenly rang.
She glanced at the screen and her expression darkened. She hesitated for a moment before pressing the speakerphone button.
On the other end, Samantha's soft voice came through. "Miss Adams, we're upstairs in the private room. Come join us for some fun."
Angela hesitated. "I'm good, you guys enjoy yourselves. I'm busy."
"Are you with Miss Parks? Why don't you bring her along? The more, the merrier."
Angela glanced at me.
I quickly shook my head. I wasn't interested in joining them.
Just then, there was a loud noise on the other end of the call.
Before either of us could react, Samantha's phone call was abruptly disconnected.
"What's going on?" I asked, shrugging.
Angela furrowed her brow. "Fighting over a man? Did the women get into a fight?"
Before I could reply, my phone buzzed, a strange number flashing on the screen.
"Who's this?" Angela leaned in to see.
A smug smile curled at the corners of my lips. "Isaac's calling me."
