As I struggled to carry my heavy body toward my room, the door to a nearby room suddenly opened.
"Laurel... what happened to you?" Juliet looked me over from head to toe. Her voice had a hint of panic, but her expression quickly flashed with a touch of schadenfreude.
She stepped closer, offering me her arm with a feigned concern. "Are you feeling unwell? Let me take you back to your room."
When Juliet got close, her face suddenly changed, and she sneered. "Laurel, did someone drug you? Or should I find you a man? Though, it's a bit hard to find one in broad daylight, isn't it?"
I lifted my head and stared at Juliet, ignoring her mockery. "Did you drug me?"
"Of course not," Juliet replied with a low, sulking tone. "If I had, would I only drug you?"
She paused for a moment, then excitement flashed in her eyes. "But don't worry, I'll make sure to get you back to your room safely. And when we're there, I'll pick out a few men with nice physiques for you."
I stared at her with a blank expression. I knew it wasn't Juliet—she always worked from the shadows, playing her little games. She was hardly the type to bribe a waiter to slip something into my drink. But I couldn't be sure she wouldn't do something worse to me.
What I was curious about, though, was who would go so far as to drug me, and what their goal was. It couldn't be anything good.
I turned my gaze back to Juliet, locking eyes with her, my curiosity visible on my face. "I'm just a little warm. Why would you think I've been drugged?"
Juliet blinked, momentarily stunned. But in less than three seconds, her lips curled into a sly grin. "Is that so? Well, if you're feeling sick, I'll take you back to your room. We can get a doctor to check on you."
My face darkened, and I pushed her away with force.
She staggered back a few steps, her eyes flashing with anger. "Laurel, I was just trying to help, and you push me away like that?"
I didn't bother answering her. I turned to head for my room, but my legs felt like they were made of lead. Every step was a struggle.
Juliet quickly caught up with me, her expression unchanged. "Let me walk you back to your room."
I bit my lip, glaring at her. "No need."
But Juliet was relentless. She reached out to grab my arm, just as a hotel attendant, freshly finished cleaning a room, walked out.
Juliet's eyes showed a brief flash of panic, and she quickly glared at me, huffing, "Forget it. If you can't appreciate kindness..."
She turned on her heel and walked away.
The moment I heard the door slam behind her, I let out a quiet sigh of relief.
"Miss, are you feeling alright?" The hotel attendant asked cautiously, walking up to me.
I nodded weakly and spoke in a low voice. "Please take me back to my room."
The attendant gently hooked her arm around mine, and I instinctively glanced up at her. A faint smile tugged at her lips, and I realized her delicate, pretty face seemed vaguely familiar.
But I didn't have time to think about it—everything went dark, and I collapsed into unconsciousness.
When I opened my eyes again, I found myself bound. Several beautiful women stood before me, their eyes burning with intense hatred, as if they wanted to tear me apart.
I looked around. This wasn't my room.
I remained silent, simply staring at them, trying to make sense of the situation. I hadn't realized there were so many people involved in poisoning me. It seemed like I had become a thorn in their side, a nuisance they couldn't tolerate.
But I hadn't wronged any of them.
"Laurel, right?"
I forced a faint smile but didn't respond.
My body still felt weak, but it was better than before. Perhaps because of the cold I had, the drug didn't seem to have the effect they were hoping for.
Otherwise, I wouldn't be seeing the look of shock and disbelief in their eyes.
"Abigail, how did she wake up?" Sophia's voice quivered with fear.
Abigail scoffed, curling her lips into a contemptuous grin. "So what if she's awake? You think she can do anything to us?"
"Isn't this going a bit too far? After all, she's Mr. Herrera's woman." One of the women standing next to Abigail raised an eyebrow, her concern evident. "If Mr. Herrera finds out..."
"Find out what? What can he do?" Abigail suddenly sneered. "Do you think Mr. Herrera would care about such a cheap thing like her?"
"Exactly, are we really scared of a woman with no status or standing? We're just having a little fun with her. She had the nerve to seduce Mr. Herrera and steal Miss Harvey's fiancé, so she should know there would be consequences."
At their words, I couldn't help but laugh.
It seemed like Samantha isn't keeping just Abigail on her leash...
"What are you laughing at?" Abigail glared at me, storming up to me. She slapped me hard across the face.
The pain brought me back to my senses.
She crouched down in front of me, gripping my chin tightly. Her tone dripped with mockery as she said, "Laurel, do you think Mr. Herrera would still want you if he knew you were here, sneaking around with other men?"
I looked at Abigail calmly, meeting her gaze without flinching. "I suggest you let me go now, or I won't let this go."
Abigail didn't seem to care. Instead, she smirked arrogantly.
"Laurel, you don't really think Mr. Herrera will come to save you, do you?"
She slapped me again, a gleam of satisfaction in her eyes. "I hate seductresses, especially cheap women like you."
Standing up, she rubbed her palm with a cruel smile. "Don't worry, I've arranged three men for you. Each one more ruthless than the last. You'll be begging for mercy."
"Is it Samantha who gave you the courage?"
At the mention of Samantha's name, Abigail's face darkened. "Laurel, you filthy bitch, you don't deserve to speak their names. After today, neither Mr. Herrera nor Samantha will even remember you existed."
She smiled again, the smile cold and ominous.
But I remained unfazed, my face calm as I locked eyes with her. "Abigail, are you sure no one will come to save me?"
Abigail froze for a moment, but her smile quickly returned, more sinister than ever. "Mr. Herrera is with Samantha, and as for your precious best friend, I wouldn't be surprised if she's in a situation just as bad as yours right now."
