"Are you angry?" Alex glanced at me with a casual expression, then lowered his gaze again, carefully switching hands to tend to my wound.
I had to admit, I'm not usually the type to be swayed by good looks or driven by passion.
So, it must've been the effects of the medicine that made me feel a strange flutter every time I looked at this man.
But when I heard Alex's confirmation, I instinctively wanted to pull my hand back. He's angry, and still wants to take care of my wound? There's no audience here, so who's he putting on this show for?
"Don't move, just a little longer. It'll be over soon." Alex said, softly blowing on my injury.
Every motion, every glance from him was so tender that it was easy to get lost in it.
I almost wanted to ask him if I should hire someone to take photos of this warm moment. But then I thought better of it—I didn't want to get bombarded with rotten eggs when I walked out.
After finishing with the medicine, Alex wrapped a black bandage around my wound.
I looked at the bandage around my wrist, a bit confused, and asked, "Is this a medical one?"
Alex glanced at me lazily, his tone dismissive. "What else would it be?"
Then he smiled and added, "This black bandage is for treating stubborn, long-healing wounds."
I nodded, still puzzled. The hotel's medical supplies wouldn't have something like this, so I guessed that Alex must've carried it with him.
But I couldn't understand—he's the president of the Herrera Group. Who would dare to hurt him? Who would have the guts?
Even though I was puzzled, I knew if Alex didn't want to talk about something, no amount of questioning would get him to open up.
Besides, I didn't want to know too much about his secrets.
Alex slipped a set of black jewelry onto my wrist, then furrowed his brows. "Why aren't you wearing the bracelet?"
"I'm better off not wearing it. I'd never be able to afford replacing it if it broke."
"Don't you worry it'll get lost at Angela's place?"
I paused, surprised by his words. Could it be that Alex had someone watching me all this time?
"Of course not. It's locked in the safe in her car. Or should I give it back to you? I don't feel safe having it here."
I was honest. I didn't want to risk my life over a bracelet.
"If you wear that bracelet, no one will dare bother you." Alex seemed to ponder it for a moment, then his lips curled up slightly. "After your wound heals, wear the bracelet. Don't make me tell you a third time."
His smile was light, but his voice sent a chill down my spine.
I nodded in confusion, still not quite sure what he meant.
But maybe he was right—if those wealthy young ladies saw Alex giving me such an expensive gift, they would likely stop looking down on me.
"Laurel, if anything happens, you can always come to me," Alex's clear eyes met mine, and for a moment, I almost believed him.
I smiled lightly, nodding. "Sure."
It was all just a game, right? Everyone knew how to put on a show. But when I looked at his mesmerizing face, I couldn't help but feel a strange sense of fear.
"Let's go."
I glanced at the time—it was still early for the dinner. But seeing the unyielding look on Alex's face, I could only follow silently as he led me out of the room.
I didn't expect that he would take me back to the same hotel restaurant we had lunch at.
And to my surprise, the entire restaurant was empty.
It seemed like Alex had shut down the whole place.
"You know who did it?" I asked, curious.
Alex didn't answer. Instead, he glanced over at the restaurant staff lined up.
"These are all the employees working today. Do you remember who poured you the water?" Alex spoke slowly, pulling out a chair for me to sit down.
I hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
But I still couldn't understand what he was trying to do. Was he trying to uncover the person behind it? Even if we found out who poisoned me, it wouldn't matter.
The blame would just be pushed onto Abigail, and everyone knew who she was aligned with.
The few rich girls present were just accomplices, at most acting as shields.
One by one, the waitstaff passed by, but I didn't see the one who had served me water.
"Is everyone who worked today here?" The restaurant manager approached respectfully, saying, "Miss Parks, they're all here."
I pondered for a moment, then noticed a waiter in the front row. I smirked.
It seemed someone had already taken the person away.
"They're already gone," I said, looking at the manager with a calm expression.
"Miss Parks, are you sure? All the staff are here, one doesn't miss." The manager was a man in his forties, with a serious and upright demeanor.
If he were really that kind of person, he would never be in this position.
"Well, maybe I made a mistake. Was it you who poured me the water?" I asked casually.
At that moment, several waiters looked surprised, and one hurried to explain, "Miss Parks, our manager doesn't usually serve customers in the front."
"But I saw him wearing the same watch," I narrowed my eyes, a mocking smile on my face.
"Miss Parks, you may not know that our restaurant has a strict policy for waitstaff. No jewelry except for me."
"But I saw the housekeepers upstairs wearing watches," I countered.
"That's because they have a set schedule to finish their tasks within a designated time," another waiter chimed in.
The manager wiped the sweat on his brow, growing visibly uncomfortable.
"I've found the person," I said slowly, my gaze never leaving the manager's face. I walked up to him.
At the back of the room, a server nervously dropped her clenched hands, biting her lip.
"The person who poured me the water is your girlfriend."
The manager froze, his face drained of color, and quickly looked at Alex, saying, "Mr. Herrera, it was indeed my girlfriend who served the water, but I swear I have no idea why she would have poisoned it."
Alex remained silent.
"I only said it was her who served the water, not that she poisoned it!" The manager looked extremely embarrassed.
As my eyes met the server standing in the corner, she suddenly turned and tried to flee.
But just as she did, someone appeared at the door and blocked her path.
She panicked, then returned to kneel in front of Alex, pleading, "Mr. Herrera, I'm sorry! Please, forgive me!"
