Abigail strutted into the room, flanked by a well-dressed middle-aged woman. Both were dressed in vibrant, attention-grabbing outfits.
"Carolina, what are you doing here?" Samantha frowned slightly as she looked at the woman standing beside Abigail.
Carolina Cole, Abigail's mother, was Samantha's aunt.
A famous model in the fashion world, she was over forty but still dressed flamboyantly.
Standing next to Abigail, they didn't even look like mother and daughter—they looked like sisters.
It was hard to deny, Carolina had clearly had some work done, and while it was obvious, it still looked good.
"Here to apologize?" I asked, turning to Samantha with a bright smile.
"Apologize? Who's apologizing to who?" Carolina's sharp gaze locked onto me, her eyes cold and menacing.
Abigail, now with a newfound sense of confidence thanks to her mother's presence, glared at me. "Mom, it's her—she's the one who scratched my face."
Carolina trembled, her cold eyes now fixed on me. The hostility in them was palpable. "You... you're the one who hurt my daughter?"
"Yes," I answered with a smile, my eyes lazily scanning Abigail up and down.
I barely gave her a second glance, but even that was enough for Abigail to flinch. She instinctively grabbed her mother's arm, seeking comfort.
Oh? Now you're scared?
Carolina lightly patted Abigail's hand, trying to reassure her. "Abigail, with me and Samantha here, what's there to be afraid of?"
She paused, then noticed Alex, sitting calmly in his chair, his face unreadable.
"Alex is here too?" Carolina's anger seemed to evaporate at the sight of him. She smiled widely, turning to Abigail and saying, "I told you, with Samantha and Alex around, who would dare hurt my precious Abigail?"
"Carolina, Laurel is Alex's guest. Abigail... she..." Samantha began, stepping toward Carolina, hesitating.
Carolina's eyes fell on the pool of blood on the floor, and she froze for a moment. Then, her cold gaze shot straight at me. "A guest?"
She took a deep breath and looked at Alex before speaking again, her tone softer but still laced with ice. "If she's Alex's guest, then I won't make things difficult. Just kneel and apologize—two kowtows, and I'll let it go, for Alex's sake."
"Kneel and apologize?" I laughed in disbelief, my eyes locked on Abigail.
Her face, now wrapped in bandages, was pale and haggard. She looked pitiful, but in her bright eyes, there was still a glimmer of arrogance and fury.
Seeing Carolina's haughty attitude, thinking I would simply kowtow to her precious daughter without question, I understood where Abigail's attitude came from.
The apple really doesn't fall far from the tree.
Carolina, seeing Alex's continued silence, seemed to weigh the situation in her mind. Perhaps she thought my position in Alex's eyes wasn't important, and her voice turned sharper. "If you won't kneel, then let my daughter take a knife to your face. That should make us even."
"Fine," I said without hesitation, turning slowly to the server standing nearby. "If you want to even the score, let's see if your daughter is as lucky as I am."
Carolina frowned, looking at Abigail with confusion, then sneered. "Luck? What makes you think you can compare to my daughter?"
"Abigail, don't you want to tell your mother what you did to me?" I tilted my head, addressing Abigail directly. "Or should I just tell her?"
Abigail's eyes were filled with venom as she glared at me. "Laurel, do you even have the nerve to face me? You seduced Alex. I can't stand shameless people like you. I just wanted to vent, which is why I had you kidnapped. I didn't mean to hurt you. But you? You ruined my face."
"Did you not put drugs in my water? Did you not insult and humiliate me? Didn't you say you were going to find me three men to destroy me?" I asked calmly, as though discussing someone else's problems.
"I didn't!" Abigail immediately denied it, her voice shaky.
"Didn't?" I let out a cold laugh.
I had expected Abigail to deny it. After all, her tactics were as vile as they came. Not only would this ruin her reputation, but it would also bring shame to the Cole family. More importantly, the one she feared most—the one sitting silently behind me—was Alex.
Abigail, looking like the injured party, tugged at Carolina's arm. "Mom, I was just mad she stole Samantha's fiancé."
Carolina's eyes narrowed, and she spoke to me with growing fury. "I believe my daughter. You not only hurt her, but now you're accusing her of things she didn't do? Do you think the Cole family is to be trifled with?"
"Carolina, this was Abigail's fault from the start," Samantha interjected quickly.
"How could you turn on your own cousin, Samantha?" Carolina shot back, her voice turning cold as she shrugged off Samantha's arm. "Abigail is your cousin! You should be standing by her, not helping a stranger just because she's Alex's guest!"
"Carolina, stop," Samantha said with a darkened face, her irritation evident.
"Carolina," Alex's voice interrupted, smooth and calm as he stood up from his chair and walked over to my side. He placed a hand on my shoulder and looked at Carolina. "I think there's been a misunderstanding. Laurel isn't just my guest—she's my woman."
Carolina's eyes widened in surprise.
"No, no, Alex. You must have forgotten—you're already engaged to Samantha!" Carolina's expression shifted again, this time to one of realization, before her voice grew cold. "It's normal for men to have affairs, but Alex, you can't make Samantha suffer. How could you bring a woman like this out in public? Don't tell me Abigail is upset about this."
"Carolina, Laurel is my woman. When has she ever been someone I need to hide?" Alex's voice was firm, his gaze unwavering as he addressed her.
"Alex... what do you mean by that?" Carolina's face twisted in shock. "Did you forget you're already engaged to Samantha? You two have been—"
"Carolina, take Abigail to her room," Samantha interrupted, her voice trembling but still holding onto her composure. She gave Alex a meaningful look, her lips still curled into a gentle smile. It was clear she wasn't angry with him.
She truly was a master at playing the part of the angel.
But hearing Samantha tell Abigail to leave wasn't something I could let slide. I couldn't resist pointing out, "Aren't you here to apologize? Abigail, since Alex is giving you face, you should kneel and apologize. Two kowtows, and this will be over."
