Juliet trembled, her face paling as she quickly denied it. "No, I never said that."
I knew Juliet had never liked me. But we'd always kept our distance.
She helped Rosemary humiliate me simply because she thought I was easy to push around.
After all, who wouldn't want to squeeze a soft, ripe fruit?
But she never considered that I wasn't alone—besides Angela, there was Alex by my side.
"Never said that?" I watched Juliet in silence for a moment. My gaze slowly shifted from her anxious, flawless face to the rest of the room, and I sneered. "Seems like you're involved after all, Juliet.
"Have you been hanging around Rosemary so long that you've lost your senses? What made you think you could stir up such trouble? Oh, I almost forgot. You're not just trying to get back at me, you also want to take revenge on Angela, don't you?"
"No!"
"No, I didn't," Juliet stammered, her face filled with panic. She wasn't foolish. She knew her position in the Hill family had only just improved slightly. If she offended the Adams family, she'd be finished.
"I overheard it by accident..."
"Juliet, stop lying!" Abigail shot Juliet a venomous glare, her eyes practically burning holes into her.
I let a small smile curve at the corner of my lips and turned to look at Samantha, who was standing quietly to the side. Her expression was calm, but I could see a subtle flash of fear in her beautiful, deep-set eyes.
There was a world of difference between humiliating someone and destroying their reputation—defiling someone's innocence is a different, far darker thing.
A woman from a wealthy family, no matter how ruthless, would never stoop so low. If this got out, Abigail's reputation would be ruined. No noble family would ever consider marrying such a venomous woman.
Samantha, of course, couldn't let that happen, especially given their close ties.
"Juliet, what exactly are you implying?" Samantha raised her eyebrows slightly, her voice still soft, but there was an unmistakable hint of displeasure on her face.
"Are you suggesting that Abigail intentionally caused a scene at the welcome dinner Alex arranged for me?"
Juliet froze, her eyes wide with fear. She opened her mouth but couldn't find any words.
Of course, Abigail wasn't trying to ruin Samantha's dinner. What she wanted to destroy was me and, by extension, Angela, who was dragged into this mess with me.
Her original plan had been to drug me, but she hadn't counted on me waking up so suddenly. After I provoked her, she had no choice but to admit, in front of several other high-society women, what she truly intended to do—something she never should have said aloud.
As for those three men? They wouldn't be exposed until after the party, when Alex would break into my room and catch them in the act.
After all, catching someone red-handed in bed with another is the only undeniable proof.
Unfortunately for Abigail, I never gave her the chance, and in doing so, I wounded her pride.
Naturally, Abigail wouldn't admit she had intended to destroy my reputation, to label me a seductress and a promiscuous woman. Now that her scheme was exposed, she dismissed it with a nonchalant "I only wanted to warn her. There was a misunderstanding."
"Alex, Abigail was a bit reckless, but she would never be bold enough to ruin someone's reputation." Samantha glanced at Alex, her eyes filled with restrained anger.
Was she defending Abigail?
Meanwhile, Carolina, standing nearby, shot a cold look at Juliet and said, "Stop slandering Abigail. She's pure. She wouldn't even understand those kinds of depraved things."
I couldn't help but snicker under my breath, my gaze locked on Abigail. Did she really think she was still a virgin? But the things she'd said clearly made her sound like an expert.
It was funny—these wealthy girls who pretended to be so innocent when they returned home. Didn't they get tired of the act?
Carolina glared at me with an expression as dark as thunderclouds, but she didn't dare make a move, especially with Alex standing behind me.
"Alex, you and Miss Parks have your own relationship, and Samantha can be generous and tolerate that. But now that she's coming after my woman, I won't let it slide," Carolina said, sizing me up with a smirk. "Alex, do your parents know you're dating a woman like her? I heard she was once Austin's ex."
I furrowed my brow.
What did my past with Alex have to do with any of this? Why was his family even brought into the conversation?
Just as I was about to speak, Alex suddenly put his arm around my shoulders.
"Laurel is indeed Austin's ex, but they've broken up. The moment I saw her, I knew I had to make her mine—otherwise, what if Austin got her back?"
My lips twitched in disbelief. I looked up at Alex, and there it was—his beautiful, glowing eyes, fixed on me with so much affection and indulgence.
I hadn't realized just how good he was at playing the game.
Everyone in the room stared at us, shocked, even Samantha, who had tears welling in her eyes. Her face twisted into something that barely resembled a smile.
But she didn't speak. She just looked at Alex with a bitter smile.
"Seems like Abigail was right to call her a seductress," Carolina sneered, her voice thick with anger. She shot a cold look at Alex. "Alex, are you trying to ruin your engagement?"
The mention of "ruin" seemed to snap Samantha out of her daze. She spoke up quickly, "Carolina, I'll discuss this with Alex."
"Discuss?" Carolina chuckled bitterly. "Samantha, do you really think he plans to marry you?"
I glanced at Samantha. From the first time I met her until now, it seemed she was truly invested in Alex.
As for their tangled emotions, I couldn't say for sure, but it was clear that Samantha had feelings for Alex—after all, she had been ready to offer me a 6 million dollars breakup fee.
Whether she truly loved Alex or not, I couldn't tell. People could fake love—just like Austin did in the past, and Alex was doing now.
They didn't really love me, but they sure knew how to act the part.
I'd been fooled once; I wasn't going to fall for it again.
"Samantha, didn't I make myself clear the last time?" Alex looked at her, his eyes filled with a hint of confusion.
Carolina turned to Samantha, her voice filled with doubt. "What's going on between you two?"
Samantha fell silent for a moment before replying, "Carolina, Alex and I have a few issues. But it's nothing. He'll marry me for sure."
I stared at Samantha, utterly baffled. Why was she so desperate to marry Alex?
He had just admitted in front of her that I was the woman he loved. How could she just pretend nothing was wrong?
Could this really be true love?
