Alex didn't respond to Samantha's question.
But it was clear to everyone in the room that something was off.
Alex didn't seem like he was about to marry Samantha at all.
Yet, Samantha didn't cry or throw a tantrum. Instead, her gaze held an air of patience, almost pleading, as it slowly drifted toward Alex.
For a brief moment, I saw something in her that mirrored my own feelings.
It took me back to the third year of my relationship with Austin.
It was my birthday, and I was late because of work.
When I pushed open the door, I saw a beautiful woman, dressed scantily, sitting on Austin's lap, her cheeks flushed.
The two of them stared at each other, their eyes lingering, their gazes almost pulling them closer.
During that time, I had several projects piling up, and I worked late into the night, often well past midnight.
Even when I came home, I was stuck in the study, organizing the work I needed to finish the next day.
Austin rarely came back because Amanda didn't like me.
So, I didn't live in the Herrera family home. Austin said it was to avoid tension with his mother, and since we weren't married yet, it would be improper for me to move in.
Honestly, I wasn't in a hurry to marry Austin. What I wanted was a home that belonged to the two of us.
Austin rented me an apartment close to my workplace.
He'd visit, but the visits were few and far between.
Of course, he always had some excuse—work, or going back to his own house.
I blindly trusted him, after all, we had been together for so long.
He always spoiled me, at least in front of others.
Three days before my birthday, I accidentally found a diamond ring in his pocket.
I thought it was for our proposal at the birthday party. After all, we had planned to get married after graduation.
But with the job search and everything else, we never talked about marriage.
When I saw the ring, I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement.
But then, I saw something I shouldn't have.
What hurt the most wasn't the affair, but the fact that Austin didn't give me the diamond ring. Instead, he gave me a necklace from the same brand.
The diamond ring, however, had found its way to Rosemary's hand.
I swallowed my anger, and after the birthday party, I asked Austin directly if he had any plans for marriage.
To my surprise, he didn't even bother to try and pacify me. He just stormed off, slamming the door.
"I'm tired," I said, lifting my gaze to Alex.
I only said it to give him an excuse, because it was obvious Alex didn't want to answer Samantha's question.
It was obvious that Alex Herrera did not want to answer Samantha Harvey's question.
If he had, he would have said something by now.
Maybe there were concerns, or other reasons he couldn't say it out loud yet.
But I was sure he had already privately rejected Samantha.
However, Samantha didn't seem willing to accept Alex's decision alone.
At that moment, I understood why she was so desperate to remove me from the picture.
But while I sympathized with her, I also felt she was lucky.
At least she hadn't wasted her youth or poured all her emotions into someone like Alex.
I was taken aback by my own thoughts.
Why was I so certain that Samantha didn't really love Alex?
Was it just because loving someone meant you had to be by their side all the time?
Giving up your own dreams, following them unconditionally—was that what true love really was?
Now that I thought about it, maybe I was just foolish.
Love wasn't something that could last forever.
"Alright, let's go rest in the room," Alex said, his eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made me feel as if I were the only thing in the room.
He was playing the role of a man who had loved me secretly for years.
I had to admit, he was doing a great job.
Carolina didn't stop us, probably out of consideration for Samantha.
But I knew deep down that she wouldn't let Abigail's injury go unpunished.
Alex escorted me back to my room.
He came inside too, because after all, in this little performance, we couldn't afford any slip-ups.
Once the door was shut, Alex's burning gaze didn't leave me.
I turned my head to look at him and said, "I need to rest for a bit."
"The dinner starts at eight. You have two hours, but you should go down at least half an hour early."
I nodded, of course, I had to go. The menu had all my favorite dishes, the ones I rarely indulged in.
"Don't you have anything you want to ask me?" Alex sat on the sofa, lifting his gaze slowly to meet mine.
"I'll lie down for a while, remember to call me when it's time."
It wasn't that I didn't have questions, but knowing too much wasn't necessarily a good thing for me.
"You can ask me anything you want."
I paused, thinking for a moment, then said, "Can I stay in Nifelheim City for now?"
"Sure, but you'll need to return home every night."
"Home?" I asked, confused.
"Honeydew Estate. I have two apartments there. I'll move in too."
His voice was calm, but my heart skipped a beat.
The Herrera Group was based in Newton City, so was he planning to stay in Nifelheim City for good?
Alex noticed the confusion on my face and smiled slightly. "We're married. Shouldn't we be living together? Otherwise, don't you think your mom would start questioning things?"
He made a valid point, and I couldn't find a way to argue.
"I've already arranged for Maliyah Javier to move in."
My eyes widened in disbelief. "They've moved in already?"
Alex nodded, his tone cool. "The house is big enough. It'll be livelier if we all stay together."
He picked up his glass of water, took a sip, and then looked at me again.
"Aren't you tired? Go lie down."
I sighed and turned to walk away, but Alex's deep voice echoed again, laced with an almost magnetic intensity.
"Laurel, is your way of dealing with problems to just ignore them?"
I froze, my heart tightening.
It felt as though a hidden scar had been ripped open. I forced a smile, turning back to face Alex, who was sitting on the sofa with an expression that was calm but filled with a mixture of confusion and concern.
"Running from pain doesn't solve anything," he said.
My heart felt like it had been stabbed, my hands involuntarily clenching into fists.
This old fox really was just as sharp as they said.
"Don't act like you know me so well. We're not that familiar," I said, frowning, my voice cold.
No one liked having their secrets laid bare.
