I returned to my room, closed my eyes, but sleep was nowhere to be found.
I let out a long sigh and lightly touched the scar on my wrist.
The faint sting was nothing serious.
After all, injuries I had when I was little were as common as breathing.
My mother never allowed me to fight back, so I was always the one getting picked on.
I'd often come home with bruises, and when Grandma saw them, her face would twist with concern.
Then, she'd storm downstairs and shout, "Whoever's kid bullied my Laurel, next time I'll make sure they never walk again."
Honestly, it was better if she didn't scold them—when she did, the bullying got worse.
But it didn't last long. The little brats never dared to come near me again.
And no one called me a "little bastard" anymore because Javier would beat them up for me.
He was two years younger than me, but much taller.
But no matter how much he ate, he never gained weight—he just kept growing.
Every time we went out, people mistook him for my older brother.
But to be honest, Javier wasn't exactly the model student. He'd be out fighting, causing trouble all the time. Part of it, I'll admit, was my fault.
Old habits were hard to break, especially when he had been raised that way.
Every time Javier came home after a fight, bruised and bloodied, he wasn't scolded. Instead, Grandma would cook him his favorite—braised beef steaks.
He'd eat like he was starving, probably trying to make up for every punch he'd taken.
So, the fights went from once a week to three times a week.
Eventually, he realized that fighting didn't earn him any more steak, but he couldn't stop his "heroic" streak.
In middle school, he nearly got hit in the head protecting someone.
If I hadn't shown up in time, he probably would've ended up a vegetable.
That's when I learned that a knife wound bleeds, and too much blood loss could kill you.
The gash on his body was deep, painful, and terrifying.
When my mother saw the long scar on my arm, she desperately tried to get me treatment.
She said, "Girls' arms should be smooth and beautiful."
Eventually, the scar faded, and for a while, Javier behaved himself.
But he still kept thinking about avenging me.
I wasn't the type to hold grudges, though.
Maybe it was fear, or maybe it was just a reluctance to be hurt again.
Alex wasn't wrong—since childhood, I had always been someone who chose to run away.
In relationships, I was the one who turned a blind eye.
I thought if I acted deaf and dumb, everything would turn out the way I wanted.
But I later realized it was nothing but self-deception.
Even when people bullied me, I just ran away without thinking.
And I didn't think there was anything wrong with that.
It kept me from getting hurt. Was that really so wrong?
I couldn't understand why Alex seemed to know me so well.
Had he investigated me secretly?
After thinking for a while, I called Maliyah.
"You guys moved to Honeydew Estate?" I asked before she could say anything.
On the other end, I heard Maliyah's excited voice, "Laurel! Alex had someone move us in, and he even helped me get a job! When are you coming back?"
"What about Carolina? Does she know?" I asked.
Carolina would never accept Alex's kindness for no reason.
"Of course she knows," Maliyah paused, then added, "Javier and I both have our own rooms now."
"Got it. Has Alex asked you about me?"
"Nope, why? Alex has been so nice to us."
I forced a smile, and after a brief silence, Maliyah spoke again.
"Alex is the president of the Herrera Group, but he's so down-to-earth. Unlike Austin, who always acted cold and indifferent whenever we saw him. He never really talked to us."
I froze. I had never noticed those little things before.
But now, it seemed Maliyah's words were true.
During my six years with Austin, he rarely visited my family.
Even when he did, he'd eat quickly and leave, barely exchanging a word with Maliyah or Javier.
I had always thought it was because he was uncomfortable, maybe shy.
But now, thinking back, maybe he just looked down on my family, like his mother did.
"Laurel, are you okay? I shouldn't have mentioned that jerk Austin."
Hearing Maliyah's angry tone, I asked, "What did Carolina say to you?"
"My mom told me about you two, but don't worry, I didn't tell Javier. With his temper, if he knew, he'd probably go to the Herrera family and beat him up," Maliyah whispered.
"It's all in the past."
"Did Austin make things hard for you?" Maliyah asked quietly.
"I'm Mrs. Herrera now. How could he make things hard for me?"
I always shared the good news, never the bad.
"That's true. Alex is so nice to us. He'll definitely protect you well."
Suddenly, I remembered Maliyah had mentioned a job.
"You said Alex found you a job? Which company?"
"Yeah! Didn't Alex tell you? He's planning to open a branch in Nifelheim City, and he'll be living here from now on."
I froze completely, my mind racing.
The mystery was solved. Alex, the usually low-key Alex, was throwing such a lavish birthday party here because he was planning to open a branch in Nifelheim City.
But why was the president of the Herrera Group leaving the main headquarters to run a branch?
I hung up with Maliyah and lay on my bed, trying to make sense of it all.
The more I thought about it, the more something felt off.
If Alex had cut ties with the Harvey family, how could he set up a branch in Nifelheim City?
After all, Nifelheim City was the Harvey family's turf.
I walked to the living room, where Alex was sitting on the sofa, his eyes half-closed, looking a bit tired.
Had he fallen asleep?
I quietly grabbed a blanket from the room and gently draped it over him.
Just as I was about to slip away, Alex suddenly opened his eyes, staring at me with a smile. "Mrs. Herrera, why so nervous? I'm not going to eat you."
"Did you eavesdrop on me?"
Alex smirked, glancing around the room. "Your voice was so loud, I couldn't pretend not to hear."
"You're opening a branch in Nifelheim City? You're going to upset the local rich families. What's your plan? Do you know that even a strong dragon can't suppress the local snakes? The Harvey family runs everything here."
"So, Mrs. Herrera, are you volunteering to step aside?" Alex raised an eyebrow, his tone amused.
