"Mr. Yeats, are you going back to the city? Can I get a ride?" I looked pleadingly at Henry, sitting in the car with a solemn expression.
Henry glanced at me indifferently. After a short deliberation, he slowly said, " We can only take one person. You sit in the front passenger seat."
"Okay," I quickly replied.
"Laurel." Angela looked at me worriedly.
"I have something urgent to attend to," I said.
"But you're injured. What happened?" asked Angela.
Angela held my hand. Her smooth face was a maze of confusion, but she could vaguely sense the anxiety in my eyes.
"I'm fine. Don't worry. I'll call you when I get home." I sighed inwardly.
"The ambulance from the city..."
Before Angela could finish her sentence, I turned around and got into Henry's car.
I saw Angela frown and look anxious in the rear mirror of the backseat.
There had never been any secrets between Angela and me.
We would tell each other without any warning no matter what happened.
Because people had to trust certain people unconditionally in the world.
It was as if one believed in oneself.
Best friends were never a derogatory term.
She was the person who could share my joy in the world, cry with me when I was sad, and laugh with me.
In the vast sea of people, she would always be the person I couldn't forget no matter where she was.
She would empty her savings for me with a phone call but never feared I would deceive her.
The kind of friendship that could be destroyed by mentioning money was not true friendship.
If friendship could be measured by money, it would not be true because true friendship is willing to risk one's life.
Only a friendship between gentlemen would be pure and simple.
Money is a good thing. It lets people recognize whether the person beside them is a human or a ghost. It could also be used to appraise love and friendship.
However, I didn't want to drag Angela along this time. It wouldn't take more than three tries.
Next time, I might not be lucky enough to avoid so-called small fights and accidents.
More importantly, Maliyah's sudden disappearance made me suspect that someone was taking revenge on the people around me.
'Is it Samantha? Who else could it be other than her?' I thought.
"I'm sorry for what happened just now." Henry's cold voice reached my ears.
"I can't trust anyone else," said Henry, sighing softly.
"It's fine," I quickly explained. "Actually, I was being rude because I was rushing back to the city."
Upon hearing Henry's words, my heart couldn't help but skip a beat.
I thought, 'It seems like he has begun to suspect someone is secretly targeting him. Does he have a suspect, then? He must have, or he wouldn't be so guarded with strangers.'
"Are you Laurel Parks?" Henry asked.
"Yes." I turned around and quietly looked at Henry and his wife sitting in the backseat.
Jenna Alston, Quinn's mother, looked at me with a hint of surprise, but it was as if she couldn't quite meet my gaze in an instant.
Jenna was at least 50 but looked at least ten years younger than her age. Her hair was good, and her complexion was great. Only some fine wrinkles were at the corners of her eyes, making it difficult to guess her true age.
Even if her old neighbors saw her like this, they probably wouldn't recognize her.
Jenna had always been quite good-looking. She had a beautiful face with the big eyes
She looked gentle and delicate like a sweet woman.
She was wearing a long silk dress, looking elegant and noble.
She was a completely different person from Jenna I remembered.
I sighed inwardly and thought, 'Quinn, I've found your mother. Not only does she not die, but she lives the life she has dreamed of.'
My fingertips dug into my palms tightly. Didn't they say that one's ten fingers were connected to one's heart? But why didn't I feel any pain at all? I only felt a bone-chilling cold.
Jenna did not even appear on the day Quinn died.
Some people said it was not that Jenna did not want to come, but that she was afraid of being beaten up.
Jenna could not escape if she returned.
Callum, Quinn's father, lost his job after Quinn died. Later, he was locked up because he hurt someone after drinking.
Later, we moved out of the old house.
I had never heard of Quinn's parents again.
I never expected Jenna to turn around and become the mayor's wife many years later.
"Is this Mrs. Yeats?" I took a deep breath and looked at Jenna with a smile.
I knew Jenna wanted to pretend she didn't know me. Otherwise, she would have called me the moment she saw me.
Even if she didn't recognize me just then, I had introduced myself. Could it be that she still didn't recognize me?
I didn't know why Quinn would take Larry to commit suicide. He had been waiting for Jenna to take them away.
When Quinn was beaten by Callum to the point of being covered in injuries and even chased with a knife, Quinn did not abandon his brother and did not go to die.
However, why did Quinn suddenly die?
Although Callum was hateful, the most hateful one was Jenna.
No matter how difficult it was for her, Jenna should not abandon her two children to Callum, the devil.
"Yes, this is my wife, Kelly Yeats." Henry looked at Jenna, sitting beside him.
My heart couldn't help but tremble when I heard the name.
'Could it be that Quinn could not find Jenna because she had changed her name? So, Jenna has never thought of returning to that family. Has she never thought of her two children, too?' I thought.
A careless smile tugged at the corners of my lips. So sometimes, kinship could be used to betray.
'Jenna, have you ever thought about your two dead sons? You know they've always thought about their mother who used to protect them,'' I thought again.
I let out a long breath and squeezed the wound on my fingertips tightly, trying to use the pain to soothe the sudden dull pain and suffocation in my heart.
"Were you the one who saved me yesterday?" asked Henry.
I nodded slightly. "I happened to see it."
"Thanks a lot, but how did you know I'd hurt myself?"
I could see doubt and confusion in Henry's eyes.
"Because I used to have a neighbor boy who had been sick since he was little. Every time his illness acted up, his brother would extend his arm to prevent him from biting his tongue," I said.
Henry's eyes revealed a trace of sadness when he heard that. "Is his illness better now?"
I pursed my lips and suppressed the sadness in my heart and the tears that were about to fall. I squeezed out the reality that I didn't want to admit.
"They're all dead."
Jenna's face instantly turned dreadfully pale when she heard the word dead.
Suddenly, the silence in the car was broken by the sound of a phone ringing.
It was Jenna's phone. When she saw the caller ID, she pressed the answer button.
"Mom, are you and Dad okay? I heard there was an accident on the suburban road. Are you guys okay?"
Kelly took a deep breath and said, "Asher, we're fine."
