Arthur's POV
I took a long drag on my cigarette before releasing the smoke into the air. The sound of the bikers was a fade at the back of my mind. My mind replayed mother's words.
“You can't say no,”
I wanted to walk off. The marriage alliance had been on hold for so long, but I should have known the old man would not stop at pushing me to be the CEO of his goddamn company.
I turned my head to the side. “You know what my response is, Mother,”
She walked over to where I stood, placing her hand on my arm with her gaze sympathetic. “I understand your resistance, Killian, but you cannot fight your father. You love your profession, but he is ready to take it all away if you don't do as he says.”
I shook her hand off me, but she was not done. “You have three days, Killian,”
I took another long drag of the cigarette, my face squeezed. Puffing, I tapped the tip, filling the ashtray at my side. I pressed it down the burning edge on the tray, killing the fire.
“Forget about Stephanie. She is gone. You need to get married and bear heirs for the family,” was my mother's text message to me after I left.
She would do anything to ensure her husband got his way. I picked up another stick, flicking my lighter, but before the cigarette could get some heat, it's snatched off my lips.
I snapped my head to the side, my gaze ready to burn that person, but I relaxed at the sight of Jackson, who sat across from me. “Wallowing alone,” he said, picking up another lighter.
I didn't reply, only lighting up another cigarette. “I'm guessing they're home,” Jackson said.
I nodded. “Could have guessed. Only his presence makes you this worked up,” he said. “His company again, right?”
“The old man likes it when I'm upset,” I responded.
Ever since I've known him, that's all he does. The only person who had not tried ruining my mood was my grandfather, and he was gone. Only he could have brought me out of this situation.
“Why don't you tell him about the resort and the restaurant?” Jackson suggested.
“Horrible idea,” I replied. “That would only make things worse.”
I was a billionaire without my father's so-called company. I always hated how he ran it and how he wanted me to run it like he did even though I was 'in charge'.
I owned the resort in the village and a few other high-end businesses, which included the restaurant I had my meal with Mum, but that would remain hidden until I wanted it otherwise.
Jackson nodded, and we fell into silence for a few minutes. “I didn't think you'd speak to me again,” I said, taking a break from smoking as I tossed the stick onto the ashtray, sitting upright.
“No lady has ever come in between us. As much as I do not want you close to my sister, it's not a reason for us to fight. You haven't… hurt her,” he said, emptying the glass of whiskey he held.
I wanted to ask why he would think that, but the ambiance was too calm to ruin. “How is she?” I asked, sinking back into the chair.
I had not seen her in a while. I did not have her contact to even speak to her either. Jackson nodded. “Mum says she is fine,” he sighed. “I haven't seen her since that day. I lost my cool, and she must still be upset. Not once had she stepped out of the room. Only Mum is allowed in the room,” he explained.
I wondered what could make Sierra this upset. I saw it in her eyes; sadness, vulnerability, pain, that she was trying to tuck away. I haven't had the opportunity to ask, and it hurts me to think someone dare do something to her.
“I know what you want from her. She can't give it to you and I won't allow her to,” he said.
“And what do I want?” the side of my lips curved up as I picked up my glass.
“You don't need me to spell it out. We all know what you've ever wanted from a woman. I know what you like in a woman. Sierra, she doesn't have it to be your girlfriend. Ladies like her are a dump ground for your shit and vent when you want to get back at your father,”
“Sierra is not fit to be my girlfriend,” I said, taking a sip of my drink. “I don't want her to be.”
Jackson's eyes widened in shock, and my smile spread. He exhaled and nodded. The expression on his face was a mix of disappointment and expectancy, which only made me amused.
“You need to stay away from her. It's the root of all of this. I want her to enjoy her stay here. She is broken enough. Pick any other girl to fuck and dump but her.” Jackson's softness disappeared with those last words.
His anger and a subtle threat lingered in them. Now, there was something more dangerous dancing in his eyes. I knew Jackson was protective of his sister, and I admired it. But it wasn't enough to scare me. “Jack, the ladies are here,” one of boys yelled.
“Quit talking you two and come over here,” another gestured for us, the guys already surrounded by ladies.
Jackson gave me a look. He waited for a response from me. But that word really was not in my dictionary. Maybe for someone else, but not Sierra, never Sierra. I wanted her.
He stood up with a sigh, struding back to the guys, and my eyes caught something on the table. I took a glance at Jackson, enjoying himself and back at his phone, before a smile came to my face.
“Just you watch me very much NOT stay away from Sierra,” I muttered to myself.
