Sierra's POV
The resort was bustling as we arrived. It was only a week in December and most people were already deep in the Christmas spirit. Shelly led me through, and soon we were in the restaurant section.
She walked briskly towards an empty table. “Sit,” she gestured for one of the chairs across from her.
I still did not feel convinced being here, so I was reluctant to take a seat. “If you are going to be this way, why come with me? Take a seat, Sierra, I don't bite,” Shelly said.
With a sigh, I took a seat and, almost on cue, three ladies approached the table and helped themselves to the seats scattered around the table. I turned my gaze to Shelly, visibly upset.
“What's this? I thought you wanted to speak with me alone,” I said.
One of the ladies scoffed. “You do have an attitude,” she commented, folding her arms.
“Hi, Sierra,” another lady said with a fake smile. “I'm Yvonne. That's Jessie,” she pointed at the one who spoke first and then gestured at the other, “And this is Hart.”
Aside from the hostility I got from them, they were all pretty. Yvonne had a wavy blonde hair, thick lashes and her makeup well blended out, making her stand out. Out of the three ladies, I could tell she was the boss.
Aside from that, they seemed wealthy with their branded dresses and heavy perfumes that made it hard for them to be missed. Jessie was the only one who did not hide her dislike for me. Hart seemed to be torn and Yvonne, her mask, was fully on with that smile of hers.
Then Shelly she seemed pleased with herself. “I heard you are new in the village,” Yvonne said.
“I'm not,” my voice shook.
I didn't want to feel intimidated, but I was, not when I wasn't sure what was going on. “She grew up here, but she left years ago, and now she is back with a child,” Shelly whispered the last sentence.
“I'm guessing you are a slut,” Yvonne said, her voice so gentle one who did not hear her words would think she was complimenting me.
“Obviously, she is. How do you explain how he got close to a piece of nothing like her?” Jessie fired.
“I'm sorry about Jessie. She is very blunt,” Yvonne said to me. “So tell me, how did you get close to him?”
I looked around the table. “Who?”
“Don't act dumb with me.” Yvonne's mask fell.
“What is your relationship with Arthur?” Hart spoke for the first time.
So this was about him. “Nothing,” I replied.
“Don't you dare lie!” Jessie barked, slamming her palm on the table.
The guests of the restaurant turned to us and Yvonne's fake smile returned, using her eyes to keep Jessie calm. “Do you know who I am?” Yvonne asked.
I stared at her for a while. It was a known thing that many ladies wanted to be with Arthur. Rich, bold, beautiful and, from the looks of it, intimidating, perfect for someone like Arthur.
I could barely say a word out without my voice cracking and I wanted to be with him. I shook my head. I definitely did not know her. “She would not, obviously. Girls like her can never know someone as perfect as you,” Shelly said, glaring at me.
The more I watched and heard her speak, the more I realized why Mum and Dad did not like her. Well, it seemed Jackson wasn't also perfect when it came to relationships. We both knew how to pick the wrong partners.
“What is your relationship with Arthur?” Yvonne asked, her voice laced with venom, but her smile still intact.
“Arthur is my brother's best friend,” was all I said, but I pinched myself, again hearing my shaky voice.
“I know you like him. Everyone does. Every lady wants to be his woman, but he could never choose them. You know why? Because he doesn't like used up women,” Yvonne said.
I folded my fists, trying to suppress my anger. “Arthur just wants sex,” Hart said. It sounded like advice.
“Haven't you had enough?” Jessie asked.
“Could it be he hasn't hit yet?” Shelly asked with widened eyes.
“Maybe she is resisting. Playing the long game so she could make him fall for her.” Jessie snapped her fingers and turned to me with a glare.
“Arthur would never fall for you. Have you seen his girlfriends? They are all perfect. While you, you look old and wrinkled,” she scoffed, “Don't get me started on your bags and unkept hair,”
I subconsciously touched my hair. I held it up in a scattered bun and didn't think of it while leaving the house. There were no mirrors around to check how I looked.
“There is nothing about you that is pleasing. Here's the deal. Stay away from Arthur and I will not make your life here miserable. Understood?” Yvonne said.
All I wanted when I came here was a peaceful holiday; no chaos, no drama, and certainly no trouble, but everything about Arthur seemed to be stirring in that direction.
I nodded without a word. Yvonne smiled. “Perfect,” she said and rose with her minions, and they left.
I took a few minutes to gather myself and helped myself towards the exit, but just as I was about to take a turn in the hallway; I heard them. “Why didn't you tell her you two are engaged? It would make her back off easily,” Hart asked.
Yvonne was Arthur's fiancée? It seemed all I saw was nothing but a lie. He truly only wanted to sex.
“People like her would not. She is nothing but a slut. Yvonne, you need to teach her a lesson. A mere threat would not work,” Jessie said.
“I think I have an idea,” Shelly said.
“Excuse me,” someone said behind me.
“Oh, I'm sorry,” I stepped aside for the waiters with a table.
But once they were gone, and I turned to listen in, Yvonne and the others were gone. This was bad, and it made my heart race. I would not be able to find out what they were planning.
Arthur had a fiancée, and I kept deluding myself all this while. I should have known. “You are always so stupid,” Vance's words echoed in my mind.
My eyes stung with tears. I truly was horrible, or maybe cursed. I dragged my feet out of the resort. I went into the road without looking.
I wasn't sure what Yvonne was going to do to me. Was I going to resort to running away from my village as well? My phone dinged with a notification and, just as I was about to check, a speeding car came honking at my side and everything turned black.
