                    Sierra's POV
My heart raced as I stepped forward, darting my eyes around the crowded space. “Where… where…”
My voice trembled. I ran over to my parents, who were having a conversation. “Mum, where's Elvis?” I asked, barely keeping it in control.
“He-” she raised her head, pointing in a direction, but then she paused, rising when she found Elvis was not there.
“I'll find him,” Jackson said, running off.
“You can't even care for your own child. What's the use of you?!”
It returned. Vance's scolding. His words that hurt in ways I could never explain. “What exactly can you do right?!”
I shook my head, tears escaping my eyes. “Elvis!” I called out, my voice hoarse.
“Calm down, Sierra. We'll find him,” Dad consoled.
I nodded, but I was losing my mind. Where could he have gone? I should have taken more caution. My chest felt tight, and my body shivered. Not from the cold, but from fear.
From Vance's words. I sniffled and tried to run off. “No, Sierra,” Mum held me back. “Jackson would find him,”
I looked around, any and every sign possible. My gaze went down the slope. I could still remember how good he was on it while we raced, but what if he…
I had to wait. “He is fine,” I chanted in my head to keep me from going crazy.
“Sit, Riri,” Mum tried guiding me to the bench, but I could not.
I shook my head. Under my care, he went missing. How could I sit? I sniffled, still looking around. Mum knew to keep a firm grip on me, or I didn't mind going down that slope to get my child back.
I could not lose him, no matter what. Mum rubbed my back, trying to keep me calm, but with each second of no sign of Elvis, I grew more agitated. I shut my eyes, trying to keep my breathing calm.
It was growing, rapid, and I could barely keep going. I wasn't sure how long Jackson and Arthur were gone, but I had reached my wits' end. I could not stay idle anymore.
“Get your ass up!”
Vance's scolding echoed in my mind once again, and I pulled away from Mum's grip, heading for the slope. No matter how dangerous, I would get Elvis back. “Si-”
“Elvis is here,” Jackson announced.
I turned around and found Arthur holding him. More tears rolled down my cheeks as I ran to my son, wrapping my arms around him. “Where did you go?” I sobbed.
“To pee. I got lost. I'm sorry, Mama,” I felt his hand on my back.
I pulled away. “You should have told me. Do you know how worried I was?”
“You told me I was a big boy now, Mama,” he said.
“Calm down, Riri. He usually goes himself with the two of us. It's a bit crowded today, which made him confused,” Dad said.
I could not explain that with me, I needed to know everything or I'll lose my mind. “You tell me where you are going next time, okay?” I told Elvis.
He hummed with a nod of his head. “I'm sorry, Mama, for making you worry,” he said.
I brushed some loose strand of hair on his forehead and hugged him once more. “Okay, I think that's it for today,” Dad said. “Come Elvis.”
Elvis took Dad's hand and walked away with the others. Watching them leave, I staggered back, my muscles still tense. I slumped on the bench, shutting my eyes. Even though we were divorced, Vance still had a hook around me.
Everything seemed to bring him to my mind. I could never run away from it. I sniffled, throwing my head back as I let the tears fall. I lost Elvis once. He went missing for hours.
He locked me up. A shiver ran down my spine at the thought. My hands trembled, but wasn't it what I deserved? “Good, louder!” his voice burst through my eardrums.
I gasped, sitting up. My chest rose and fell, tears dropping from my eyes. Then I felt something warm over my hand before taking it over. I stared at the hand around mine and traced it to the face.
Arthur's expression was hard to read. He only locked his gaze with mine, squeezing my hand reassuringly. He said nothing, but he didn't need to. I felt comforted, even with a little gesture.
A part of me wanted to pull away, but my muscles remained still. The tension in my shoulders slowly dissipated. When I felt like myself again, I pulled away, looking away from him.
“Do you feel better?” Arthur asked, not minding my actions as he tucked some strands of my hair behind my ear.
I lost my voice, staring into his eyes that held something I feared I might be reading wrong. But looking at it, feeling it as such, warmed my heart. If only it were true.
He caressed my cheeks, wiping my tears with his thumb gently, and I helped myself out of this daze. I grabbed his hand, startling him. “I'm fine,” I said, pulling away from him.
“Why didn't you leave with them?” I asked, sniffling and wiping my face.
“I needed to be with you,” he said.
“I don't need you to,” I said, defiantly, then looked away.
He stayed quiet, and after a moment; I turned to him. His eyes were still on me. It made me swallow. I tried looking away again, but he held my chin, stopping me.
He brought his face closer to mine, our breath intertwined. My gaze went to his lips, anticipating it coming on mine, but it didn't. Arthur only stared at me.
And for the longest, we remained that way, but then his lips landed softly on mine. Only then did I realize my muscles were still tense as it relaxed. His lips moved gracefully, and then he broke the kiss.
He held my face, his forehead on mine. “I would never hurt you, Sierra,” his husky voice made my heart flutter.
I scoffed, shoving him aside, and walked away. He pulled me in by the arm, letting me take his laps as he held my chin. “Meet me at the restaurant tonight. Eight o'clock,” he said, bringing his lips to mine.
Shutting my eyes, I waited for it. I heard him chuckle. “Want some?” I blinked my eyes open. “Do not be late,”
