                    Sierra’s POV
“Uncle Arthur!” I heard Elvis scream downstairs.
I stared at my reflection in the mirror. I had on a long, white bodycon dress with an off-the- shoulder neckline, long sleeves and a fitted waist. Mum had gotten the dress for me. She claimed it would be perfect for the party.
As much as I wanted to feel that it was, I doubted myself in it. Keeping my eyes fixed on the mirror, my reflection soon morphed to Vance’s degrading smirk. “You look horrible in that. You are a mother and are meant to look like it. Don’t you dare try to disgrace me again,” his voice resounded in my head.
My eyes turned red as I tried to hold back my tears. I shut my eyes, drowning out those words. Mum told me to heal and the first thing I was going to do was get rid of Vance’s voice in my head.
I took a seat and helped myself with my makeup. As much as I wanted to get rid of my fears, I knew a few of them I could not get rid of, like my flaws. Vance rang it so many times in my head, I finally saw them.
I became self-conscious. Whenever Arthur stared at my face for too long, I could not help but feel he could see them and he would dislike them. I covered them up properly and finally let my hair down.
I looked different, but felt the same. I was going to attend the party and try to feel myself again. Vance never allowed me to, so maybe this was a step in the right direction. I grabbed my matching purse and headed out of the room.
Walking down the stairs, everyone — Mum, Dad, Elvis, Jackson and Arthur all watched me. The look on Arthur’s face made me swallow. I wasn’t sure if it was admiration or something else.
“Wow, Mommy’s beautiful,” Elvis jumped, clapping.
Once down, my eyes landed on the bags scattered on the table. Arthur followed my eyesight and smiled. “I got a little something for everyone,” he said.
“He got me so many things, Mommy,” Elvis said, his eyes wide with excitement.
Arthur bent over and picked up a box. “I got you a little something too,” he opened the box and my brows rose in shock.
Seated in the box was a golden set of jewelries. “Let me put it on you,” Arthur said, picking up the necklace.
He not only helped me with the necklace but the earrings and bangles too. My fingers took in the carvings of the necklace. With my phone’s camera, I saw how it looked on me. Arthur stepped back, a smug look on his face.
“I made the right choice,” he said and took a step towards me. “Do you like it?” he asked.
I nodded, holding my tongue back from saying anything inappropriate. I wanted to refuse. It had been a while since I had any jewelry on. Roughly, throughout my marriage. “Thank you,” I said.
“Let’s go,” Arthur reached out his hand.
Hesitantly, I took it and looked over my shoulder to bid everyone goodbye, but the room was empty. I was so engrossed on Arthur I didn’t hear them leave. It seemed they had noticed.
Once we stepped out of the house, Jackson pulled away from his car, which he was leaning on. “I’ll take you,” he said, and Arthur's jaws clenched before he forced a smile.
“I’ll take her. She’s my date,” he turned to me, giving me a warm smile before leading me to his car parked behind Jackson’s.
Jackson glared at Arthur, but when he turned to me with a warm smile. Arthur opened the passenger door for me and I got in. A few seconds into the drive and I got a message from Jackson.
Be careful, Sierra. Have fun but do not fall in love.
The message read. I shut my screen, ignoring the message. I took a glance at Arthur, then looked away. I won’t fall in love, but maybe I would use him to heal and forget about Vance.
Once we arrived at the penthouse, I was greeted with luxury cars. “I thought it was a simple party,” I muttered, getting out of the car.
Ian did not seem like someone who would throw such a huge party. He seemed pretty simple. “They are famous. But I’m guessing Carol has a hand in how extravagant it is,” Arthur explained.
I could only guess that Carol was Ian’s girlfriend. The confidence I once had seemed to be decreasing as we walked towards the entrance. I could feel the air of wealth all around me. I thought it was a simple party and I could handle it, but now I doubted I could with how it was.
Stepping into the open area, we were greeted with elegance. I thought my dress was perfect, but the dresses worn by everyone were extraordinary. With one glance, I could tell they were custom made.
Their steps, smiles, and most importantly, their faces were breathtaking. It was no different from the guys. Most of them had on suits and a few others, like Arthur and Jackson, had on something almost casual, staring at the décor.
I turned to Arthur, trying to see if he was as nervous as I was, but he seemed calm. Who was I kidding? He was famous, and he had the perfect face card. Everyone would ignore his look once they took one look at his face.
But for me, I was certainly nothing in their eyes. I straightened my dress, trying to look my best presentable. Arthur noticed my nervousness and covered my palm on his arm. “You don’t need to worry about anything. Stay close to me. I am right here,” he whispered into my ears, his breath fanning my ears.
I swallowed, now consumed with something else. Our first stop was the couple who were in matching outfits. After which, Arthur only met with a few people and as for the rest, they came to him.
I could not give any input as I stood watching and listening. Most of them ignored me while others made silent jabs. I preferred they ignored me than do that. “Let’s go somewhere quiet,” Arthur said, taking my untouched glass of wine and placing it on a nearby table.
“Where?” I asked.
He winked. “Trust me,”
He led me to the top of the penthouse and onto the balcony. My gaze met the sun setting. “Do you like it?” he asked.
“Yes, it’s beautiful,” I responded, then turned to him.
“Just like you,” he said, stroking my cheek.
“Hey, Arthur,” someone yelled from below. “Ian’s asking for you,”
“Would you join me?” Arthur asked.
“I’ll stay here for a minute,” I said.
Arthur reluctantly let go of my hand and left. I watched the sky, a small smile creeping on my face. My fingers ached to draw, but I could not. Finally had enough, I turned around and realized I was not alone.
