Sierra’s POV
All eyes turned to Dexter. Before Arthur could speak, he took the lead. “The question wasn’t for you,” Eve said.
“He is hesitating. Why can’t I take it?” Dexter asked.
“I wasn’t hesitating,” Arthur said, and Eve gave him a look. “I’ll do anything to prove to Sierra I would not hurt her,” he added.
“What do you want me to do?” Arthur asked.
“Reject her,” Eve pointed at Maria. “publicly and confess to Sierra,” she took a step forward towards Arthur, “on your knees in front of everyone,”
“Fine, I’ll do it,” Arthur said, matching out of the balcony.
I pulled Eve to the side. “Isn’t that risky? I don’t want to be his girlfriend right now,” I panicked.
As much as I knew I had feelings for him, I could not be his girlfriend right now. My feelings were all over the place and I didn’t want to use him to heal from my troubles. “You don’t have to accept him. I really just wanted to know if he would do it,” Eve said, taking my hand and leading me downstairs.
Once we were in the open area, Arthur walked over to the centre of the room. A waiter was about to walk by, but he grabbed the glass and emptied the contents before speaking. “Your attention, everyone,” he said.
Almost instantly, all eyes turned to him. “You wouldn’t dare, Arthur,” Maria said with gritted teeth.
“Watch me,” Arthur said. “I have never liked you and I never would like you. My father fixed the engagement, but I never accepted it”
“Do you believe him?” Eve said beside me.
“I don’t know,” I dropped my head.
Eve chuckled. “You do,” she said, staring with an obvious expression.
“I do,” I reluctantly admitted. “I know I should not, but I trust him. It scares me,”
Vance, on the outside, was the perfect person to trust. He was nice, sweet and everything I wanted, but in the end, my trust and love were dashed after only just a year of our marriage.
He took a complete three sixty on me and I was yet to recover from it even though I was far away from him now. And now, I was feeling the same for Arthur, if not worse. Despite his usual reputation, I still trusted him.
I really needed to hate myself for it. “You are right to believe him,” Eve said, and my eyes widened.
“You think he is saying the truth?” I asked.
She hummed. “He is. Their proof was not very convincing. Arthur looked both annoyed and uncomfortable in that video. It’s clear he didn’t want to be close to her. What you should be worried about is why he endured it,”
“Sierra,” Arthur called, bringing our attention back to him. He was now on his knees, staring at me with a soft gaze that made my heart flutter. “I love you. A lot. From the moment I set my eyes on you only a few weeks ago, I fell head over heels for you,” he confessed, every word sinking into my mind.
Like a child, I felt like jumping and screaming, but I held myself back, darting my eyes around as I found the words to say. “I…”
“You don’t need to say anything right now. And this is not to pressure you either, but I hope you can give me a chance to proof my love for you,” he said, rising.
“Aww,” the crowd chorused.
I smiled, nodding. “You will regret this, Arthur,” Maria said, stomping out of the restaurant.
Arthur ignored her, his gaze fixed on me. “I have something planned for us today. Can we go?” he gave out his hand for me to take.
Eve stepped in between us. “I need to spend some time with my friend before you take her so you’ll have to wait your turn, biker,” she said, taking my hand.
I didn’t argue as she led me back to the balcony. “You’re being mean,” I said.
“And you’re being soft-hearted. I need to test his patience at least,” Eve said, motioning for me to seat.
We chatted for a while. Eve made sure to bring up conversations that had nothing to do with Arthur and my complicated life choices. I didn’t know how long I had missed her company until right now.
I barely had friends back in the city and it somehow affected Elvis as well. I was completely focused on my family with Vance and did not think of what would happen to me without my friends around me.
“You seem to love him already,” Eve said suddenly. “Why don’t you just go ahead with the relationship?”
I sighed. “I might be making the same mistake again,” I said. “I fell in love with Vance, and my life got ruined in the end.”
“He doesn’t seem like that kind of guy,”
“Vance didn’t, as well. More reason I need to be scared,” I said. “And I don’t think I am cut out for his world. Arthur’s life must be filled with parties, high-class events, wealth and everything I cannot measure up to.”
“Did Vance put all that in your head?” Eve asked, then sighed. “Listen, Vance is a jerk. I told you he was, but you didn’t listen. Whatever he must have made you believe about yourself, throw it all away because they are wrong. You are back and you need to start a new life, maybe not with Arthur but something.”
She leaned in. “Life is tough, Sierra, but you can’t let it win. Look at me, we live in this bullshit, yet I make the best of it,”
“You’re different from me,” I told her. She was tougher than I was.
“I might be, but that doesn’t mean you can’t either. Fine, don’t get into a relationship with him. Have fun with him. Take it as a revenge for all the guys out there that are shits,”
“You sure know how to give terrible advice,” I muttered.
“I agree, but give him a chance and maybe with time you can will know what to do. And maybe you can heal through this.”
“How can I do that?”
“First, stand up for your fucking self!”
