                    Sierra’s POV
One step into the house and I spotted Arthur talking into his phone with his back to me in the living room. “Arthur?” I called.
He snapped his head to me, quickly ending the call with a smile to me. “Hey, did I make you all wait long?” he said, walking over to me.
I shook my head. “They have all gone. I’m the only one waiting. Is there a problem?” I asked, glancing down at the phone in his hand.
Arthur shook his head, sliding his phone into his pocket as he led me out. “There is no problem. Only needed to get something done,” he said.
I nodded as we walked to his car. The ride was quiet for the first few minutes until his phone started ringing. He took it out of his pocket and placed it in the phone holder. It kept ringing, but Arthur made no move to answer it.
A few texts flooded in, but he didn’t check it. “I’m sorry. We should listen to some music,” he said, turning up the music.
“Won’t you answer? It’s your Mum,” I said.
I wasn’t exactly sure what relationship he had with his mother, but it seemed not to be a good one. For some reason, he only got moody each time the call came through. The text messages were conveniently ignored as well.
“Are you avoiding your family because of me?” I asked, unable to contain it.
He shook his head, heaving a sigh. “I’m sorry that they keep disturbing,” he said.
“That’s not want I’m saying,” I told him.
“I’m not avoiding them. I just don’t need to spend time with them,” he said.
“Why? They are your family, after all. I really do not want to come in between you and them. I can spend time with my family while you spend time with yours,”
Arthur slammed the brakes as another call came through. He picked up his phone and turned it off. “You aren’t coming in between us. They never acted like my family, so trying now is useless. I only had one family, and he is gone,” he responded, tossing his phone in the glove box.
For the first time, I actually felt him being reluctant to speak about something. But I was curious. “And who is that?” I asked.
He resumed moving again. “My grandfather. He died a few years ago. He was the only reason I could stand my parents. Now he is gone so he can’t sugarcoat things to get me to be with them, especially during this time of the year,” he said.
I shrugged. “Maybe they’ve changed,”
“No, they want something,” he said, then continued, but it sounded more like he was speaking to himself than to me. “I am not sure what just yet, and I know I would hate it.”
He then sighed. “There’s no reason to be worried about them. They love it when I am away.”
It did not sound like it, but I would not pry into his family matters. We arrived at the venue and as expected, not only was the landscape filled with snow, it was filled with people.
Fortunately, I was with the host, or I would not have found my family easily. “Finally, you two decided to join us,” Mum winked at me.
I could only shake my head with an embarrassed smile. “Come, we need to distribute these before they get cold,” Mum said, handing us different packs of snacks.
While handing out the snacks, I noticed how some ladies kept smiling from ear to ear, eager to take the snacks Arthur handed out to them. I rolled my eyes as I turned my attention back to the couple in front of me, giving them a warm smile.
I returned to Mum, grabbed some more snacks and headed for some other couple, but I could not help but notice Arthur yet again with that smile of his that could make any lady want him.
I rolled my eyes again. For the thirty minutes of sharing snacks, I could not count how much I had rolled my eyes. It’s a surprise how my eyes were not aching yet. I returned to mum to grab the last of the snacks when he came to my side as well.
“Done flirting?” my tongue beat my brain to conceal what I was thinking.
“Huh?” Arthur asked.
I had already said it. There was no going back now, so I faced him. Nudging my head to the ladies, still giggling like teenagers, I spoke, “Isn’t that your doing?” I said.
“I just handed out snacks,”
“Yes, with a huge smile,” I kept going.
“I don’t think they would want to take it if I frown though,” he said, then took the snacks in my hand. “But I’ll try,”
He walked over to some other ladies and just as he said; he didn’t smile and handed it over. However, the complete opposite of what we thought— I wanted happened. The ladies took it with even more reddened faces as they giggled among themselves.
It seemed it was not just his smiles, but his face as well that attracted them. He turned to me, his smile returning, but my gaze was more focused on the ladies behind him, fawning over him from a distance. It seemed they did not have the courage to approach him.
Before he could take a step towards me, they rounded him.
I spoke too soon.
One grabbed his arm, smiling into his face like a flirt. Arthur smiled at them as he tried to step away, but they seemed to be really keen on keeping him there. Just when I thought he could finally get away from them, another lady seemed to have lost her footing, stumbling just in front of Arthur’s path.
And like the hero he was, Arthur wrapped his hand around his waist, stopping her from reaching the ground. All the other ladies giggled while the one in Arthur’s arms reached out to touch his face. I finally snapped and matched over.
