Sierra’s POV
Without thinking, I grabbed Arthur by the arm and marched out of the circle. Arthur gave them a warm smile as he joined me out. “What was that about?” I asked, almost in a yell.
“Distributing snacks,” he replied, his tone almost amused.
“And it involved holding a lady’s waist, huh?”
“She was heading for the ground. I could not let that happen.”
“You know she did that on purpose. And why did you even have to give out the snacks to ladies? I handed out mine to couples,”
He took a step forward, locking eyes with me. “I’m sensing something here,” he said.
“What?” I asked, taking a step back.
He grabbed my waist, pulling me in. “You’re jealous,” he smirked.
“I’m not,” I muttered, looking away.
He pinched my chin, forcing me to look at him. “Then why are you mad I held some girl’s waist?”
He was teasing me. I knew it. I could not be jealous. I wasn’t. “It’s not jealousy,” I defended.
“Then what could it be?” he asked.
For a moment, I had no idea what to call what and why I did what I did. It wasn’t as though he was doing anything inappropriate. “Let go,” I tried to get his hands off my waist.
“Arthur,” a lady walked over to us, her arms across her chest.
Only then did Arthur let go. “Who is she?” the lady asked.
“Is she your girlfriend?” another lady joined in, a smile on her face with the others that joined, scrutinizing me with dagger gazes.
“We aren’t dating,” I responded, adjusting my jacket.
“I told you,” another girl slapped the one at her side on the arm playfully. “Arthur could never go for that,”
And that there… reminded me of my place. I wasn’t even sure what was wrong with me. I had no right doing what I did. Coming in between Arthur and the ladies that wanted to have something to do with him was not in my place.
“Excuse me,” I said, heading back to our spot.
I avoided the ladies’ gazes. Arthur could spend time with them and I would try to remember my place. “Always remember your place.” Vance’s voice came yet again in my head.
Strange how he said that when I wanted to stand up as his wife but I learned to realize my place was where he placed me and right now, Arthur could not place me on any high pedestal in his life.
“You could have told them you are my girlfriend, you know,” Arthur said beside me, making me halt.
I looked back at the ladies, who were still staring at me like I stole something from them. “Why would I lie?” I asked, still staring at them.
“It would have gotten them off my back. I thought that’s what you wanted,” Arthur said.
“I don’t… want it,” I responded, reluctant.
That was a lie. I wanted them to back off at that moment and right now, a small part of me still wanted that, but I knew it was not right. Arthur held my chin, forcing me to look at him.
“Your actions said something else,” he said.
“Forget I did anything. You can go back to them.” I tried to walk off, but he held me by the waist, pulling me back.
I wiggled, trying to get him to let go. “Let go. There are people watching,” I said.
“Those ladies are watching,” I added.
Instead of pulling away, he nibbled on my ear. “Perfect. Then I can show them what I truly like,” he whispered, his hot breath sending shivers down my spine.
He finally let go, but I felt my cheeks burn. Rolling my eyes, I headed back to where Mum and Dad sat with Elvis. Elvis got up with a huge bag. “Elvis, what’s that?” I asked.
With a mischievous smile, he reached into the bag and brought a snow ball, tossing it at Arthur. “You want to a snow fight, little rascal?” Arthur asked, already grabbing a handful of snow.
“Snow fights are-”
Before Jackson could finish, a snow ball landed on his face. “Good throw, Uncle Arthur,” Elvis laughed, as they both gave themselves a high five.
Jackson got up from where he sat. “You want a fight? You on,” he said, already molding a snow ball.
“Mommy, would you play?” Elvis said.
“Riri, join them. We’ll watch,” Dad urged.
I nodded. “We’ll split into two groups. I will be Sierra’s team,” Jackson said, coming to my side.
“Get ready to lose, Mommy,” Elvis said, handing his bag of snowballs to Arthur.
It seemed Elvis had been keeping himself busy all this while. Jackson threw a snowball at Arthur and I found myself digging for more snow. A snow ball came at me and I blocked it with my arm.
Arthur winked at me, and just as he turned, I threw one at his head. He turned around with surprise spread across his face. The game was filled with laughter and unaimed throws. A few other families joined in, making it even more lively, and Mum and Dad were no exception.
I threw another ball, and it landed on Jackson. “Hey! I’m on your team!” he yelled.
“Sorry!” I yelled back, apologetic, as another came flying my way.
I dodged it successfully, running to find some place to hide from the flying snowballs here and there. I found cover behind a tree, watching the others as they played. Elvis, for one, looked happy playing.
That smile on his face warmed my heart. I loved it. I found myself laughing as a snowball hit Jackson’s face. He sure was getting a lot of hits, just like I remembered when we were little.
I cannot remember when last I laughed this hard. I stayed behind the tree, catching my breath. I hadn’t done this much running and laughing in a while. When I felt relaxed enough to join them again, I grabbed a handful of snow and headed out, but I was grabbed before I could take even a step forward.
I snapped my head over my shoulder and found Arthur holding my arm, barely able to keep his eyes open.
