Arthur’s POV
The door bell rang downstairs, and I sluggishly opened my eyes, staring at the bedroom door. My eyelids were heavy. Keeping them open felt like a chore. I dragged my eyes to the wall clock, and it was almost noon.
I pushed myself up from the bed as the doorbell rang again. When I chose to leave the resort suite to my penthouse, I didn’t think someone was going to make me hate it. Pushing myself off the bed, I walked out of my bedroom.
“Good morning, Mr. Floyd,” Sarah, the housekeeper, greeted with a small bow.
Sarah was over fifty, but she has chosen to continue working despite me giving her an offer of a good severance pay. Fortunately, I could stand her and she respects my rules perfectly. She was only meant to be around once a week, but due to my illness, she has been forced to stay another day.
I hummed, helping myself down the stairs. “Go check who is at the door?” I said, taking a seat on the couch.
“You look like shit,” was Neil’s good morning to me.
He plopped on the couch beside me, tossing a document and a little bag on the table. “Should I get you breakfast, Mr. Floyd?” Sarah asked, and I nodded.
“Seems you found someone to replace your mother,” Neil commented, watching Sarah leave.
“Shut the fuck up,” I said, irritated.
“Anyway, I got you some medicine. Take them and stop looking like you would pass out at any minute. There’s only two days to Christmas and you’re falling sick,” he tsked. “Childish,” he muttered.
I knew that. Others had home sickness when they were away from family, but somehow mine was the opposite. I felt better far away and the moment I stayed longer than an hour with my family; I feel sick.
Yet, I stayed two days with them, which ultimately led me to feeling sick. Only two days of not sleeping and I feel like I was close to losing my life. It just had to happen only a few days before Christmas.
“Did you do what I asked?” I picked up the document on the table, flipping it open.
Neil hummed. “I did. Sent the money a few hours ago. You’re doing a lot for her, you know. What if she doesn’t appreciate it?”
“I don’t need her appreciation. I need her to get her spark back,” I said.
“And if it doesn’t work?”
I stayed silent. If it doesn’t work, I would have to think of something else. “You know, I just don’t get it. She is not your typical go-to lady, so why are you so into her? Does she have something on you? You two have fucked. I thought this obsession of yours will be over by now,” Neil said.
“It’s not an obsession and you should speak of her with respect,” I told him.
“Getting protective already. Tell me, are you two dating? Is she forcing you?”
“Like anyone could force me to date them.” I rolled my eyes.
“Except your dad,” he teased.
“So you are telling me you are really in love with her? Don’t you think she isn’t cut out for your world? Your exes were confident, yet not all of them could stand the heat. Sierra is not bold enough to stand the turmoil of your life,”
That has been my many worries. I loved her and I wanted to be with her, but there was a lot always going on in my life. Sierra wasn’t very confident in herself. Despite her short bursts of confidence, it always got deflated easily, but I wasn’t planning on backing down.
I knew she had it in her. Her ex-husband ruined a lot of her confidence, but I would get it back up. Permanently. First, I would have to use her paintings. Sneakily taking pictures of her paintings and giving her a good copyright and publication was just the beginning of what I had planned to get her to destroy that shell of hers.
“It’s not for you to worry about,” I told Neil.
“Yeah, whatever. I wonder when Mum would be here,” Neil said, looking at the time.
“Why would she be here?” I asked.
“Her son is sick, obviously,”
“You fucking told her?!”
“What? She asked where you were and I had to tell her,”
I folded my fists, trying to suppress my anger. Neil always knew how to set me off. He was like my mother’s lap dog, spilling everything without a hold. So far, he hasn’t told them about Sierra, which was one of his saving graces.
The other was the fact that I had a use of him or he would have been disposed off a long time ago. “I told you not to tell them,” I said.
“I didn’t tell them. I told your Mum,”
He was so close to receiving a punch from me. What really was the difference between telling just my mum and them both? “Water, Mr. Floyd,” Sarah brought a glass of water to me.
I tossed the document on the table, squeezing the bridge of my nose. Once I took the glass, Sarah helped me with my medicines. “The food is ready, Mr. Floyd,” she said.
“I’ll be there in a minute,” I told her, and she left the room.
“Come on, dude. You don’t have to be mad. Fine, why don’t I stop her?” he said, taking out his phone from his pocket.
Did he really think that was going to stop my mother? My mother was always ready to burst into my house like I was an intruder, just to ensure she got to me. “Just shut up,” I said as the doorbell rang.
My heart dropped as I knew who it was. “I’ll handle it,” Neil shot up the couch, quickly heading for the door.
Whatever he planned to do, it was definitely not going to stop my mother. Except it wasn’t her. Sierra came running, barely stopping before her lips crashed on mine.
