Sierra's POV
Carol's party was just as I expected — loud music, fancy dresses, expensive cologne and perfumes, models and everything one would consider refined.
There were a few people who didn't fit into this category and I was the number one on that list. Even though Arthur helped me change into something more fancy, I felt out a place.
It was hard to get used to these gatherings, but I had a little advantage; Arthur. The confidence I had gathered while being with him was enough to get me to sit at a table, but that was it.
I could not utter a word. Plus, all they were saying was something I could barely relate to. “Your drink, my lady,” Arthur said, placing a glass of wine before me on the table, shooting me a bright smile.
The eyes of every female on the table turned to him. He didn't seem to mind. Arthur leaned into my ear, his fingers wrapped around the side of my neck. “I'm being called over. Do you need me to stay?” his tone low.
My body reacted, conscious of him in a way I couldn't say in public. It took me a moment to get myself together, then I shook my head. “You can go,” I said, my voice hoarse from my suppressed need.
As though he knew, he kissed me. His lips were gentle yet enticing on mine. He pulled away, then winked. “I'll be back,” he said, leaving the table.
My cheeks burned red from this encounter, and I could not hide it. His punishment didn't seem to be a punishment anymore with how casual he was taking it.
I grabbed my drink and took a sip, trying to hide my blush. When I raised my eyes, all the ladies at the table had their eyes on me.
Arthur had wanted to stay. I had the opportunity to say yes, but I didn't. I knew with him here I would feel comfortable, but he would not be around always and so I needed to be able to stay around others without feeling small.
I half expected them to continue speaking among themselves, but then they directed their discussion around me.
“You two seem close,” one of them broke the silence. “Dating?” she asked.
I took a sip of my wine as a blonde tapped the first lady softly. “Arthur cannot date her,” she said, giving me a fake soft smile. “Tell me what's your relationship with him,”
“Not something that will interest you,” I said, taking another sip.
They all chuckled, glancing at themselves. “Definitely not dating then,” another said with a big, mocking smile.
To my surprise, I didn't feel intimidated by that, nor did I feel small. I glanced down at my drink. Could be it? “You do know Arthur's only using you, right? Whatever you two have is the one way to get more ladies fawning over him.”
That was a possibility, but all I needed to do was accept that it was all a game and it'll be fine, right? My eyes found Arthur. He was speaking with some men and a lady walked over, swaying her hips like the seductress she very well looks.
She smiled sweetly at Arthur, and her fingers found its way to his chest. Quickly, I averted my gaze, and I took sight of Maria staring down at me from the balcony.
“Does it hurt?” I heard one of the ladies at the table say.
A smile came on my face, not for them but for Maria, who looked like she was about to burn me alive with her eyes. She moved away, her eyes sending a message.
“No,” I replied to the ladies. I only glanced down for a second and found the ladies looking at me like I said something out of the ordinary.
I didn't pay them any mind. “Excuse me,” I said, getting on my feet.
I headed up the stairs, and just at the top did Maria step out. “I knew you would come,” she said.
“I knew you'll be jealous,” I said with my lips crooked.
The anger in Maria's eyes only burned fiercer now. Right now, I didn't care if I was drunk and acting this way or Arthur has washed on me some confidence of his. Either way, I would embrace it.
Maria smiled, finally recovering from her shock from earlier. “You really got guts, Sierra,” she said, and I nodded.
“I'm glad you figured it out,” I said, and now there were veins on each side of her head.
Lovely, really.
She couldn't take half of what she and her friends had done to me for weeks since I returned. At least I knew how to rile her up, aside from getting close to Arthur.
Revenge sure is sweet.
“You are having fun right now, but I know it would only last a moment. You know why? Arthur cannot be interested in someone like you,” she said.
“Yet he is still around me,” I said with a smile, taking a step forward.
Maria stepped back, eyes cautious. “So tell me, what has made him stay around me for so long?” I asked.
“That's because he...” she paused, looking around.
“He finds me interesting?” I tried to help her.
“No, because you are a simple whore that he can fuck and get rid of soon,” she said, folding her arms to seem defiant.
“Well, I heard about the video Arthur posted that almost ruined your career. Doesn't that make you a bigger whore than me? Yet, he still doesn't find you interesting. Sit with that, Maria. You are alone right now,” I said, watching the blood drain from her face.
I knew Yvonne has been forced to return to the city and Shelly has been arrested for a week now. Whatever Arthur and Jackson were doing, I was glad.
Due to all that, Maria's minions have stepped back a bit. Now, we were just one and one in this fight, if I could call it that.
Gotten enough of her shocked expression, I turned around to get down the stairs and to the party.
But mid taking a step, I felt a hard push to my back, and I missed my step.
