Trent narrated everything that happened after we split up that night, and I listen with rapt attention.
"So you ended up fighting a bear off?" I asked, after he told me the whole story, and he shrugged.
"Not necessarily, I just tried staring clear of me. I couldn't actually fight it because I had Daisy in my arms and she was already squirming from fear, I can still remember the look in her eyes too," Trent muttered, and j placed a hand on his shoulder and gave it a squeeze.
"You're both okay now, it's all in the past," I said, as a form of reassurance and I saw his shoulders straighten up a bit.
A thought struck my mind and my brows furrowed.
"What are you thinking about?" I turned over only to be met with Trent's curious gaze already roaming across my face.
"About what you just said, it doesn't make sense. It isn't bear season so why would you see one so far away from where it's supposed to be." His lips part slightly, and I watch as his eyes dart across the room as he thinks.
"I have no idea honestly, it seemed strange to me too but I didn't dwell much on it then because my priority was keeping Willow safe. And after we got here, I forgot about it entirely because I was swept up with settling into the pack till further notice."
"Do you think there's foul play involved? Like bears are being hunted now?" He shrugged again.
"I'm not sure. I did ask about it when I first got here but no one knows either. And after I just let it go and continued playing the waiting game."
I stared at him, confused. "Waiting game?"
"I was waiting for you. If Daisy hadn't been here I would have ventured back in that forest to look for you."
His words hit me, and I felt my lips tug into a smile of their own free will.
"That's so sweet of you."
"I had to find you, so I could tell at you for playing a Samaritan that night," he said, of course he would say something like that. "You have no idea what I felt when I saw you veer away from our path," he added again and I sighed.
"It was my way of trying to protect you."
"I know. But I still felt helpless that I was of no use."
"Don't talk about yourself like that, you've been one of the greatest people I've meant since... For a long time really." I caught myself before slipping out that I had woken up two years back. It was still a secret I was guarding with my life and I wasn't sure if I would ever share it with anyone.
"Thanks," he smiled, then sighed.
We sat in silence for all of them seconds before Trent broke it again.
"Trini told me you were attacked by some wolves who were sent out to get you."
I swallowed, remembering how they were hunting me down and circling me like I was prey. Their taunting laughs and remarks echoed in my mind and I shuddered. Trent noticed and squeezed my hand, as if to remind me that I was no longer in that forest.
"I was. I don't think I would have gotten away if Luciano and his Beta hadn't saved me," I told him.
"When I heard about it, I so badly wanted to come and see you. Hell, I even wanted to break into the damned pack hospital without a care but Trini stopped me."
"She stopped you? I thought stuff like that was right up her alley."
"It is but that when the consequences aren't dire. She told me that I could get kicked out of the pack since I wasn't officially a member yet, so I had to rethink my decision for Daisy's case. I don't want her to grow up a rogue because of my own decisions."
There it was, the Trent who was ready to do anything for his family and the people he cared about.
"Hence, the waiting game for you to be strong enough to get out of there," he paused, then added again, "and man did you take you sweet time recovering."
"Hey, I was in really bad shape and bedridden. If it makes you feel better I didn't see anyone too because Luciano placed me in an isolated ward," I defended and he hummed.
In the blink of an eye, his thoughtful expression morphed into a smirk.
"Luciano huh?" He teased, and my eyes widened. Shit. I really needed to watch how I called his name so easily because the pack members would start suspecting something was up. Maya and Trini probably already thought as much.
"You have to take care to not call his name out so recklessly because you'll get stares from the pack," Trent stated, confirming my thoughts. I would have to watch my tongue if I wanted to fit in.
"Hey, you've mentioned a few times about joining the pack officially, do you think it would be that easy?"
"The Beta spoke to me and said Alpha Luciano is willing to agree and offer solace because of our situation, so yeah, it's that easy."
"Then why haven't you gone through the whole process already? I mean, you already have a room here and everything so what's stopping you?... Me?"
"That and... The fact that the Alpha isn't in the pack currently."
My eyebrows shot up. "Really?" Trini or Maya hadn't mentioned Luciano not being around before, and here I thought I would see him again soon. My mood soured and I breathed out heavily.
"Really. He has been unavailable since he brought you back here." That was even more surprising and it got my eyebrows up to my hairline. Where could Luciano have gone all this while?
"Huh, I didn't know," I answered absentmindedly, my mind already running away from me and reeling with possibilities of where he could have gone.
"You know you never told me what happened after wee separated that night, we've just been taking about what happened to me," Trent said, and I think he said it deliberately slow to give me time to process if I wanted to tell him anything or not.
"True. It's a long story though."
Trent glanced at the clock, then captured my gaze again.
"We have all afternoon. Shoot."
