It had been three days of having almost freedom. Or as free as could be with having four pairs of eyes staring at you all day.
The guard in charge, Nicholas, my Father had called him, had come back from wherever he had gone to.
He had been gone for two days and I knew my father didn't offer leaves of absence. He wasn't lenient like that. Something in my gut told me that Nicky boy's absence was unauthorized.
But I wasn't telling my father that. I could always use that information for later.
I steeled my mind as I walked to my father's office. I would find out whether my father would keep his word or if he was as two faced as I thought him to be.
The guards stayed outside the door as I walked from the drawing room to the main office and knocked.
Breathe in... Out, I told myself.
I couldn't let him get to me. Not again.
I rolled my no longer gauzed up arm and sighed. Doctor Carl had been right about me healing fast. I had gotten the cast off the morning after the laundry day since it didn't hurt anymore.
I ran my fingers over the unblemished skin of my arm then curled it into my side and waited.
My father's voice boomed when he told me to come in and I swallowed. I chided myself right after.
I needed to get over my fear of him.
He wasn't behind his desk this time, but in a couch in a corner of the office. He beckoned me over and I came, stopping a few feet away from him and staring into his eyes.
His eyes didn't give anything away but I could tell he was pleased with himself. The way his lips curled up told me that much.
"You don't waste any time do you?" I pressed my lips together, and when he realized I wasn't going to respond, he carried on.
"Well, you've been exceptionally good so I don't see why I should deny you what you want. So, which guard do you choose?" He asked and I stopped for a moment.
Was it that easy? Or was he simply playing me?
He hadn't gone his usual route of fuck around and find out types of threats or tried to scare me into submission like he often did.
"Still thinking?" He asked, breaking me away from my train of thought.
"I... Don't know who to choose." I let out then watched him roll his eyes in annoyance.
"You're not a child Wyn, so make a choice before I make one for you." He growled and I took a step back.
I lied. I knew exactly who I wanted to choose but I didn't want to look suspicious about it. Not with my father acting out of character today.
"I choose the youngest one then. I'm not comfortable with those oldies watching me so closely." I made up an excuse on the fly.
"Hmm, what's his name anyway? Tray? Troy?" My father looked at me expectantly and I knew he was testing me, waiting for some sort of slip up.
I shrugged my shoulders and his eyes roamed over my face before he looked away from me.
"Fine, you can leave. I've already linked the rest that they are no longer needed." He waved his hand dismissively and I let out a small breath in relief.
I was half way to the door when he called behind me.
"Oh, and don't think about doing anything stupid because I will know."
I didn't turn back.
"And do well to make our deal a success." He added and I gave him a slight nod.
My shoulders sagged immediately the door closed behind me.
I couldn't help the smile that grew on my face when I met only the gentle faced guard waiting outside the office.
"Ma'am, I'm honored you chose me." He said then bowed his head.
"Ma'am," I choked out with a small laugh.
"Call me Wyn. Ma'am makes me sound like a fifty- year- old widowed shewolf." I let out and he gave me a snort.
"And I'm Trent, if you care to know."
"I know."
I waited until he fell into step beside me as we made our way outside the pack house.
"You... Do?" He couldn't hide the shock in his voice as he asked.
"Yep, your sister told me. Not Daisy, the older one."
"You mean Willow, that's surprising because she's usually very quiet but she can be quite the talker if put under the right circumstances or if she talks to someone she's comfortable with and I'm talking too much so I'll just stop now." He said all in one breath and I laughed.
His ears turned a vivid shade of pink and he looked away from me.
"She's not the only yapper in the family, that's for sure." I said and his ears went a darker shade of pink. If that was even possible.
The garden was empty today, and peaceful. I took a seat and practically forced Trent to sit beside me. I don't know why he was hellbent on being the best guard ever but I succeeded eventually.
I found out he was twenty- two and responsible for both of his sisters. His parents had been mates so it was no surprise when his Dad had died soon after his mom had passed away from giving birth to Daisy. Some mates just couldn't bear the loss of their other half.
They had all been omegas at the time, but things had gone from bad to worse since they were young and without protection from their parents.
He had joined the guards because aside from the warriors and some doctors, they offered the higest pay and he wanted his sisters to have the best life possible.
He wanted to be a warrior but they had told him he was an omega and wasn't strong enough to defend the pack. So he had to settle for second best.
But I knew that was another bullshit rule my father had created because he despised anything that didn't show immediate power. He was obsessed with it.
"What was Daisy doing in the garden that day?" I asked.
I now knew Willow was a laundry maid so I wondered who Daisy was with that day.
