Trini's Pov.
I woke up slowly, the warmth of my blankets making it hard to leave the bed. I blinked a few times, letting my eyes adjust to the dim morning light filtering through the small gaps in my window. For a moment, I just lay there, staring at the ceiling, letting my thoughts drift. But the moment didn’t last long. There was work to be done.
With a small sigh, I pushed myself up, sitting on the edge of the bed. I ran my fingers through my messy hair, shaking off the last traces of sleep. My bare feet touched the cold floor, sending a small shiver up my spine. The chill made me move faster, standing and stretching before walking over to the window.
I unlatched it and pushed it open, letting the fresh morning air rush in. The scent of dew-covered grass filled the room, crisp and clean. I closed my eyes for a moment, inhaling deeply. It was one of my favorite parts of the morning—those few minutes where everything felt still, before the day truly began.
After a while, I moved away from the window and gathered my things for a bath. I made my way to the washroom, the cool stone floor making me quicken my steps. The water was lukewarm, but it was refreshing, waking me up completely. I scrubbed my skin clean, letting the water wash away any lingering sleepiness. Once I was done, I brushed my teeth, then dried myself off before slipping into my dress—a simple, comfortable maud dress that hugged my frame just right.
I stood in front of the small mirror in my room, adjusting the fabric, then, almost absentmindedly, I spun around a few times. The dress flared out slightly, and for just a brief moment, I imagined myself dancing with Victor. His hand on my waist, the warmth of his touch—it felt so real, like I could reach out and grab it.
I stopped suddenly, my cheeks heating up. “What am I doing?” I muttered, shaking my head as if to clear the thought away. This wasn’t the time for silly daydreams. With a deep breath, I straightened my dress and sighed, pushing the feeling away.
There was work to be done.
Leaving my room, I walked towards the supply room, my footsteps light against the wooden floor. I reached the door and pushed it open, stepping inside to gather everything I needed—soaps, rags, a broom, and a bucket. Once I had everything, I filled the bucket with soapy water, then carefully carried it back to my room.
The first thing I did was clean my own space. I moved efficiently, scrubbing the floors, wiping down the furniture, making sure every single corner was spotless. I didn’t stop until my room smelled fresh, the scent of lavender and citrus filling the air. I took a deep breath, letting the clean scent settle around me before locking my door behind me.
Next was the male dormitory.
I had a long day ahead—five rooms to clean, and Trent’s was one of them. I had saved his for last. I smiled to myself at the thought. If I timed it right, I’d have a little extra time to spend with him.
I started with the first room, moving through it quickly, making sure not a single spot was missed. Then I moved on to the next, and the next, losing myself in the rhythm of cleaning. Hours passed in a blur, each room left sparkling and fresh. By the time I was done with the fourth room, my arms ached slightly, but I didn’t mind. There was just one more left.
Trent’s room.
I wiped my forehead and let out a small breath. “Alright. Just one more,” I said softly, smiling to myself.
With renewed energy, I walked towards his room and knocked lightly. I waited, but there was no answer. Frowning slightly, I knocked again. Still nothing.
Curious, I slowly pushed the door open and stepped inside. The room was empty. In fact, all the male servants’ rooms were empty.
My shoulders slumped slightly in disappointment. I had hoped to see Trent, maybe talk to him for a while. But he wasn’t here.
With a small sigh, I shook off the feeling and got to work.
I moved carefully, making sure to clean every surface thoroughly. I took extra care with his things, wanting to leave the room looking perfect. Maybe he’d notice. Maybe he’d appreciate it.
I was so focused that I didn’t hear the footsteps behind me until a voice spoke up.
“You could use some help.”
I jumped slightly, turning quickly to see Trent standing in the doorway, arms crossed over his chest, a smirk tugging at his lips.
“Trent!” I scolded, placing a hand over my chest. “You scared me.”
He chuckled, stepping inside. “Didn’t mean to.”
I rolled my eyes but couldn’t help the small smile forming on my lips. “What are you doing here? I thought you were out.”
“I was,” he said, leaning against the wall. “But I saw you working hard, figured I’d lend a hand.”
I raised a brow. “Oh? And since when do you help with cleaning?”
He shrugged. “Since now.”
I laughed softly. “Alright then, if you’re serious, grab a rag.”
Trent grinned and did as I said, taking one from the pile. He joined me, wiping down the desk while I continued sweeping the floor. For a while, we worked in comfortable silence, the occasional glance exchanged between us.
After a while, he spoke again. “You always work this hard?”
I shrugged. “Someone has to.”
He studied me for a moment before smirking. “You’re kind of amazing, you know that?”
I felt my cheeks heat up but quickly turned away, pretending to focus on the floor. “Don’t flatter me, Trent.”
“I’m serious.”
I risked a glance at him, and the way he was looking at me—like I was something special—made my stomach flutter. I quickly looked away, clearing my throat.
“Well, if you’re serious, you can prove it by actually cleaning properly,” I teased.
He laughed. “Alright, alright. I’ll put in my best effort.”
We continued working together, the room slowly becoming cleaner, but neither of us really paying attention to the task anymore. It was just nice—being here, with him, sharing this quiet moment.
By the time we finished, I felt lighter, as if the weight of the day had lifted just a little.
Maybe today wasn’t so bad after all.
