"Do you want me to leave or-"
"No you can stay. I'm fine now." I told him after I had calmed down.
"So do you want to talk about something else?" He questioned as he sat beside me on the bed. The chair he had placed in front of it abandoned.
"What would we talk about?" I quipped and Trent's face changed to a thoughtful look.
"I don't know, there's so many things to dis-"
"Do you have a girlfriend?" I blurted out all of a sudden and my cheeks reddened at my words. Trent had matching pink cheeks and he gave me an embarrassed smile.
"Sorry, you don't have to answer that, it just came to my mind since you spend all day with me and-" I rambled on, then stopped when he shook his head.
"I don't... I want to wait for my mate." He said quietly with his head bowed.
"What's wrong? Why do you sound sad all of a sudden?"
"What if she doesn't like me?" He let out.
"Your mate? Trent, I don't think that is possible."
"No, I mean, what if she doesn't like what I am?" He corrected me and I immediately knew he was talking about the fact that he was an omega.
Trent was a happy go lucky kind of guy who wanted to do his best to take care of his sisters but even the happiest person had something they were insecure about. And for Trent, it was the fact that he was an omega that made him feel inferior.
"You're a wonderful guy and if she's going to judge you based on the labels boring old Alphas made then she doesn't deserve you." I told him and I meant every word of what I said.
"Have I told you you have a way of lifting my spirits when I'm down?" He asked and I could see a glimpse of that happy go lucky guy under his sad exterior.
"No. I do?"
"You do, anytime I'm down." He finished softly and I flashed him a smile.
"You're welcome."
Sunlight filtered into my bedroom letting me know that it was mid day and i dragged Trent out to get something from the kitchen.
Hunger gnawed my stomach and it only intensified when I got a whiff of whatever dish the maids had prepared.
The kitchen, as usual had several maids and other members of staff either cooking, eating or having plain conversation.
When they noticed me, their voices dropped which was also usual but what was unusual was having them look at me with... Respect?
I grabbed a plate and put some pasta on it and Trent followed suit before following me to a sitting area to eat.
"Hey, I've been meaning to ask you, do you know what's up with the maids and the others? They have been looking at me weird all week." I said then gave Trent a shove when he wouldn't stop stuffing his face with the pasta.
"Sorry, the pasta is just really good today." He commented and I had to nod my head in agreement as I moaned at the creamy flavour that hit my tongue.
"Well?" I pressed.
"They had a change of heart after they found out that you stood up for my sister."
"Really?"
"Yeah. Daisy is a sweetheart around here and everyone sees her as their own. So they were pleasantly surprised when a member of the Alpha family defended her." Trent explained.
"But anyone would have done what I did." I said and Trent shook his head.
"Not anyone. You would be surprised how cruel people can be when their rank is above yours." Trent said in a low voice. His jaw set in a hard line and I didn't need him to tell me that that had happened before. Probably a lot of times too.
"Who?" I whispered, my voice breathy.
"Mostly warriors and guards. Warriors especially harass Willow and try to order her around when they find out that she's a laundry maid. And I can't do anything about it because my rank is not high enough. Some guards also try to give me a tough time because I'm an omega but I can handle them. Willow can't." He answered, his jaw ticking with sheer rage.
Someone like Trent was very protective of his sisters and those close to him, so I knew it killed him that he couldn't do much to help his sisters.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know." I whispered, not having anything else to say.
But moon goddess help me, I was going to deal with said warriors and guards if given the chance. I wondered if my father knew anything about what was happening in the pack house.
"It's not your fault, you didn't know. And most of the time, omegas go often unseen because that rank is a stigma in itself so anything that happens to us also goes unseen." Trent told me and I pressed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"No one deserves to be treated that way." I said, talking more to myself than to him. Silence settled in the room before Trent spoke up again.
"Do you mind if I go check on Daisy and Willow real quick? I do that multiple times a day to make sure they're okay." He told me like I didn't already know that.
"It's fine really, you can take your time. I'm heading to my room anyway." I said.
"See you later." He said then slipped away.
I went for a second plate of pasta and finished that before I headed back to my room feeling absolutely stuffed.
"I feel like a whale." I mumbled as I walked through the hallway.
Lone maids I would pass would give me slight nods or small smiles and I had to settle with nodding and smiling awkwardly. I needed to get used to their new found likeness for me even though I found it weird.
A few papers on my desk fluttered and I found that odd because there wasn't supposed to be a draft in my room. Before leaving, I had closed the wind-
The thought died in my head when I saw my window very much open. Someone had been in here.
