                    "What?" I blinked in shock.
I knew that would be the next course of action but I wasn't ready to face my father. Not after watching his debacle with Lykania this morning.
"Come on, we have to go." Trent said then pulled lightly on my arms to follow him.
"Can't it wait till later?" I whined them immediately regretted my words. People could be in real danger and I was letting the fear of my Father get to me before anything else.
Trent opened his mouth to speak but I stopped him before he could say anything.
"Ignore that, I didn't mean it. I'm just not a huge fan of facing my father right now." I blurted out.
"I know." Trent replied in a low voice, his eyes were filled with so much understanding and as silly as it sounded, it made me feel better.
Trent pulled me out of my room and led me down the twisting hallways leading to my father's office. I mentally prepared myself to not quake in my boots when I saw him again.
We got to his office and I could just about make out my father's voice, and he sounded like he was talking to someone.
I gave Trent a sidelong glance to see if he had heard anything but his eyes were trained forward and he looked engrossed in his thoughts.
I didn't know when I started to creep towards the door to not be heard and nonverbally implored Trent to do the same.
Just then, my Father's voice came through and it was not his usual characteristic booming voice but a windy, quieter version.
"Did you find anything?"
I paid close attention and another gruff voice that I knew answered.
"No, everything was normal."
Not wanting to get caught, I knocked after deciding that I had heard enough. Trent to his credit had remained quiet. He didn't even look like he was breathing when I had my ear pressed against the door.
The room on the other side fell silent for a minute, then two, and the thought that my father wouldn't respond started growing in my head.
"Come in." He called and I pushed the door open and Trent followed right behind me.
My Father sat behind his desk, his fingers tapping idly on the table. He wasn't alone either.
The gruff voice I had recognized belonged to none other than nicky boy, the once head guard of my house arrest.
"You can leave Nicholas." My father said and nicky boy gave him a slight bow before turning to leave. His face was taut and he didn't even look in the direction of Trent and I.
The door clicked closed before my Father beckoned for both of us to move closer. Trent stayed glued to my side, his face blank of any emotion as he did so.
"Have you been waiting long?" My father asked as he stared at me like he could see into my soul.
"No, Trent and I just got here." I replied.
I had been in this situation many times before and I already knew how to play the game. When my father asked that, he really wanted to gauge how much I had heard and find a solution to deal with me effectively if I did hear something.
If my Father hadn't believed me, he didn't show it. He simply nodded.
"What do you want this time?" His tone sounded bored as he eyed me. His gaze drifted to Trent and lingered and I was suddenly hyper aware of how close Trent and I were.
As subtle as I could, I took a step away from Trent and watched as my father's eyes glimmered.
That couldn't be good.
"Alpha, I need to report a break in." Trent said then stepped forward.
"Explain?"
"Just this morning, someone broke into Lunawyn's room and rummaged through her things but thankfully, nothing was stolen." Trent reported.
"Why weren't you in your room?" My Father asked, his eyes slicing from Trent to mine.
"I was having breakfast. And if I recall father, you said that I could go to anywhere in the pack house and I opted to stay longer. That is part of our agreement and shouldn't be a problem right?" I gritted out, getting under his skin and I felt fulfilled when my father's jaw ticked.
"Right." His voice was ice cold as he trained his hard gaze on me.
"Alpha, I think security should be upped since we don't know if this person will strike again." Trent said, his voice laced with confidence.
"Are you trying to tell me how to do my job?" My father said, his tone dropping an octave lower.
Trent's confident exterior faltered and he stuttered out. "N- no Alpha."
Trent trailed his eyes down so he missed when my father's lips curled into a satisfied smile. And I had no doubt that it was because of the fact that he had intimidated Trent so easily.
It made me sick that I was related to my Father. I hated how he relished and abused his power over others simply because he could.
"I'll have the guards and warriors be extra vigilant these days because we do not want a repeat of what happened today. And in the mean time, try to actually do your job Tray and do it well." My Father said, getting his name wrong but Trent didn't make a move to correct him.
"His name is Trent." I said after taking a leap of courage.
If there was one thing my father hated as much as someone disrespecting him and his rank, it was when you talked back without being spoken to.
His brown eyes snapped to me and I saw annoyance flare in their depths.
"Well thanks for informing me." He said, not sounding thankful at all.
"Now leave, I still have a lot of things to do." He added then glanced down at the heap of papers seemingly to have already lost interest in us.
I didn't wait to get scolded and pivoted on my heels, out of the office. Trent remained quiet until we were out and a good distance away from the office before he spoke.
"Thank you for standing up for me."
