Victor's POV.
The morning started the same way it always did. Woke up to the sound of my alarm, groaned, and rolled over for a few extra seconds before finally forcing myself up. My body was stiff, but that was nothing new. Another day, another routine. I dragged myself into the bathroom, turning the water on and letting it run hot while I brushed my teeth.
The minty taste helped wake me up a little, but the shower was what really did the trick. The second the hot water hit my skin, I sighed, letting the steam work its way through my muscles. I didn’t rush, but I didn’t linger either. There was a meeting today, an important one, and I had to be ready.
Once I was done, I wrapped a towel around my waist and stepped out, steam clinging to the air. I ran a hand through my damp hair as I walked over to my closet, pulling out my best clothes.
Nothing too flashy, just clean, sharp, and commanding respect. A dark button-up, fitted black pants, polished shoes. I strapped on my watch, making sure everything was in place. The kind of look that said I was in charge without having to say it out loud.
By the time I was fully dressed, I could already hear the low hum of voices coming from the sitting room. The other pack leaders had started to arrive, their chatter mixing together as more people filled the space. I took a deep breath, rolling my shoulders before stepping out of my room. Time to get to work.
The main sitting area was filled with familiar faces. Leaders from neighboring packs, their betas at their sides, a few other ranked members mingling as they waited for the meeting to officially start. Luciano was already there, standing near the entrance, watching everything with that calculating gaze of his. He caught my eye and gave a small nod, which I returned before making my way deeper into the room.
“Victor,” Alpha Gregor from the Shadowfang Pack greeted me first. He was a broad, older man with streaks of gray in his black hair, but he carried himself with the kind of authority that came from experience.
“Gregor,” I responded, shaking his hand firmly. “Glad you could make it.”
“Wouldn’t miss it,” he said with a small smirk. “These meetings are necessary. Packs do better when we work together.”
I nodded in agreement, then moved on, exchanging greetings with the others. Alpha Elias of the Crimson River Pack, a younger leader who had taken over just a few years ago, gave me a firm handshake. “Victor. Looking forward to today’s discussions.”
“Likewise,” I replied.
Once everyone was settled, we got to business. The meeting wasn’t anything out of the ordinary—updates on security, trading agreements, border patrol coordination. Each pack had their own strengths, and the goal was always to make sure we were all operating at our best without stepping on each other’s toes.
Luciano took notes, as he always did, keeping track of every detail. A few times, he stepped in to clarify something or add to a discussion, but for the most part, the leaders spoke, and I listened, offering my input when needed. It was straightforward, efficient, and by the time we were wrapping up, most of us were already thinking about the meal waiting in the next room.
As the meeting ended and people started to break off into smaller conversations, I grabbed a drink from the bar and leaned against the counter, watching as the leaders and their betas mingled.
That was when I noticed Beta Dorian from the Blue Ridge Pack stiffen slightly, his head turning just the slightest bit as if something had caught his attention. He sniffed the air once, then again, a frown forming between his brows before his eyes darkened slightly.
His Alpha, Marcus, must have noticed because he turned to him with a raised brow. “Dorian?”
Dorian blinked a few times before shaking his head slightly. “I... I think I just caught my mate’s scent.”
That got the attention of a few people nearby. Finding a mate wasn’t something that happened every day, especially not at a meeting like this.
Luciano, standing beside me, smirked. “Well, that’s one way to make an alliance stronger.”
Dorian seemed distracted, like he was trying to pinpoint exactly where the scent was coming from. Marcus looked over at me, then back at his beta. “We might need to stay the night, if that’s alright.”
I shrugged. “You know you’re welcome to. No reason to leave if there’s something important to figure out.”
Marcus nodded in thanks while Dorian still seemed half-distracted, eyes scanning the room.
I smirked, taking a sip of my drink. Looked like the night was going to be more interesting for at least one person in the room.
I pushed off the counter, setting my drink down as I nodded toward one of the attendants standing nearby. "Show them to their rooms. Give them the best ones."
The man gave a small bow before gesturing for Marcus and Dorian to follow. Dorian still looked distracted, his gaze sweeping the room like he was hoping to catch another trace of that scent. Marcus placed a firm hand on his beta’s shoulder, giving him a look that was both amused and understanding before following the attendant out.
Luciano smirked, watching them leave. “Think he’ll find her?”
I shrugged, swirling the last bit of my drink in the glass. “If it’s meant to be.”
The room had started to thin out as more people wandered toward the dining area, drawn in by the scent of food. I thought about joining them for a second, but the exhaustion was already creeping in. The meeting had been long, and I’d been running on less sleep than I liked.
I let out a slow breath and rolled my shoulders before making my way back to my room. The second I stepped inside, the quiet hit me. No murmuring voices, no sharp gazes studying every movement—just stillness.
I stripped off my shirt first, tossing it onto a chair before unbuttoning my cuffs and rolling my sleeves up. The weight of the day sat heavy on my skin, but I didn’t have the energy for another shower. I’d take one in the morning.
Climbing into bed, I ran a hand through my hair, letting my head sink into the pillow. The sounds of the house were faint, distant, like a reminder that everything was still moving, still breathing.
Sleep pulled at me, slow and steady. One last deep breath, and I let go.
