Trini's pov.
I walked slowly toward her bed, the warmth of the room instantly wrapping around me like a comforting embrace. The scent of dried herbs and fresh linen filled the air, a familiar and soothing aroma that always seemed to linger in Lunawyn’s space.
Sitting down beside her, I exhaled softly, letting my shoulders relax just a little.
Lunawyn watched me with those piercing eyes of hers, a knowing look flashing across her face. She leaned back against the headboard, one arm resting lazily over her stomach.
"I'm hearing rumors, Trini," she said casually, but there was an edge to her tone, something unreadable.
I raised my head, my brows pulling together. "What rumors?" I asked cautiously.
Her lips quirked up slightly. "That you're the mate to a beta who visited this pack."
I stiffened.
The words settled heavily between us, and for a moment, I didn’t know how to respond. My fingers curled into the fabric of my dress as I searched for something to say, but my mind was a mess.
So, the rumors had already started.
I looked away, chewing on the inside of my cheek. "Who told you that?" I muttered.
She shrugged. "People talk."
I swallowed hard. "And what exactly are they saying?"
"That it was an intense moment," she mused, tilting her head slightly. "That you accepted him immediately. That you didn’t hesitate. And… that you haven’t been the same since."
I let out a shaky breath, my heart thudding a little too fast.
It was true.
Everything about me had changed the moment I met Dorian.
The bond took hold of me in a way I wasn’t prepared for, pulling me into something deeper than I had ever felt before. It left me breathless, uncertain, torn.
Lunawyn studied me, waiting.
"You’re quiet," she noted, her voice softer now. "Is it true?"
I hesitated, then nodded slowly. "Yes."
A small smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "And how do you feel about it?"
I exhaled, shaking my head slightly. "I don’t know."
"Not even a little?"
I pressed my lips together, my thoughts in a tangled mess. "I mean… I like him. I do. But it’s complicated."
"Because of Trent," she finished for me.
I tensed.
Her eyes never left mine. "You cared for him, didn’t you?"
I swallowed past the lump in my throat, my fingers gripping the hem of my dress.
"I can’t reject my mate for someone who isn’t even mine," I admitted finally, my voice barely above a whisper.
Lunawyn nodded slowly, as if weighing my words. "That’s true."
A beat of silence stretched between us, thick and heavy.
Then she sighed, shifting on the bed. "But I have to ask, what happened? You seemed sure about Trent before. Did the bond really make you forget about him so easily?"
I flinched at her words.
"No," I whispered. "I didn’t forget him. But it’s different now. It’s like… something inside me changed. The moment I met Dorian, everything I felt for Trent became… distant. Like a memory I can barely hold onto."
Lunawyn hummed thoughtfully, crossing her arms. "I guess the mate bond is stronger than we realize."
"It is," I agreed.
She studied me for a moment, her gaze sharp, calculating. "And do you think you’ll be happy with him?"
I hesitated again, but this time, the answer came easier. "I don’t know," I admitted. "But I want to try."
Lunawyn gave a small, approving nod. "That’s all that matters."
For a while, we just sat there, the weight of the conversation still lingering in the air. It wasn’t easy to talk about—this whole situation felt like a whirlwind, pulling me in directions I wasn’t ready for.
But talking to Lunawyn… it helped.
After a while, she stretched, yawning slightly. "Well, enough of that for now. I’m starving."
I chuckled softly. "You always are."
She grinned. "Go get us some food. I’m too comfortable to move."
I rolled my eyes but nodded, standing up. "Fine, I’ll go."
I walked toward the door, but just as I was about to step out, I paused.
Something inside me told me to say it—to let her know, just in case.
I turned slightly, glancing at her over my shoulder.
"Appreciate every moment you have with me now," I murmured. "Because soon, I’ll be out of here… for a better life."
Lunawyn’s eyes lit up with something unreadable, a flicker of sadness hidden beneath her usual composure.
"I’ll miss you," she admitted, her voice softer than before.
A small smile tugged at my lips.
"But first," she added quickly, waving a hand toward the door, "go bring our food."
I chuckled, shaking my head before finally stepping out.
As I made my way toward the kitchen, my mind still swirled with everything we had talked about.
Trent. Dorian. My future.
Nothing felt certain anymore.
But one thing was clear—change was coming.
And I had to be ready for it.
As I made my way to the kitchen, the familiar aroma of freshly cooked food filled the air, making my stomach grumble softly. The halls were quieter than usual, probably because most of the pack had already eaten.
Pushing open the kitchen doors, I stepped inside and spotted Casey and Mika chatting near the counter. They both turned to look at me as I walked in.
"Trini!" Mika grinned, tilting her head slightly. "What brings you here?"
I smiled. "I came to get food for two."
Mika raised an eyebrow, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "For you and Prince Charming Dorian?" she teased, placing a hand over her chest dramatically.
I rolled my eyes as she let out a laugh.
"No," I chuckled softly, shaking my head. "For me and Lunawyn."
Mika pouted playfully. "That’s boring."
Casey, who had already started dishing the food onto two plates, shot Mika a look. "Leave her alone, Mika," she said, but there was amusement in her tone.
Mika huffed but smiled anyway. "Fine, fine. I’ll behave."
I watched as Casey carefully arranged the portions, making sure each plate was balanced before handing them to me. As she did, her voice dropped to a barely audible whisper.
"I cooked your favorite. Enjoy. It's your day."
I felt my cheeks flush red at the unexpected kindness. My heart warmed at the gesture.
"Thanks, Casey," I said softly, meeting her gaze with a grateful smile.
She simply nodded, her lips twitching up slightly before turning back to her work.
Holding both plates steadily in my hands, I turned toward the door, ready to head back to Lunawyn’s room.
Mika called after me with a smirk, "Make sure to save some energy, Trini. You never know when you might need it!"
I rolled my eyes again but couldn’t help the small laugh that escaped me as I walked out of the kitchen.
As I moved through the halls, I felt lighter than before. Maybe it was the scent of my favorite meal, or maybe it was the realization that, despite all the changes happening in my life, I still had people who cared for me.
Either way, I was grateful.
And for now, that was enough.
