"You don't need to thank me, you're my friend. It's the least I could do."
"It still means a lot though. I don't think anyone has ever done that for me before." He responded and I paused to look at him.
His eyes were wet with unshed tears and they shimmered with something I suspected to be gratitude.
I couldn't imagine what he and his sisters must have gone through because this seemed to be the slightest form of abuse.
"I'll always be there for you." I told him. And I meant every word.
Overwhelmed with emotion, Trent pulled me into his arms and squeezed the life out of me in a bear hug.
"Thank you." He whispered against my hair and I felt his warm breath tickle my ear.
"Your welcome." My voice came out muffled because I was smushed against his chest. His heart pounded rapidly as he held me close and we stayed like that. Until my bones started to strain against my skin.
"Um, Trent, when are you going to let me go? You're literally squishing the life out of me." I mumbled and he dropped me so fast like I had burned him.
"Sorry, I was just..." His words trailed off and he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. His cheeks had the slightest flush and his eyes darted around the hallway as he avoided eye contact.
"I know. And it's okay."
Sometimes you didn't need a lot of words to express how you were feeling.
Trent fell into step beside me and we walked quietly until we got to my room. I had thought the breaking and entering hadn't gotten to me but I couldn't stop my heart from jumping in my chest as the bedroom door creaked open.
There was this fear about what could happen after finding out that the place you called you're safe haven didn't seem so safe anymore. And that fear grew in me as the minutes ticked by.
"Oh, right. This place is still a mess." Trent commented then went to my desk and started shoving things into its drawers.
"All staple items like pens, papers go into the first drawer and every other thing in the second and third." I told him when I noticed he was shoving things wherever they could fit.
"You got it."
I went over to my closet which was the worst of the bunch and began folding the clothes tossed out.
Thirty minutes went by with me nearly pulling my hair out at the obscene amount of clothes that still needed folding.
Trent was done with my desk and made a seat on the floor to help me. But not without complaining, of course.
"Why do you have so much clothes?" He whined and I stopped folding and gave him a pointed look. He carried on anyway.
"And how come so much clothes can fit into that closet anyway? It doesn't look that big." Trent muttered then casted a glance at the half full closet.
"Do you even wear all these?"
"Yep."
"To where exactly? It's not like you can go anywhere." He said then I watched his eyes flash with regret.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have mentioned anything." He whispered.
"It's okay."
In truth, I didn't even feel like I was under house arrest because I wasn't much of a social butterfly to begin with. I never went anywhere.
"No, but seriously. Do you wear these?" He asked then gestured to the random piles of clothing on the floor.
"Have you forgotten I'm a girl? I need options Trent. Options." I told him with my head held high and he rolled his eyes.
"Of course."
I may be guilty of being a shop till you drop kind of girl, but what girl wasn't?
"Stop yapping and help so that this will go faster." I said when Trent wouldn't stop muttering.
Twenty minutes later, there wasn't a clothing pile in sight and my room looked the way it should have been when I first arrived after breakfast.
Trent got up and stretched dramatically like he had been put to a whole lot of work.
"Ugh, finally. This took longer than it should have." He let out.
"Agreed." I said and Trent gave me a look.
"What?"
"Well it wouldn't have taken so long if someone would clean out her closet."
"I can't believe you. You're blaming me!"
"All I'm saying is there's no point holding on to stuff you don't use." He shrugged.
"I've told you a thousand times already, I wear all my clothes." I let out and Trent shrugged.
"Uhuh, keep telling yourself that." He commented.
"You know what, whatever." I let out and Trent chuckled.
"Given up already?"
I threw a playful glare his way then grabbed a pillow and tossed it at his head.
He dodged swiftly then threw the pillow back on the bed. The smile he had faded off his face and he stared hard at a nonexistent entity. He was thinking again.
"What are you thinking about?"
"About what we are going to do from here. Your room has been compromised and I don't feel okay leaving you alone. At least not anymore." He told me.
"I'll be fine Trent. Whoever it is that's responsible won't be coming back. Not when the security around the area has been upped." I tried to reassure Trent.
Apart from being a first class yapper, he could be a first class worrier if the time called for it.
"But what if he does try to come again? Then what?"
"He won't Trent."
"Even if he doesn't, it's not safe for you to stay alone tonight." He insisted and I sighed.
I didn't know what to say to him to make him see my reasoning.
"Trent..." I let out and it was his turn to sigh.
"I'm worried about you Wyn."
"I know."
He stared at me with so much care and worry that I was starting to cave.
"Alright, so what do you want to do about it?"
"I'm going to stay with you tonight." He said and the air in my lungs rushed out.
